On mum’s birthday we got together the ingredients for her to make her own chocolate orange infused gin. It was ready today and is incredible!! • 1l of Gin we used London Dry • 150g Cacao Nibs • Orange Zest Add all to a jar and give a shake, keep in a dark cool place and give a shake once a day or nearly every day. In a week give it a taste, if it needs a bit longer that’s ok. After the plum infused gin we made in memory of our nan and my previous times making limoncello we were excited to try chocolate orange and over the moon with how successful it has been. #infusedgin #chocolateorangegin

Let’s kick this week off with a Pinot Noir Gin, from the UK! So much is said about Mallard Point’s sustainability strategy and the return bottleneck scheme. I even brought them onto @sundaybrunch to showcase that to viewers last year. Rightly so, what they are doing is really impressive and innovative. But perhaps not enough credit is given for them being one of only a couple producers here in the U.K. producing this style of gin. @mallard_point take their London Dry Gin and steep it with pressed Pinot Noir grapes. You get definitive notes of cherry and raspberry from the grapes before the gin takes over. Namely, the spiced botanicals flourish on the finish. Coming off the back of tasting around 20 grape infused gins (I’m highlighting only a few on the feed), this is notably spirit forward on the palate, less voluminous overall, and where the needle is more pointed towards the gin than the grape. That makes it better suited to cocktails like Gin Sours, Brambles and so on. Anyway – in the context of my ongoing exploration of the genre – Mallard Point are a prime example that the grape infused style is global (always has been but that gets forgotten) and is something that winemakers are experimenting with all over the place! #PinotNoir #Gin #InfusedGin #Grapes #Vineyard
I’m exploring the intersection of where and how the world of wine meets the world of gin at the moment. The techniques being used, some of the language, the concepts - there’s a lot being adopted, and often to stunning effect! I’ve featured a few already but in the research, one of the big elements that seems to be undervalued and underrated is how the grape infused gin are bringing in the idea of true vintages into Gin. Actual limited editions by default of harvest, not an arbitrary number that gets shifted if sales go well… Actual changes in flavour year on year, defined by one ingredient shifting profile and its terroir, not through the distilling being either inconsistent or intentionally different. How the category builds value in the years to come and continues to premiumise will be a big challenge. That said, seasonal yearly vintage is an interesting opportunity for producers to explore in that area… Anyway, more bottles, drinks and exploration of this area of gin, grape, and wine world influence coming up over the next few days but let me know if there is an area you want to learn / better understand as I go along! #Grapes #gin #Wine #InfusedGin

Grape infused gins are more than just Shiraz infusions! I’ve seen so many varietals, and not just that – there’s often specific growing / pressing techniques that vary between them. You can find Sangiovese, Grenache, Cab Sauv and Mouverde expressions, and more and more like this one I picked up in the airport – Pinot Noir infusions. This one is from @fortyspottedgin, a well-known Tassie gin using local grapes. It’s super fragrant with raspberry, cherries and coffee bean notes. The flavour overall is just as richly as that vivid colour you get from the pinot. I like the fact that it’s almost bitter as finish (almost) – certainly none of that sugary nonsense you get with some fruit gins. The thing that I always look for is how the grape integrates with the gin, and how it merges juniper with the specifics of that variety. In this case, pinot really is the lead but pine and citrus peel back it nicely, while the tannins add to the mix. The most disturbing thing about it is having to close the cap and place it on its head, which feels disconcerting in every way! I like the reason for that (a nod to the brand’s ‘bottom of the world’ Tasmanian origins) but I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to do it without checking it’s not leaking a few times… #CraftGin #tazmania #PinotNoir #InfusedGin #craftDistilling
