Some weeks if feels like something is being channeled through the earth into the bones of each player, and resonating in the hearts of everyone in the room. The holidays can be tough. All the preparations, traveling, navigating grocery stores filled with other stressed out humans, and often times there are old wounds that need tending to but have been ignored or left untreated for years. We get tossed into a whirlwind and then placed right back where we were like nothing happened. These mountains are rich with creativity and culture. We have spent two years showcasing the songwriters of the area who are able to harness the magic of Appalachia or weave their own sounds from within its wisdom. Every so often we take time to honor the “other” kinds of folk from round these parts and we thought, what better time to do that than on our favorite silly holiday. Rare me drinking a sour sighting @wickedweedfunkatorium the other day! They only had one IPA on tap, Pernicious IPA, that I actually had at the West Palm Beach airport last weekend! And as we all know, my favorite beer is free & cold, but my second favorite beer is a beer I’ve never had before. So we settled on the farmhouse sour. It was delicious! I love saisons/farmhouse ales, so this was a nice refreshing change of pace. Only downside to beer-ing in downtown Asheville is you have to pay for parking no matter what time of day it is. $3.50 at most lots for a daily rate, and you can stay as long as you want. Definitely not a bag gig especially if you’re checking out a couple other breweries in the Southslope area (which there are quite a few close by!) There’s been something really special happening at open folk lately. We’re following the same formula and tenets by there’s been a feeling of newness… perhaps it’s something for us to ruminate on this week as we take a Tuesday off and prepare for a very full autumn. As for last week… it was an evening of touring artists. Coast to coast, LA to Atlanta with some nomads in between and of course one of our powerhouse WNC songwriters. Each artists work honoring the one before and after them. The stolen land that we reside on — these Appalachian mountains — holds a lot of magic and to be honest, we were concerned/curious how an evening would go that was filled with writers who don’t breathe it in every day. It was so lovely to witness different magic, imported by beautiful strangers, tangling up with our sweet mountain air. So, I want to tell you guys why Friday's show is so important and why I need as many of you as possible to come out... Fringe is actually where my youngest son works. He had been playing my music in the restaurant (I didn't even know he listened to it 🤦🏾♀️) and other people began singing it and enjoying my music. When he told them it was his Mom they were all excited to meet me and book me for their venue. When the booking agent called I then discovered that the band she works with had shared the stage with Coast 2 Coast last year and that THEY were excited to hear that I was being booked. Apparently they are also LOVEY fans! 🤣🤣 (For which I am truly honored #Funkatorium ❤️) So I feel like it is important that I show up and show out for my son! He made this happen and apparently he believes I'm more than what I actually am here in this city 🤦🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️😫 SO, I need y'all to show up! It's free entry and it's going to be a good time!
