Various Artists - Josie Markus....1924 (60s/70s, Too Many Genres To List) Yowza! Help yourself to a sampling of the finest oddball/outsider Indianapolis music of the late 1960s with this tribute to Austrian immigrant and "very pretty lady" Josie Markus. The LP kicks off with a spoken-word tribute to Josie Markus, to whom this entire LP is dedicated. It's unclear exactly what Josie did to warrant such a motley crew of players putting these songs to tape, but I am very glad they did! The LP was put together by local musician Len Smith and it runs the musical gamut from fuzz guitar instrumentals (first clip) to wonky folk (second clip) to echo-y rockabilly (third clip) and lots of other stuff in between (fourth clip). All songs are performed with maximum passion and minimum formal musicianship. Unfortunately I can't find any information online about Josie Markus or any of the other artists featured on the compilation. United Kombos seems to have been Len Smith's own label, with at least one other release attributed to the label. 1966's "T.T. Termiter b/w Why Don't They Leave Us Alone" was put out by Satan's Sinners and features Len Smith on B Side vocals. EP LAUNCHED! Oxygen, a collection of 5 original songs, is now streaming on all platforms. This is my third DIY compilation project as The Bristlecones, but it is all the more special because of the deep contributions of collaborators - my dear friends listed below. I wrote and recorded most of my acoustic parts and vocals initially but then intentionally gave them very little direction when tracking their parts- instead mostly my ask was "just play/sing what you feel, make the song yours too". Wanted their creativity to expand these songs- to put their fingerprints on them. And that's exactly what we've got here!
