While there, Marcus was on a panel to discuss Digital Equity at Work in Skills Policy, and he and Wendy later met with Senator Gary Peters (@garypeters) and fellow leaders in the effort to upskill Michiganders. Inspired by all they've learned from other national leaders in literacy, Wendy and Marcus have now returned home ready to get to work!

We were deeply saddened to learn this week of the death of Rick Adamy, a longtime board member and supporter of the Literacy Center. Rick was past board president and treasurer, a dedicated financial supporter of the Literacy Center, committed volunteer, and our dear friend. He provided thoughtful leadership during a time of transition for the organization, and ensured that the Literacy Center was able to continue to grow and thrive. We are grateful to know that his legacy will ripple through our community for generations to come.โ โ Rick and his wife Loy were honored as Champions of Literacy at our 2017 Spellebration. She's now one of three women being honored for their Brilliant Tenacity at West Michigan Woman's (@westmichiganwoman) upcoming award ceremony. Yeli's persistence in the face of language barriers, alopecia universalis, and other obstacles is an inspiration to all of us. Meet Elizabeth! Elizabeth was a learner in our Citizenship + ESL class in the spring of 2023. She says, "Completing my citizenship interview classes at the Literacy Center gave me the confidence, knowledge, and training to improve my language limitations." With newfound confidence, Elizabeth soon joined the Literacy Center team as a childcare provider, quickly becoming a mentor and leader among her peers. "Working for Literacy Center has allowed me to offer my attention and care to the children of English learners in different schools while their parents take their learning time. Having the satisfaction of a child feeling protected by my side is my purpose as a childcare worker."โ โ Earlier this year, Elizabeth took her citizenship oath and became a naturalized citizen of the United States! We couldn't be more proud of her and all of her accomplishments. New Americans bring so many gifts to the United States, and we are a better country because they are here. Literacy coach Ella Satterthwaite is our Volunteer of the Year! Since joining the Literacy Center in 2022, her dedication and positive energy have made a quick impact. Ella works alongside Vivian, a native speaker of English, to grow her reading and writing skills. Vivian especially enjoys cooking and recipe-related lessons and is now inspired to write short stories on her own.
