It's a potentially serious infection that is transmitted by some rodents, and in the Interior region in particular, the deer mouse. 🐁 You can get infected when hantaviruses from old rodent droppings and urine are stirred up into the air and then inhaled. This can happen when sweeping and dusting. Risks can be highest when cleaning a shed, attic or cabin that has not been used for a while, or when working in areas where mice may live, such as barns. Here's how it can be prevented: ➡️ VENTILATE: Opening windows and doors at least 30 minutes before and during cleaning can allow fresh air to circulate. ➡️ GEAR UP: Wearing a mask—N100, P100, R100 or N95—will help filter out airborne particles including hantavirus. Rubber gloves will protect your hands from contaminated surfaces, and goggles will protect your eyes. ➡️ CLEAN SAFELY: Avoid stirring up dust as much as possible by using a damp cloth or mop to clean dusty corners, rather than vacuuming or sweeping (which can put particles into the air). And then when people go to clean it up, like a barn or a trailer, a cabin in the spring, the mice have left behind some things that could make you sick, if you aren't careful about that.” Although the disease itself is not very common, leaving symptoms untreated can lead to serious health problems. “Serious symptoms can be, primarily respiratory. It's a rare disease in Wyoming, but it can be quite serious. And we have I remember cases of folks passing away due to this over the years,” explained Kim Deti. When getting started on your spring-cleaning efforts, it's important to remember that just a few safety precautions can help prevent you from contracting the hantavirus. Things like spraying down mice feces with bleach and wearing rubber gloves can help keep you safe. One Cheyenne local, Cynthia Lewis says she usually starts her spring cleaning by starting with the cluttered areas of her home. “Looking around and seeing what has become kind of a cluttered place. Go through and see what you need, what you don't need anymore.” Cynthia explained that although she has not had an issue with mice in her home, she SAYS mice can be evasive when trying to remove them. “If you have mice in your apartment. Busca refugio del clima por lo que elige lugares reparados para refugiarse. 📍Es por ello que es muy importante: 🫧Ventilar bien los ambientes cerrados antes de entrar. 🪵No acumular leña, madera u objetos donde pueda armar una madriguera (tener la leña alejada del hogar). 🧹No barrer en seco donde pueda haber excremento de roedor. 🪣La limpieza hacela: con un trapo húmedo cubriéndote la cara, usando guantes, y con lavandina al 10 % diluida en agua (una parte de lavandina y 9 de agua, esta solución tiene efecto durante 30 minutos por lo que se debe prepara y utilizar en el momento). 📍Si encontras un roedor muerto, cubrite la nariz y la boca, rocialo con lavandina diluida en agua y enterralo a 50 cm de profundidad. @parquesnacionales #hantavirus #prevencion #roedores #cuidado #difusion
