Getting to know my Veedel (neighborhood) with a little tour by @echtkoeln - “Durch die Südstadt” 1. St Severinskirche, my neighborhood church. Built in Romanesque style but renovated into gothic. 2. A statue of a “chocolate girl” commemorating the thousands of girls and young women who worked at the Stollwerck chocolate factory, which used to be located right behind the church. Stollwerck girls were instantly recognizabecon the streets due to their clean hands and tidy appearance. The Südstadt has always been a working class neighbourhood. Fortunately all of the workers now are over the age of 18 - some of the Stollwerck girls were as young as 12. 3. St Severin, the namesake of the neighbourhood. Kölner prayed to him when they needed rain. One year during a particularly bad drought, a group of Kölner settlers out to bring back the saint’s remains from their resting place in Bordeaux. The French were not pleased with this proposal but eventually settled on a compromise in which half of the body was transported back to Cologne. It rained on the way back. Did you know? The Pop-Up Lab - Mobile Citizen Participation for the City of Cologne In summer semester 2022, a flexible space format was created within the research cooperation of the Köln International School of Design and the Innovation Office of the City of Cologne @stadtkoeln. The format shall enable the citizens of Cologne to actively participate in the design of their city. The mobile Pop-Up Lab is an excellent example of how Service Design can be used to promote citizen participation in the city of Cologne. The result of the project is a modular system that covers a wide range of participation in different locations in the city. The INTIA Kit - Discover, understand and create smart home technology The interdisciplinary project INTIA (Inclusive Technology Ideas for Everyday Life) enables individual technical solutions for socially disadvantaged young people. The goal was to focus on their needs and let them develop solutions themselves. By using the INTIA case, they were able to realize their ideas and build prototypes. The Service Design department of KISD @servicedesign designed the suitcase and promoted its intuitive use. In addition, explanatory videos were created. Collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Social Work was important for technical implementation and testing. Last semester, KISD students came up with ways to make sustainable services more accessible to the citizens of Cologne. The concept of 'Geben + Nehmen' is to provide a space where neighbours can give away items they no longer need or want so that others can use them and they do not get thrown away. To test the concept, the shelf has been in place at Eierplätzchen since mid-July and has been warmly welcomed by the neighbourhood and used regularly since. Our graduation ceremony, the KISDgala 2023, took place on Friday, July 7th. It was a successful evening and a colourful and flowery farewell to our graduates. Everything was just right: the good atmosphere, the presenters on stage, the musically and lyrically confident performance of the 2nd semester, and the probably most original and culinary convincing meal so far, which was served so professionally that no one had to wait! The service on the evening did not leave anything to be desired, as well as the happy faces of our graduates and their proud parents.
