Image and text by @gretchenkaystuart // Have you ever experimented with in-camera double exposure and/or ICM (Intentional Camera Movement)? As a conservation photographer, these are not techniques I normally employ, but photographers who sell fine art prints sometimes master these creative methods because the results can be more desirable to the masses as wall art. By-the-wind-sailors (Velella velella) are beautiful little hydrozoa that live far offshore. During heavy winds and storms, they wash up along the Pacific Coast by the thousands. Oregon’s beaches have been coated with them lately, so I decided to honor their short lives with some art! This photo is an in-camera overlay of two images (see the next slide for individual shots). First, I made a standard portrait of the Velella. Next, I made a landscape photo of the beach using an ICM technique where you zoom in or out during the exposure with a slow shutter speed. The opacity of each image is adjustable before the camera combines them as a single raw file. It’s fun to imagine the two scenes you want to combine, leaving space in the frame for each. This is a great exercise in pre-visualization. What are your thoughts? Is this style of photography beautiful? Is it awful? Archives (2015-2020): Ancestry. A bison day dreaming of its ancestral home far away. Woodland bison are distinctly different from their plains cousins. They have a larger hump, smaller more triangular head and mane, and narrower shoulders. This image would be more appropriate to include a plains bison, althought none are handy. Work in progress.. this piece totally came about by accident.. I rarely throw away mishaps because you never know.. With that being said, the background layer was a failed image transfer.. the little girl on the right was done on a tea bag that I wasn’t satisfied with .. and the top image was printed on acetate.. The 3 layers combined made it complete. .. it measures 3 1/4 x 4, so it will eventually become a cover for an art book🤎🧡🤎 all these wonderful images from Tracy @arthousewhimsy #artistsoninstagram #artprocess #creativejournal #createeveryday #handmadejournal #journal #acetateart #digitalimage #junkjournal #mixedmedia #mixedmediaart #teabagart #imageoverlay #artistjournal #bookarts #makearteveryday #enjoytheprocess #papercrafts #creativeart

To the moon, Alice. I’m not a camera ambassador or a camera fan boy. Cameras are merely tools for executing one’s vision and I’ve used about every brand out there in more than 40 years of picture making professionally. Whatever works best for me is what I use. However, I do enjoy the ability that today’s digital cameras give one to combine images in camera (in this case, a Nikon Z9) via image overlay. Sure, you can still do multiple exposures that require you to shoot multiple images back-to-back at essentially the same time, but image overlay certainly allows more freedom to try things. You can photograph a jet airliner at 5pm and then come back and photograph the moon at 4am and combine them in-camera. Sure, you could do this in Photoshop, but it’s a challenge to put it together in your head and then do it in-camera. I go through stretches where I play and see what I can create and have fun doing so. All shot from my backyard. I was wearing flannel PJs to make the moon image this morning. YMMV. #lfk #nighttime #nikonz9 #imageoverlay #incameramashup #multipleexposure #light #shadow #minimalist #minimalism #nikon400mmf45s #nikontc2x #monochrome #monochromatic #tothemoon2024

“Winter’s Scene”... #Nikon #Z9, ISO800, 1/2000 at f11, #NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 S lens (Trees) and #NIKKOR 1200mm f11 lens with FTZII Adaptor (Mountains)...In-Camera double-exposure OVERLAY, WB 4500K... @SanDisk CFexpress Type-B-card. The recent subzero temperatures and gorgeous snow fall made for some lovely images this past weekend. Living next to a lake in Colorado makes it well worth the effort to get outside and make pictures...even when it’s -15 below zero. And thus it was for the first image of this in-camera double-exposure OVERLAY...the Trees across the lake at 9:00AM. My second exposure required a different location and a much different view of the Rocky Mountains. This image was made from a higher elevated ranch property 8 miles east from my home using my very old #NIKKOR 1200mm f11 lens with FTZII Adaptor. The higher line-of-sight vantage point “raised the Rockies” higher above the fog bank lingering over the lake and adjacent foothills. It was about 10:15AM and a balmy (sarcasm) -13 degrees...but, again, well worth the short journey and subzero temps. *For the Trees I “Masked” off the TOP of the FRAME using a piece of Black foam-core held in front of the Z 100-400mm lens...easy enough. *For the mountains I “Masked” off the BOTTOM of the FRAME using the same piece of Black foam-core, but this time I secured it to a tripod placed about 8 feet out in front of the #NIKKOR 1200mm f11 lens on a tripod. The 2 separate images are combined in-camera using the OVERLAY feature making a seamless double-exposure blend in the fog. I realize that many of you are saying to yourself: “Why not use Photoshop?” ...Well, you’ve heard me say it before: “I’m no Scott Kelby” ...I just find the “blending” properties of the Nikon In-Camera image OVERLAY feature to make the most perfect multiple-exposures...and I don’t need to do anything additional. *I’m just an Old Dog using a New Trick. • • • • • @nikonusa @nikonambassador #nikonnofilter #nikonambassador #nikonlove #nikonusa #photooftheday #mirrorlesscamera #mirrorlessreinvented #nikonz8 #sandisk @sandisk #zcreators #creator #winterlandscape #landscapephotography #imageoverlay

“Winter Winds” The Winter Winds are blowing strong Across the lake so cold, Reminding me when I’m outside That I’ve grown ever so old. Twilight skies of pastel and blue Are filled with remnant leaves, And the “Indian Summer” days of November Are distant memories. These nights I’ll need an extra blanket And another log on the fire, But December rings in Christmas cheer That warms my heart’s desire. “Fall to Winter Window”(Main Image: window silhouette) #Nikon #Z8, ISO500, 1/30 at f9, #NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f4.5-6.3 VR lens, WB 5000K... @SanDisk card. Welcome to another FALL COLLECTION image: This is a double-exposure made on Sunday morning during our first major snow storm here in Colorado was created In-Camera using the OVERLAY feature. As mentioned in previous IG posts over the past 3 months I usually begin with a SILHOUETTE...And thus it was, when I awakened at 6:15AM I instinctively grabbed my #Z8 and headed to the kitchen to see if the predictions of significant snow fall came true...It had with a foot of fresh powder! Keeping consistent with my quest to make a Fall Collection of images centering on beautiful Autumn colors I hurried into my cold-weather gear (18 degrees) and trudged through the heavily falling and ever increasing the blanket of snow in the back yard and began making images of leaves still clinging onto the branches. Then it struck me that my best “MAIN IMAGE”/Silhouette might best be achieved from inside the house, to which the laundry room provided a wonderful jet black silhouette of the door with its windowpanes revealing the blizzard-ish conditions outside. KEEP IN MIND: Using a PICTURE CONTROL High Contrast setting of VIVID the Black/BLANK areas of the Silhouette “Main Image” will allow the colorful second image/OVERLAY to easily and crisply “BLEED” through. I made some Silhouettes of the door-window and chose this one as it captured the blinding white Wintery scene perfectly. NOW FIND A COMPLIMENTARY 2nd IMAGE: I scrolled through images I made last week and chose some fallen leaves on the ground. All shapes, sizes and colors captured with overcast ambient light: NIKON Z8, ISO1000, 1/200 at f6.3, #NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f2.8 VR S lens, WB 6250K. All that’s left is to combine the 2 images In-Camera using the Z8 OVERLAY feature...Voila’...a double-exposure illustrating the change of seasons from Fall to Winter.

“Leaf LIGHT” (Main Image)... #Nikon #Z8, ISO1000, 1/200 at f8, #NIKKOR Z 105mm f2.8 Macro VR S lens, WB 9,000K...LIGHTPAINTING using a ProTac HL-X LED Flashlight... @SanDisk CFexpress “B” card. Welcome to yet another FALL COLLECTION image: WOW...34 degrees with drizzle/mist yesterday morning...Perfect for adding pictures to my Fall Collection. Image 1...(Main Image) is a small brown leaf only 3 inches in length and was ready to drop off the branch. I decided to add a little “kiss” of LIGHTPAINTING using a ProTac HL-X LED Flashlight. My flashlight is held about 10-12 inches away and I’ve added a home-made Gaffer Tape snoot on the end so I can pinch-down the snoot to form a small spot light to illuminate the rain drops. I’m just hand-holding the #Z8 with Dynamic-Area AF [s]...while holding/pinching the snoot/aiming the LED flashlight at the largest water drop. NOTE: The Black/EMPTY background is perfect for Image 2 and Image 3 OVERLAY images to BLEED through, while the illuminated leaf is bright enough to PREVENT those OVERLAY images from being seen. Image 2...Fallen leaves on the ground were actually captured 45 minutes after the pre-dawn Leaf (Main Image 1) ...NOTE: I purposely faded the opacity/gain of the fallen leaves in the OVERLAY que, which helped showcase the Main Image 1 Leaf. Image 3...Close-up Water Drops on a single leaf (Black&white)...This was a bonus as the OVERLAY allowed the Image 3 Water Drops BLEED through the fallen leaves...But not BLEED through the much “brighter” leaf. The resulting Triple-Exposure made In-Camera using the OVERLAY feature (RETOUCH MENU) blends the 3 separate images into 1 complete picture. As much as I have practiced/learned using the OVERLAY feature in all my Nikon DSLR and Z mirrorless cameras, I’m still amazed as to the creative imagery that can be made. ***Remember: Fall is coming to a close...Get out there and make new pictures for your own FALL Collection. • • • • • @nikonusa @nikonambassador #nikonnofilter #nikonambassador #nikonlove #nikonusa #photooftheday #mirrorlesscamera #mirrorlessreinvented #nikonz8 #sandisk @sandisk #zcreators #creator #imageoverlay #incameradoubleexposure #fallcolors

“Aspen Leaf Colour”(Main Image)... #Nikon #Z8, ISO1000, 1/800 at f11, #NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f2.8 Macro lens, WB 9000K... @SanDisk CFexpress “B” card. Welcome to another FALL COLLECTION image: HOW FAR CAN I PUSH IT: Throughout my 44+ years working as a professional photographer I always felt a responsibility to “PUSH” myself and my equipment...my Film...and the Digital process as far as was required to make pictures that others were not. ...The #Nikon Z mirrorless OVERLAY feature (a.k.a Image OVERLAY in Nikon Z7 series and DSLR cameras) This colorful “Aspen Leaf Colour” is actually the 5 multiple-exposures/OVERLAYS-minus the Golden background Overlay from yesterdays “ASPEN Leaf” IG post...But now with 15 additional exposures/images all combined using the #NikonZ8 In-Camera OVERLAY feature to make one complete 20 image multiple-exposure picture. This “Monet-ish” image of a single Aspen Leaf is 20 exposures/OVERLAYS combining small subtleties along with bold splashes of Fall color while continually OVERLAYING the “pieces of the image puzzle” that I photographed each day became multiple expressive components striving towards ONE complete Picture...Exhilarating! LIKE THE MASTERS OF OLD: This concept of in-camera “OVERLAYING” is much like a Painter when they add layer-upon-layer of paint to create Texture & Depth sculpting shapes & color onto the canvas to achieve the desired Artistic outcome. BUILDING ON THE MAIN IMAGE: With Dew-Drops captured during the cold morning PHOTO-WALK in September...to tall lakeside Prairie Grass using WB 3300K in early October...to Wine colored leaves on the bush next to my garage...to fading Yellow leaf bushes down the block...a hedge captured with a slow-shutter speed Pan-Motion at 1/8 th in late October...and fallen leaves in my backyard just yesterday November 15. I just kept Searching/Composing/Shooting and OVERLAYING in-camera...adding image-upon-image-upon-image...day after day...week after week. Finding, photographing, OVERLAYING the “puzzle pieces” first in my mind and then during each daily Photo-Walk. Pure EXPRESSION! ...Pure EXCITEMENT! ...Pure CHALLENGE! ...and Pure JOY!!!

11/16/2023, 5:01:31 PM

“Aspen Leaf” (Main Image)... #Nikon #Z8, ISO1000, 1/800 at f11, #NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f2.8 Macro lens, WB 9000K... @SanDisk CFexpress “B”card. Welcome to another FALL COLLECTION image: Those who FOLLOW my Instagram on a regular basis probably have a pretty good idea of how this In-multiple-exposure image was made using the #NikonZ8 mirrorless camera and it’s In-Camera multiple-exposure feature...BUT did you know that most of Nikon’s DSLR and Z mirrorless cameras have the OVERLAY feature. Check-out your own Nikon camera’s RETOUCH MENU. Image 1 ...”Aspen Leaf”...combines 5 separate images to form the one multiple-exposure that I pre-visualized on my Monday afternoon Photo-Walk. As this year’s Fall Season begins winding down here in Colorado and possible your own state, the leaves are falling to the ground where there are still many opportunities to make beautiful pictures. But rather than looking “up” ...try looking “down” to find new subjects. Image 2 ...is the step-by-step illustration which begins with my little subject held up with my thumb and index finger. This wonderful little subject stands alone as a fine image, but my mind was already spinning off in another direction. As illustrated I am holding the leaf so that it is back-lit by the afternoon sunshine. My first thought is to find a Black/EMPTY background yet still have the leaf brilliantly back-lit...The north side of my neighbor’s garage worked nicely. I then proceeded to make additional images of the same leaf, but each image is captured slightly closer or slightly farther from the camera by simply extending my arm 1 inch closer or father from the lens. I made over 20 “distance” variations of my subject including High Contrast B&W images using WB #18 GRAPHITE and #19 BINARY. ...I also made some Silhouettes of my subject against out of focus Yellow Aspen leaves. I made numerous OVERLAYS in-camera until I settled on this quintuple-exposure image. ***Remember: Fall might not be over where you live...So get out there and add to your own FALL Collection.

“November Moon”(Main image) #Nikon #Z8, ISO800, 1/100 at f6.3, #NIKKOR Z f24-6.3 VR lens, WB Black&White #18 Graphite... @SanDisk CFexpress “B” card. Welcome to our final FALL COLLECTION image for 2023: This final #Z8 OVERLAY image is a personal favorite of my 2023 FALL COLLECTION. As you can see there are 7 separate Images made over several weeks that I have been photographing the glorious change of my favorite season. MAIN IMAGE: I began with a Silhouette...a tree that was made in my neighborhood seven weeks ago. I used a High-Contrast B&W PICTURE CONTROL setting of #18 Graphite. Keep in mind that the Black/”EMPTY” space (the tree) will allow the next 6 exposures to “BLEED” through as I OVERLAY each individual picture in the OVERLAY process found in the Z8 and most all Nikon DSLR and Z mirrorless cameras. NEXT: I photographed a tree that had already turned colorful in Mid-September...I made an easy double-exposure OVERLAY and kept it in the back of my mind, and on the @SanDisk card, for possible future OVERLAYS to be added. EARLY OCTOBER: I photographed fallen leaves that I found along the way during my morning Photo-Walk around my neighborhood. I made over 100+ images of fallen leaves...all shapes, sizes and colors...loose, close-up and Macro. I chose two “Leaf” images and OVERLAYED them with my Main Image silhouette tree...and I like what I’m seeing. LAST WEEKEND: As illustrated in the adjacent breakdown of all 7 OVERLAYS image 6 is the Saturday snow storm. I used WB #18 Graphite. This single image is actually 3 separate OVERLAYS of snow falling. The Black/”EMPTY” space-background is my neighbors dark brown garage door. FINALLY: I captured this moon on a “thinly-overcast-softly-out-of-focus” last Friday. I composed it in the lower left corner...and captured the 7th image to OVERLAY...VOILA’...The change of seasons from Fall to Winter. **The multiple-exposures-OVERLAY journey that I’m currently on is ART...not editorial SPORTS news imagery...and I’m loving it. ***See y’all for AMA MONDAY November 6...at 9-10:00am(MST)***

“November Winds”... #Nikon #Z8, ISO1250, 1/320 at f7.1, #NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f4-6.3 VR lens, WB Black&White... @SanDisk CFexpress “B” card...SLIDE RIGHT to see 4 exposure OVERLAY breakdown. Welcome to another FALL COLLECTION image: November has arrived and most of the leaves have already fallen...but there are always pictures to make. MY OVERLAY THOUGHT PROCESS: MAIN SUBJECT: I wanted to illustrate leaves blowing/wrapping around an Aspen trunk. It was overcast the day I found a neighbor’s Aspen with a very dark background. Knowing that Black/Empty space allows an additional exposure to “BLEED” through during the OVERLAY process I set my Nikon PICTURE CONTROL for High Contrast Black&White: #18 Graphite. THE MASK: The white Aspen will prevent any OVERLAY image from BLEEDING through...But I wanted wind- blown leaves to BLEED though the Aspen trunk...SOLUTION: Using my black winter glove I placed my gloved-index finger resting over the front element of the lens...creating a Black “Mask” THE SEACH: With my Main Subject captured and Masked I needed some leaves blowing in the wind. I found a huge Willow tree a few blocks away and proceeded to make several images of the long/lazy leaves blowing on the wind while still attached to the tree and with a very dark background too. I used the High Contrast PICTURE CONTROL setting of VIVID. NEXT: There were plenty of fallen leaves on the ground. I photographed them using a Slow-Shutter-Speed of 1/8 second and panning quickly I captured a “Pan-ACTION” blur of leaves. To center them in the frame I needed to “MASK” the top and bottom of the frame using my black-gloved thumb-and-finger on the front of the lens to form a “Window” to see the leaves. THE SPLASH OF COLOR: Another neighbor’s Thorn Berry bushes with Red-Pink leaves created a perfect twisty color pattern to wrap around the Aspen trunk. FINALLY: With my 4 separate Autumn images captured I can now OVERLAY them In-Camera to create a quadruple-exposure OVERLAY: “November Winds”

“Aspen Turn”...(Main Image) #Nikon #Z8, ISO1600, 1/800 at f11, #NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f2.8 VR S lens, WB 8000K...LIGHTPAINTING using the ProTac HL-X single LED made by: Streamlight... @SanDisk CFexpress “B” card. Welcome to another FALL COLLECTION image: This #NikonZ8 picture of a tiny Aspen leaf is actually a Quadruple-exposure OVERLAY produced in-camera. The multiple-exposure OVERLAY feature is found in the RETOUCH MENU of most Nikon DSLR cameras and in all of the Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. In-Camera TRIPPLE-EXPOSURE: Images 1...(Main Image)...is a Lightpainting of a tiny Aspen leaf just beginning to turn Yellow. The previous night rain followed by thick morning mist/fog by the lake left everything soaked...Perfect for Macro details. Using a ProTac HL-X single LED flashlight of 1,000 Lumens I illuminated the only a single leaf, which left the background/other leaves underexposed to complete darkness. This “Dark or “EMPTY” space will allow Image 2...(Teal&Pink pattern) I made last week to “BLEED” through during the OVERLAY process. My Teal&Pink image is a slow shutter jerk-speed Pan of my neighbor’s hedge at 1/8 second, WB 3030K. Image 3...(Blue Streaks)...is also a slow shutter speed Pan of my other neighbors Blue Spruce tree...at 1 second, WB 2500K. I just panned the camera back and forth 6-7 times until I had a single image of sweeping Blue streaks. Now I combine this image with the Double-exposure of Image 1..Aspen leaf and Image 2..Teal&Pink pattern. NOTE: I can adjust the opacity of each individual image that I want OVERLAYED in-camera. THE FINAL IAMGE: Image 4...Is the complete Quadruple-Exposure made In-Camera using the Z8 OVERLAY feature. I love this picture as it appears as though the wet/saturated pre-dawn air is dripping all over the Aspen leaf. ***Remember: If you’re not out there making pictures...You won’t have any new pictures to add to your own FALL Collection. • • • • • @nikonusa @nikonambassador #nikonnofilter #nikonambassador #nikonlove #nikonusa #photooftheday #mirrorlesscamera #mirrorlessreinvented #nikonz8 #sandisk @sandisk #zcreators #creator #imageoverlay #fallleaves #fallcolors #incameraeffects #learnphotography

“Fall Mosaic”(main image)... #Nikon #Z8, ISO1000, 1/100 at f18, #NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR lens, WB 10,000K...Multiple-Exposure Z8 OVERLAY @SanDisk CFexpress “B” card. Welcome to another FALL COLLECTION image: Well Dave...You’ve finally LOST YOUR MIND! This #Z8 OVERLAY was created via the In-Camera OVERLAY feature found in the camera’s RETOUCH MENU. At last count I was up to 11 separately captured images of Fall Colors made over the past 3 weeks that I OVERLAYED one-on-top of the other to eventually arrive at today’s single IG image. POP ART of the 1960s: From Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans and Roy Lichtenstein's comic-book canvases ...the POP ART movement of the 1960s is practically defined by the images that these two iconic artists created and SOLD. And while I do not claim to be as creatively “FAR OUT” as Warhol and Lichtenstein, I am all about “experimenting” and “pushing the boundaries” of my mind and my camera’s capabilities. No doubt that I probably went too far with 11 OVERLAYED images, but going beyond one’s comfort zone will likely “move the needle” forward on your creativity...and will most certainly help you define what is possible and what is not. AFTER ALL: It’s never been easier or less costly to experiment and see/learn what is possible...what you like and don’t like...and what some people find fascinating and others find confusing. Perhaps author E.A. Bucchianeri said it best when he wrote, "Art is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone will have their own interpretation.” Luckily, for today’s photographer, digital photography is just the process of using electronic and computing appliances to capture and create digital images/photographs...and rarely is there a critic or photo-editor hovering over us when we are experimenting/pushing your personal creativity and learning what is possibly. ...And if it’s TOO FAR OUT there’s always the DELETE button. ***Remember: If you’re not out there making pictures...You won’t have any new pictures to add to your own FALL Collection.
