The Vanderbilt Reichert Planetarium will celebrate Astronomy Day 2024 on Saturday, May 18, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm! Astronomy Day at the Vanderbilt is part of an international celebration of educational programs designed to engage audiences in the awe-inspiring fields of Earth and space science. Activities are free to all visitors who pay general admission. Sponsored by PSEG Long Island. This Vanderbilt STEM education event will include exciting science, take-home materials, and engaging discussion about science and society. Participants will create nebula spin art, investigate constellations, explore craters, and much more! These fun activities introduce guests to the ongoing research happening at NASA in the fields of Earth science, planetary science, and astrophysics. Astronomy educators will perform free earth science and astronomy demonstrations for adults and children. Rachel Miller an accomplished blacksmith and co-owner of Spirit Ironworks in Bayport, N.Y., will give a lecture at the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum on Restoring Historic Ironworks, with a focus on Samuel Yellin – Thursday, April 18, 2024, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. From museums to skyscrapers, to private homes, churches, hotels, banks, and universities, Yellin left his mark on the American architectural landscape. His metal designs, craftsmanship and artistry can be seen throughout the country. He was sought after by the elite for his skills and creativity, and his legacy lives on, not only in his works but also through his family business, passed down from generation to generation – from Samuel to his son Harvey, to his granddaughter Claire Yellin, who oversees the Samuel Yellin Metalworks Company today. During her lecture, Miller will guide the audience through the history and craftsmanship of Yellin’s works at the Vanderbilt Estate, Mansion and Museum. She is currently restoring the 18-foot weathervane that once topped the bell tower above the entrance to the mansion courtyard. This major undertaking gives her a unique insight into Yellin’s works and a rare opportunity for attendees to see images of his Vanderbilt work and to hear first-hand about the restoration process and its challenges. The restoration is expected to be completed in Spring 2024. This intriguing lecture will take place in the Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium Theater. As part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative and Artemis campaign, the Nova-C lander embarked on its first lunar mission on February 15. It will study the lunar surface environment and test technologies for future landers and Artemis astronauts. Odysseus is scheduled to land near the Moon’s South Pole region on Thursday, February 22nd, no earlier than 5:49 p.m. EST If successful, this soft Moon landing will be the first for an American-made spacecraft since Apollo 17, more than 50 years ago. A little zen for your Wednesday enjoyment 🌳 These gardens belong to a historic gold coast mansion. It's pretty awesome that at least some of these properties survive today, though many of the original stunning mansions were razed were razed over the years. Some of them are now schools, a few remain private, but others are now open to the public as museums and arboreta. Transport yourself to the heyday of Eagle’s Nest, a time when radio was the heartbeat of everyday life. Explore the festively adorned mansion and be serenaded by timeless Bing Crosby melodies, relive President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Christmas Eve commemorations, and be captivated by special holiday episodes of Suspense Radio. This holiday celebration masterfully captures the essence of the Golden Age of Radio, blending festive cheer with nostalgic charm. The Vanderbilt Mansion’s halls were decked by the Museum’s curators in collaboration with the Dix Hills, Centerport, Three Village, Asharoken, and Nathan Hale garden clubs. On Thursday, December 7, the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will host Greg Steinmetz, author of The Richest Man Who Ever Lived: The Life and Times of Jacob Fugger, for a lecture adapted from his latest publication American Rascal: How Jay Gould Built Wall Street’s Biggest Fortune (Simon & Schuster, 2022). In American Rascal, Steinmetz recounts the gripping life of Jay Gould, one of the nineteenth century’s most infamous robber barons, whose brilliance, greed, and bare-knuckled tactics made him wealthier than Rockefeller and led Wall Street to institute its first reforms. Steinmetz shares how Gould quickly became a notorious figure at the age of twenty-four, when he paralyzed the economy and nearly topped President Ulysses S. Grant in the Black Friday market collapse of 1869 as he sought to corner the gold market. American Rascal shows Gould’s complex, quirky character. He was at once praised for his brilliance by Rockefeller and Vanderbilt and condemned for forever destroying American business values by Mark Twain. He lived a colorful life, trading jokes with Thomas Edison, figuring Thomas Nast’s best sketches, and commuting to work on a 200-ft. yacht. The lecture will take place at 7:00 pm in the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium theater. The Vanderbilt Museum Education Department will offer a members-only program, A Child’s Life at the Vanderbilt Estate, on Saturday, December 2, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. For children in grades K-5. Children will tour the decorated mansion with an educator and hear stories about the Vanderbilt children and their family history. Like the young Vanderbilts, workshop participants will listen to 1930s radio programs and jazz, play period games such as jacks, marbles, and checkers throughout the house, and make a snow globe.
