@egrip80 To say this week has been the toughest in my career would be an understatement. It has been almost a week since we lost our brother Rico. Our show’s 911 crew members have showed an amazing amount of support for our department. This loss is not just to our department but to the entire show. Some were closer to Rico, and others who just met him in the last few days have mentioned what a nice guy he was. Rico was an amazing grip and an even better story teller. I met Rico about 15 years ago. We wouldn’t bump into each other again until a couple years later. Rico had amazing way of remembering everyone. Shoot forward a few years later and I was in a position to hire him. Although he had 10 years on me in the business he was polite and kind. When he gave a suggestion, he wanted to make sure he didn’t step on any one’s toes. My usual response to him was, C’MON RICO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!! One of my last moments with him was rigging a condor for some night work. I found myself stopping to listen to one of his stories about his time living in New York. He kept working without skipping a beat while I stood there trying to imagine him as a young guy in the bars of New York. Although a few years older than me you would never know it! He never complained. When he mentioned retirement, he advised me on the in’s and out’s and was a vast base of knowledge of information. Thanks to all of our union brothers and sisters who’ve reached out to us by either stopping by our set, calling or texting to let us know they are there for us. On May 11 2024 Rico tragically lost his life driving home from a 14 hour work day. This was his second consecutive 14 hour day for the production company filming the tv show 911. After working from Friday at 2pm until 4:10am Saturday morning, less than 20 minutes from his departure from crew parking, his car was found rolled over on north bound 57 in San Dimas. Rico was pronounced dead on the scene. Rico was an absolute legend in the film & motion picture industry. Many have told me he was hands down the best in the business at his job. He always made sure to take care of all of his crew members, as well as connect with everyone that was working around him on set. He could tell you stories for days, and his connection ran so deep with all of the peoples heart he has touched! It truly was an honor to work with him side by side, and I know everyone else who has worked with him feels the same. A heart of gold and a work ethic as strong as a rock, Rico served 30 years in the business with over 75,000 hours under his belt. Filing his paperwork only a few weeks prior, Rico was ready to enjoy his retirement, and planning to still work in the business to keep in contact with all of his friends and loved ones in the industry. We are raising money for his funeral services so that we can honor his legacy and celebrate his life, as well as help provide support for his wife in these difficult times. In what ways do you engage with the outdoors while at work? Taking a well earned break in the sunshine? Working outside on location? Seeing a sunset through a loading dock? . Our work days can be full of long and hard work and sometimes we leave home and return home in the dark. In the soundstage, shops, and theaters of our work life it can be easy to feel disconnected from the outdoors. When working on indoor jobs it's a great idea to try to get outside on a break or lunch whenever possible. . Pictured here is a break spot found during an install at SeaWorld San Diego. This was a fantastic lunch spot and a great place to connect to the world beyond work. But sometimes all that is available is a small view of the hills peakibg through soundstages, a quick walk past the LA River, and sometimes you only have a parking lot. Whatever is outside your work it is helpful to take a moment to connect to the life going on out there. . On the other hand we can be all to familiar with the elements and outdoors while working. The heat of un-aircondirioned warehouses painting scenery, working outdoors in the snow on a film location, or riding out a windy day while in a boom lift while installing a new theme park attraction, or working summer stock theater outdoors. Even if you don't consider yourself outdoorsy there is a certain skill set that comes with our particular experiences working outdoors while painting. . Do you take break outside? How do you relate to working outdoors? Does it give you any insight into how you connect to the world around you? Did you know you can recycle plastic filns like pallet wrap/ stretch wrap? Most cities *DO NOT* collect it in their bins because it clogs up their sorting machines and gets too dirty to recycle in the process but there are other ways to get this material to a recycler. Companies like Nex Trek @trexcompany take this film and turn it into patio furniture, decks, and other building materials. Special drop off sites can be found at some grocery stores and other storefronts (more info coming). What if the plastic film that is used on every location cart and set piece that travels was collected at a special bin at the studio lots? This film as it is used in set construction is generally very clean as it is used only to briefly transport items. All we need is the infrastructure for collecting the material at the big to studio lots. . Creating new ways of recycling will be an interlocal and even an inter union effort. On union jobs in LA packing and unpacking the carts and trucks going to location falls under the Laborers jurisdiction at @liuna_local724 How could we work together to make sure resources that can be reused aren't lost to the dump? . Finally a note for your own personal plastic film disposal needs.... Unfortunately many of the storefront drop off programs have been paused. If you find info online it is always good to call ahead to make sure that the store is still offering a drop off.. A website I posted in my stories said that there were supposed to be 56 stores with a collection program but in reality there were only 18 in the state of California. . It's hard to stand up when a strong tide is pushing you in one direction. So come take a seat and rest awhile. On a positive note, most studios do have Sustainability Departments these days but.... unfortunately they are mostly focused on the production side of things. While it's great to see that change is starting to take place, it can feel like a bit of an oversight to not consider what we can do before company shows up to set. . But starting in the summer of 2023, movement against the status quo is forming from rank and file in Hollywood who know we can do more. That just on the other side of the soundstage walls- in our Art Departments, construction mills, and paint departments- we can do better. That if we just took the time to stop and talk about what can do differently then through education, research, and working together we can create more sustainable practices in filmmaking. . So.... What can you do today to make reusing materials easier for yourself and your crew? . A reuse box is a no brainer in other industries like theater or small scene shops with limited budgets but unfortunately in most film and television the budgets can encourage one time use for many tools that actually have a longer life! . Making a clear and designated space for lightly used tools like rags and chip brushes so they can be used a second or even third time is probably the simplest action you can take today to make it clear that reuse is encouraged in your shop! . We aren't going to save every brush or rag (and that's ok) but the simple act of creating spaces like this can start a work culture that says you don't *have* to throw everything away after only using it once! . Buckminster Fuller Ever heard that recycling doesn’t matter and that “everything” just ends up in the same place? It is true that a lot of our “recycling” ends up at the landfill but, as we learned at the Art Director’s Guild event “Curb Your Recycling” on April 22nd, it isn’t because all recycling is trash but rather many complicated factors like supply and demand, the shortcomings of sorting equipment at facilities, and contaminated or mixed materials that can’t be recycled. Forty Six attendees who heard from Amy Hammes, a recycling specialist who works at Burbank Recycling and has roots in dealing with production waste (by working at EcoSets and married to a Propmaker in Local 44) came away with a deeper understanding of the state our recycling programs are in today. Amy’s message was full of hard truths but drove home that there is no such place as “away” and we need better solutions to be able to recycle more of our wasted resources. And that phrase “wasted resources” was the heart of Amy’s presentation- even if you don’t think recycling will “save the planet” it is more efficient to use materials and resources over just throwing them away to rot. Yes there are problems with our current recycling systems but new solutions are being made everyday, many of which Amy shared in her presentation. After the event there was a panel discussion between the Sustainability Committees of Locals 729, 44, 705, 80, 800, and 892.
