For many of us Latinas, confidence seems like an uphill battle. The truth is, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵. It's a skill we develop and nurture over time. And for some of us, society, schooling, and the environments we grew up in didn't exactly encourage that self-trust. It was full of poder y sabor y laughter and tears - I mean we were straight up crying in this joint but in the kind of way that feels good after…. There was even more laughing and crying and cheering each other on… In college, the thing that saved me was a little group called La Fuerza Latina - we’d potluck and chismear, but walking in felt like home, except they also understood how crazy the experience of college and being away from home was… This night - really ANY NIGHT - that Latinas can get together brought me back to that time - that special understanding that we have for one another. 💜 It will stay with me for a long, long time. Latinas move through the world with so much bottled up inside of them, and too often they think they can’t share what's on their heart because they think they are the only one. But we are never alone 🦋 A while back, I received some feedback after a group coaching call: “I am so surprised by how much I am connecting with what others have been sharing. Others have said aloud what I have thought and felt, but never said aloud myself. I feel connected, seen, and understood.” That is why I started this community - because we all deserve spaces to feel seen and heard ❤️ We deserve to be able to speak dreams aloud and have people affirm them and help us to grow. We deserve to be able to see all that is possible for us when we fully embody all that is within us about who we want to be. We have to look back to consciously move forward. The end of the year can be a hurried and stressful time to attend all the things and buy all the things. But it can also be an intentional time to reflect on what we have experienced for the past year. Unpacking the year is a practice that should be used regularly so that life isn’t flying by with us just riding along. We all have a purpose to offer the world. The unique mixture of passions, strengths, and values that make up who we are paves the way for us to bring that purpose to life. But sometimes life experiences, societal pressure, and systemic oppression can block what should flow from us with ease. The next thing we know, 5 months or 5 years have gone by with us not living the life we were meant to live. I believe that’s why the shifting of seasons can be so appealing. We notice the opportunity to shed what no longer serves and start fresh with new possibilities. Let’s kick off 2024 leaving nothing on the table. Let’s spend the next few days acknowledging and processing what we experienced in the past year. Now is the time to lay the foundation for what is possible in 2024. We can focus on our joy and our purpose, so that we - and future generations - can thrive 🦋 One of my clients was dealing with excessive burnout. She was ready to quit her job and stop working altogether because she was so unhappy and felt done with it all. She was burning herself out because she wanted so badly to be able to pay for her kids’ college tuition, but the result was that she was miserable. Can we really help our kids, and the folks around us we are leading, by modeling burnout? What if instead, we modeled putting ourselves first? To take space to process, get clear on who we are, what we want, and leave where we’re at because it’s not a fit? Being a Thriving Chingona means we can rest and give ourselves space to figure out our purpose in life and build the life that we want. The mural that changed everything 🦋 When I was getting my coaching certification in Oakland five ago, we had guest coaches come in to teach us different coaching skills and techniques. One day, we were doing an intuitive coaching exercise that incorporated movement, seeing wherever we felt led. I felt called to the window, and the thing that caught my eye was this mural in the building opposite us. I started reflecting on that mural, realizing how much it spoke to me. To me, it represented women of color in their glory, sparkling and empowered. At the same time, I looked down at the street, where there was tons of movement: bikes going in all directions, people walking around. I stayed locked in on the crowd, focusing my attention away from the mural. By the end of the coaching session, we realized I was being distracted by all this busyness that was just not necessary. But if I just kept my eyes up, kept focused on that mural, and kept my focus on the women I wanted to serve, everything else in my life was going to fall into place. After my certification, I stayed in Oakland for a few years, and every time I walked down Broadway, I would see that mural and remember that coaching session. To keep my focus on women of color, and everything else would fall into place. And lo and behold, I was recently back in Oakland, giving a talk for Latina leaders, right by that mural. That's the power of coaching: helping us to see visions in the future, to keep us away from all the distractions, and focused on what is meant for us. The world is largely not designed for us Latinas. I started school only speaking Spanish. Throughout my childhood, I often worked tirelessly to assimilate or fit into spaces that were not designed for me. The reality: the school system breaks down Latine children and imposes the belief that we do not deserve to dream and our only purpose is to follow directions and serve. But what we were taught as children, we can break free from as adults. We deserve to dream big and pursue our dreams wholeheartedly 🦋 Our parents and grandparents showed us day in and day out what it looks like to hustle and persevere. Finding your purpose is a draft that starts you off. In my group program, Chingona's Sabbatical, I share with the folks inside the different iterations of my purpose statement as it evolved over time. With every iteration, I tried it on and found more ways it could be more specific to make my life more purpose-driven, before moving on to the next version 🦋 My purpose has existed all along, but it has refined itself with my intentionality over time to now be: I provide spaces for Latinas to find their purpose and build a purpose-driven life. It's not a quick, 6-week process. Slow down and let the journey take time. Embody it so that it will be with you for life ❤️ My question for you is, where are you trying to speed up the process, to the point it may be creating more of a blockage? When you suppress the emotions that come with change, or there is fear about truly knowing yourself - that's a place to slow down and get curious and engage, so that you are able to move forward. If you just suppress it and think you're gonna keep moving on towards action, you're gonna get stuck along the way, or get distracted and move in a direction that is not meant for you. So think about where you can slow down and be more intentional. Allow yourself to feel the feelings and ask yourself the deep questions. One way to help you do this is by working with a 1:1 coach.
