Cotton warehouses, where 14,000 bales were received annually; a hotel, and many private homes were constructed. The Hampton Depot was unusual in that it included a warehouse for cotton in the same building with the passenger area. In its heyday, Braselton’s cotton gin was the primary processing location for portions of Jackson, Hall and Barrow counties. These days, the historic relic walks in a different form of high cotton as a dog-friendly brewpub. By the late 1890s, the three Braselton brothers’ business success had multiplied with the inheritance of their father’s profitable farming operation, which had grown with land acquisitions. Sometime after a sidetrack of the railroad was installed in 1902 along today’s Davis Street, the cotton gin was constructed with a capacity to gin some 2,000 bales of cotton per season. And with the ability to ship cotton directly from Braselton by way of the railroad, more money stayed in the community rather than paying dealers in neighboring towns to process the crop. The original cotton gin was destroyed when lightning set fire to the building in the late 1940s. A local citizen’s bucket brigade quickly assembled to fight the blaze, which prevented it from spreading to nearby residences. The building was a total loss, but the Braselton brothers had another one built in time for the fall cotton season. Not much has changed about the John Oliver Braselton Home since the Braselton Brothers Enterprise’s founder added the grand facade to the formerly humble farmhouse in 1904 — the same year the brick department store was built. Occupied by John and his wife, Ottis Blanche McDonald Braselton, who married in 1911, the house sits on the site of the original farmhouse John’s parents moved their young family into in 1876, making additions — both to the house and to their brood — over the years. There, John and Ottis raised their two sons, John Oliver Jr. and Henry Edward. The four of them lived upstairs while John Sr.’s mother, Susan Hosch Braselton, lived downstairs. John Sr. was the first of the Braselton Brothers to die in 1951, and it’s said that some 3,000 mourners attended his funeral. When the boys were grown, Henry Edward raised a family of his own in the house — upstairs, just like his father before him, while his mother, Ottis, lived downstairs. The house remains a private residence for his children and grandchildren, the fourth and fifth generations of the Braselton family, to this day. The property was also the site for the original Braselton farming operation. #TBT May is National Historic Preservation Month! Most people are familiar with the Alamo theatre in downtown, but many are unaware of the Gem Theatre that was also located on West Court Square. The theatre opened during the era of silent films, with record of the theatre dating back to 1911. The movie theatre featured one screen and 241 seats. Not only did we have two theatres in downtown, but they were on the same block!
