Possibly the best album in the overcrowded prison soul LP category, Ike White’s only LP has stood the test of time over the decades. By the time he was put away for life at the age of 19 due to a murder during a botched robbery, White was already known as a musical prodigy. After several years behind bars producer Jerry Goldstein caught wind of Ike’s talent and dragged a portable recording studio into his L.A. jail along with two other musicians and some backup singers and this album was the end result. Although the record remained relatively obscure it did catch the ear of Stevie Wonder who advocated for White and the end result being that he was released from jail after having served 14 years. White would then roll through literally countless marriages leaving behind a track record of broken hearts, burst bank accounts, fatherless children and as many unanswered questions as aliases. Changin’ Times indeed. Like Darondo the man was larger than life and his legend once discovered eclipsed his music, which is saying something as this music is simply outstanding. I got Changin' Times years ago well before Ike White had been tracked down living in Vegas under yet another alias with his russian émigrée wife, so like many I just had the album and the man was just a blank. In some ways the mystery surrounding the man allowed you more imaginative freedom when listening to the songs which all have a complex yearning quality that speaks to watching a beam of sunlight trace a path across the floor of a darkened cell. That Ike was a phenomenal musician is beyond question as he sings like an angel and plays the guitar like the devil, no wonder he had a way with the ladies. Dance to the Music – Sly & The Family Stone Released: 1968 Label: Epic Standout Tracks: "Dance to the Music", "Higher", "Ride the Rhythm", "Color Me True", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" Dance to the Music is the second studio album by Sly & the Family Stone. Its title track was the Family Stone's first top ten hit and stands as one of their most recognizable recordings. In contrast, to their more experimental debut record, Dance to the Music has a more pop-oriented sound. This was done at the request of CBS executive Clive Davis, who wanted the band to have a more commercial and radio-friendly sound. Because of this, the band did not think very highly of the album while recording it. The success of the Family Stone's new sound led to further developments in funk music and widespread influence in R&B and soul. Contemporaries like the Temptations and the Four Tops adopted a more psychedelic soul sound on releases like Cloud Nine (1969) and Soul Spin (1969) respectively, and newer acts like the Jackson 5 clearly showed influence of the Family Stone. Released one album, after being courted by Jerry Goldstein whilst still in prison for murder. He was charged and sentenced for murder in 1964 at the age of 19 and received a life sentence. He was released from CDCR Prison in San Luis Obispo after 14 years in 1979, following active campaigning. He then disappeared, living under a number of aliases including David Ontiveros (his mother's maiden name), David White and finally David Maestro under which he self-released two albums. He committed suicide by hanging at his home in Oceanside, California in 2014, just two weeks after he was tracked down, approached and interviewed by the production crew of a documentary film which was released in 2019 as "The Changin' Times of Ike White". Listening to it now, it still makes sense for me to have it. Wiki: The Rhythm Devils duo were formally recruited by director #FrancisFordCoppola to record the soundtrack to the film #ApocalypseNow. During 1979 and 1980, Hart and Kreutzmann, along with other musicians (mostly percussionists), Airto Moreira, Mike Hinton, Jim Loveless, Greg Errico, Jordan Amarantha, Phil Lesh and Flora Purim, recorded sessions at the Grateful Dead’s Marin County studios and “The Barn”, Hart’s studio in Novato. The process included improvising jungle sounds as they watched the film. The sounds were later edited into the movie. There's a Riot Goin' On is the fifth studio album by Sly & The Family Stone. The album stands in stark contrast to the group's more optimistic late 60's output with albums like Stand! and singles like "Thank You (Falettinme be Mice Elf Agin)". The latter single even gets a foreboding rework on Riot with the track "Thank You for Talkin' to Me Africa". Riot adopts a darker, muddy sound with overarching themes of apathy and pessimism, inspired by the tumultuous political climate in the U.S. and the burgeoning black power movement. Bandleader Sly Stone's increasing drug abuse and erraticism led to increased tensions within the band, leading to Riot being primarily recorded by Stone alone via extensive overdubs, the main factor behind the record's dense sound. The album was originally titled Africa Talks to You, but was changed in response to Marvin Gaye's album What's Going On released six months earlier. The cover photograph featuring a red, white, and black American flag with suns instead of stars was taken by Steve Paley. Design for the album is credited to Lynn Ames and John Berg. The side-long jam ‘free form funkafide filth’ kind of sums this one up…it’s ridiculously bloody good and I’m wondering if I’ve ever played it. No hint of the personnel listed on the sleeve except the obvious fact Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles are here but the photos do reveal that the badass horn section has features Hadley Caliman. He rocks a Trane-ish tenor and flute and Luis Gasca is also on hand for some lip busting trumpet. Blistering guitar solos aplenty, loads of percussion, great swirling floods of organ, big old bass and actually a fair bit of jazz. Stand! – Sly and the Family Stone Released: 1969 Label: Epic Standout Tracks: "Stand!", "I Want to Take You Higher", "Sing a Simple Song", "Everyday People", "You Can Make it if You Try" Stand! is the fourth studio album by Sly and the Family Stone. It was released a mere three months before the band's celebrated Woodstock performance, at which they played several songs from the LP. Despite several successful singles, Sly and the Family Stone had not yet had an album hit above 142 on the Billboard 200. Stand! shot straight to 13 and would be the first in a trio of top 20 studio albums for the band. Notably, the album features Sly Stone at his most levelheaded with it being recorded shortly before his cocaine dependency took over. "I Want to Take You Higher" has one of my favorite vocal performances from the band, with Sly Stone, Rose Stone, Larry Graham, and Freddie Stone all trading off on the verses. It also features fantastic solos from nearly every member of the band. The track and lead single "Everyday People" is credited with popularizing the phrase "different strokes for different folks". It is also one of the first songs to feature Larry Graham's signature slap-pop style of bass playing, a style he would greatly expand upon on the "Thank You (Falettinme be Mice Elf Agin)" single released later that year. Stand! is a superb release and one of the defining albums of the 1960's.
