My latest acquisition! An old dirty rhythm machine - the Korg KR-55. Note the nail that is used to fix the bass drum potentiometer! :D It's hard to sync to other equipment since it only offers sync out via S-trig (!), and no sync in. So the plan is to clean this old guy up and resolder the bass drum potentiometer. After that I'll look into modding it with a sync input, which luckily seems to be quite an easy task from what I've read so far! :) The KR-55 is one of my favourite drum computers (sorry, rhythm machines) of all time because it just sounds so damn good! I had the programmable sequel from Korg years ago, the KPR-77, but I like the sounds on this a bit better personally. I'll see if I'll keep this or if I'll try to sample many of the rhythm sequences while separating the sounds. Take a listen to some tracks by the french minimal wave group Deux to hear it! Uka Sake, sake Renaissance, made from Californian KR55 Kokuho Rose, brewed at Ninki Shuzo, Fukushima, Japan. Uka is the Japanese word for emergence, and it was chosen as the brand’s name for the symbolism it embodies on several levels. From humble beginnings as organic grain in a field, the rice is transformed through milling and brewing to emerge as a sake which is elegant and refined. The sake label itself is symbolized by the sumie style butterfly. The lower wings of Uka’s butterfly are stylized maps of California and Fukushima, signaling a new relationship established between the family of a California rice farm and a centuries-old brewer’s family in Japan. Early Volca Beats? The Korg KR machines are - in our experience - some of the most useful and useable of the vintage preset drum machines. The sounds are not necessarily as iconic as something like a CR-78 or Mini Pops 7, but they are every bit as good and sit so well in the mix or with effects added. And while you can't combine rhythms the individual volume controls, swing and fills still allow much creativity. And the trigger out is great as well. These two are both serviced and available now. At the top is the "extra latin, extra jazz, extra swing and cheese & bacon on top" KR-55B. On the bottom is the OG KR-55, but although this one has a few scuffs and scars, it has also picked up individual outputs along the way so it's ready to get busy triggering up to seven other noise boxes (if you use the trigger out on the rear as well). This lovely Korg KR-55 got finished up in a night. Apart from the usual lilac cap leakage, this instrument had been damaged by liquid ingress causing corrosion to the lower board - around the power supply area. The 15V zener had failed open and, due to a design … oversight … caused one of the smoothing caps, a 470uF 25V axial, to experience around 29V. I replaced with a 35V Nichicon. It really is a lovely sounding machine, and a refreshing change from *that* Roland sound! A personality of its own. I think I hear it in Dépêche Mode’s “Speak and Spell”, and the track “In Mind”, by Amorphous Androgynous. PSA: if you have a 70s or early 80s instrument - synth, drum machine or whatever - be kind and bring it to a tech for service. This instrument - a #Korg #KR55 - was close to being destroyed by leaking capacitors. If you look closely at these, you can see that almost all of them are leaking and corroded. This can cause real damage if it’s left unchecked.

Do you recognize these guys? It is a picture from the early 80's Dutch instrumental synth band Nova. They had a hit in 1981 with their debut single Aurora. One of the band members was Rob Papen (@robertpapen to the right on the picture). Rob is known today for his Rob Papen software synthesizers. Nova is now operating under the name Peru and is still making music. We are preparing an instrumental cover of a lesser known track from Nova and had some inside tips from Rob. So stick around!
Tascam Double Delay Distraction. This week has been one of snatched moments with the gear, grabbing things from the Library of Dirt and seeing what you can get out of them in a few minutes, without a lot of fiddling about. But that's what you want: a real world test - plug it in, turn it up, see what happens... if it's shit do some more emails and then try something else. . Gid's last experiment of the week was digging into why we dig these little Tascam mixers. Two Maxon AD-150 delays are set up for ping pong delays (the mixer has two channels with inserts, plus an effect send so you can do a lot for something so small). But, obviously, it's all about the distortion, which goes up in steps from "character", to "serious crunch", and finally (sending the overloaded signal through a delay and back into another mic input) we achieve "Total Carnage" - like someone throwing a bitcrusher into a cement mixer 😜. 707 is running our vintage Korg voice set. Happy days. . We have one of these mixers available, and both Analog Delays, if you want them. More 707s coming... . #techno

In a departure from beautiful synths in perfect working order, this afternoon we dive into murkier waters: gear unloved, half-broken or batshit crazy. . Welcome to the Soundgas Auction and test area: five minutes of noise, dirt and shameless gear abuse. . Tony was meant to be testing the freshly-modded KR-55 that’s heading out for a new album recording session in the US, but got a little sidetracked by the stack of strange that Gid had left on the bench featuring the Boss KM-40 and Guyatone AE-5 in this weekend’s auction. . In the first minute notice the hand on the left of the screen switching the KM-40’s input level to add overdrive. . At 1.20 the right hand messes with the cranky Vestax Delay (Not For Sale). High pitched whistling signifies that it’s in dire need of attention - it inhabits the right channel while the left is the KR-55 and AE-5. . Attentive viewers will note that the controls on the AE-5 are extremely dirty, causing instability when moved/touched. This could be viewed as a Very Bad Thing, but we have one in our studio similarly afflicted that we’ve kept instead of a ‘perfect’ example because it’s mental and we love it. Lightly tap the control knobs and marvel at effects that you’d struggle to replicate elsewhere. So it’s for sale as-is in this weekend’s auction. You could of course take a can of switch cleaner to it and it may come up good as new, but we love it just as it is. . The 2.38 right hand knob twiddling on the Hawk HR-45 that we love for its overdrive, as well as being a great stereo spring - something of o Soundgas secret weapon this one: it’s for sale fully overhauled on our site. . At 2.49 the left hand reaches surreptitiously for the two kick drum mod knobs on the KR-55 which can take things from rumpshaking subs to acid drenched whale howls. More of this later… . Thereafter the Vestax is deployed with wild abandon and nary a consideration for fidelity or propriety. It’s noisy AF and may not get any better once it’s been serviced, but that one is definitely a keeper, sorry. .
