In collaboration with Ethnic studies 98, intro to Arab and Muslim American studies, we’re having a guest lecture about the Black Muslim experience! 🗣️ Join us on Thursday, April 18th, 2-3:20 PM in CHASS INTN 1020 as we welcome Dr. Nayawiyyah Muhammad to UCR. Dr. Nayawiyyah Muhammad received a B.A. and M.A. in Religious Studies from California State University, Long Beach, and her Ph.D. in Women’s Studies in Religion from Claremont Graduate University. With specialties in Islam and the Body, Feminism and Islam, and Eco-feminist Theology, she conducts research at the intersection of religion, women’s studies, and environmentalism. Currently, Dr. Muhammad is a professor in the Department of Religious Studies at California State University, Long Beach, and is often called upon to present her story and research at various universities and college classes across the United States. In addition, Dr. Muhammad is part of an ongoing team of scholars involved in a digital humanities project. This project aims to create a virtual archive of hadith transmissions from the wives of Prophet Muhammad (S). The goal is to provide commentary, historical timelines, and insight into Islamic rituals and kinship networks, thus providing significant value to anyone researching women in Islam and the “Mothers of the Believers” in particular. #ucriverside #lifeatucr #mescucr

The newest advancements in hockey are attributed to one BCOE Chemical and Environmental Engineering alumnus Garrett Milliron and his studies on mantis shrimp 🏒🦐 Milliron, in collaboration with former BCOE professor David Kisailus, developed a new composite material technology that was used in the production of high-performance sports equipment. Through his studies on the mantis shrimp, he discovered the helicoid, a spiral structure that showcases incredible durability. Alumna Jaimie Stewart (PhD, Bionengineering, ’18) is teaching the next generation of engineers! As a #UCRBCOE doctoral student, she focused on the design and synthesis of RNA nanostructures, and she’s brought her knowledge and engineering excellence to @ucla_engineering as an assistant professor of bioengineering. Stewart has received numerous awards and honors, including a 2019 Ford Postdoctoral fellowship and recognition as a fellow by the Intersections Science Fellows Symposium in 2021. Meet Nicholas Robertson, a bioengineering PhD candidate, and one of two BCOE graduates to be the recipient of the Koerner Family Foundation and a $12,000 grant. He says the grant will “...allow me to focus on my studies without worries of funding.” 🧪On his research interests...”My thesis revolves around utilizing protein-based biosensors to create “smart yeast”. Incorporating the biosensor “smart yeast” and genome-wide screens together allows for the identification of non-obvious genes that allow the yeast to produce more valuable biochemicals like terpenes.” 🔬On his alcohol-detection business...”I discovered that kombucha brews with a small amount of alcohol, often above the legal limit of 0.5%. This led me to invent a machine that detects low alcohol in beverages. For the past 6 years, I have been building and selling these alcohol content detectors. Now, I have sold over 200 machines to brewers around the world accounting for about 10% of all kombucha brewers. Meet Samantha Robinson, a 4th year bioengineering PhD student, and one of two BCOE graduates who received a Koerner Family Foundation and a $12,000 grant. Her research focus is in microfluidics, and she describes her PhD as "...challenging yet motivating and encouraging." 🧪On her research interests..."I love how open-ended microfluidic design is, because sometimes it forces you think outside of the box. Nothing is off the table if it works." 🔬On the fellowship's impact on her studies..."Receiving this fellowship has encouraged me to explore more ways of becoming a well-rounded engineer, and how I can use my skills to advance medicine and patient care in America after finishing my PhD. With this fellowship, I can attend conferences and travel around the US to meet other researchers working in my field." The next generation of engineers, such as our National Society of Black Engineers UCR chapter (@nsbe_ucr be_ucr), received a major boost in financial support from generous donors during the recent #UCRBCOE Match Challenge. The fundraiser drums up donations for student professional organizations, with dollar donated to the Dean’s Innovation Fund toward a student professional organization “matched” up to $1,000 per donor. Students from the UCR Formula SAE Electric Racing (@highlanderracing) and Society of Women Engineers (@swe.ucr) were among the 12 student organizations who received funds! Big, big congrats to computer science PhD student Erfan Shayegani who, along with Department of Computer Science and Engineering’s Yue Dong and Nael Abu-Ghazaleh, shared the Best Paper Award at the recent Southern California Natural Language Processing Symposium at @ucla. Their paper demonstrated a “jailbreak” hack by manipulating the operations of Large Language Model software programs, which are essentially the foundation of query-and-answer AI programs. ✨ We are excited to announce our second SWANA CON 2024 Keynote! ✨ Dr. Ussama Makdisi is Professor of History and Chancellor’s Chair at the University of California Berkeley. He was previously Professor of History and the first holder of the Arab-American Educational Foundation Chair of Arab Studies at Rice University in Houston. During AY 2019-2020, Professor Makdisi was a Visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley in the Department of History. In 2012-2013, Makdisi was an invited Resident Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advanced Study, Berlin). In April 2009, the Carnegie Corporation named Makdisi a 2009 Carnegie Scholar as part of its effort to promote original scholarship regarding Muslim societies and communities, both in the United States and abroad. Makdisi was awarded the Berlin Prize and spent the Spring 2018 semester as a Fellow at the American Academy of Berlin. Professor Makdisi’s most recent book Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World was published in 2019 by the University of California Press. #swanacon24 #mescucr #ucriverside #lifeatucr
