The Festival of La Mama Negra takes place in the town of Latacunga in Ecuador at the end of September and again during the week of November. This is a street party with a vibe that’s not for kids😁 La Mama Negra is one of the oldest in the city and it is a display of the varied cultural influences from its Spanish, Aymaran, Incan, Mayan, and African ancestors. The city streets fill to watch a parade of legendary characters pass by, bestowing blessings candy, and homemade moonshine that knocks you off your feet. The festival was established when the Cotopaxi volcano erupted in 1742. The locals of the region asked the Virgin of Mercy, the patron of Cotopaxi, to spare Latacunga. Today Mitsubishi announced its Momentum 2030 plan. The goal appears to revitalize the brand and focus on electrification blending into their existing powertrains. The more interesting point in the article is introducing 2 new models that are currently not in segments they occupy. I would hope this would be a pickup and a SUV. Maybe with the new Land Cruiser, Bronco, and others 4wds arriving, Mitsubishi will reignite the Montero nameplate in the United States? One can hope. @mitsubishimotors if you read this, please bring back a proper 4WD to market in the states! I’d be a buyer! The CEO states “The next 10 years will be great for this brand. The year was 2018. We’d been living and traveling in an RV for more than four years—full-time. It was amazing: moving to a new location every other Saturday and supporting our travel lifestyle via our boutique online marketing company. We worked Monday through Friday, often more than 40 hours a week, exploring on the weekend. I worked from our RV’s dinette, while Eric worked lying down on the sofa to ease his back pain as a disabled veteran. Now our son was one year old, which incidentally made work more difficult without childcare or a support community. I got up at 4:30 a.m. to get a head start on the work day. Up until that time, we did the RV park thing. We had hook-ups that supplied electricity and fresh water, plus a place to dump our sewage and used water. But we saw some of our RV friends doing it differently—like camping in grassy fields outside national parks, where bighorn sheep roamed outside the window. We knew they worked, too. Were we doing it wrong? Why were we restricting ourselves to these concrete jungles when there was such a wide, beautiful world out there? So we bought a 100-watt suitcase solar panel and decided to stretch far out of our comfort zone. We rolled up to Sand Flats Recreation Area overlooking Moab, where very few sites could accommodate our 40-foot behemoth RV. We deployed our 100-watt panel and were shocked when we made it 16 days with NO HOOKUPS. We had never done anything like that before. We didn’t know we could. Only a few weeks later in Jackson Hole, a new word passed between Eric and me. I had never said it outloud before. The word was “overlanding,” and it was the advent of something new for our family. Right now, we are back at Sand Flats in Moab. Thinking about how much we have grown in six years. Thinking that anyone can do it…you.

Yamaha Volunteers Protect Public Lands - by Arden Kysely ( @ardenkysely ) Yamaha takes seriously their responsibility to inform all motorized recreational vehicle (MRV) users of where they are welcome to ride, and where they aren’t. In doing so, they partner with non-profit organizations to prevent and mitigate damage to public lands. The company’s goal is to keep those lands accessible. Yamaha’s latest effort took place in the San Bernardino National Forest near Los Angeles. It is one of the most visited in the country, which creates huge impacts on the forest. Unfortunately, the effects of thousands of MRVs requires mitigation and improvements beyond the forest’s budget. This is where Yamaha, in concert the Southern California Mountains Foundation (SCMF), steps in to help. Recently, 50 Yamaha employees from the corporate offices in Cypress, California, and two locations in Georgia worked side-by-side with U.S. Forest Service employees and SCMF members. Overland Expo West is closest to home for most of the nomadic Overland International (Expedition Portal and Overland Journal) team, and we have a soft spot for the annual gathering of the tribe high up in the beautiful and rugged landscape of Flagstaff, Arizona. It is not often that we all get together, but this year, most of the crew will be there to answer any questions you may have, dish out some inspiration, and convince you to subscribe to Overland Journal in the highly unlikely event that you have not already. It has been another ridiculously busy week, but productive. Can the Hummer SUV Overland the Toughest Terrain? - by @scott.a.brady Moab has been the testing and playground of capable 4WDs for decades, equal to the Rubicon trail for both range of difficulty and notoriety. The sandstone slickrock of the Colorado Plateau has also become a required milestone for manufacturers, with engineers and test mules descending on the region for validation and tuning programs. All of the early EV Hummer SUV were overland tested in Moab, and it was finally time for automotive journalists also to have a chance to see how the new SUV performs. The trip worked perfectly for me, as I planned to be in the area for a long overland route through Capitol Reef and the Grand Staircase Escalante. The Hummer testing would not be a manicured test track or something easy like the Fins and Things trail; we would drive all the hard lines of Jaxs Trax, meandering through the Cameo Cliffs. OnX describes the route as “Difficult” with steep climbs, ridges, valleys, tight brush, and beautiful views. While I experiment with reviving gray plastic with clear coats of affordable spray paint and restoring old, worn, and abused metal until my fingers ache, the Inverted team is rebuilding classic 4WDs with care and attention that would embarrass the vehicle’s original builders. Since we have traveled as a family of full-time nomads, we need to transport all of our on-the-road essentials and have had to be equipped for all seasons and extremes of heat, cold, moldy wet, and dusty dry. Over a period of months, we explored North America from northern Nevada to southern Mexico with the Sea To Summit Big River Dry Bag, eVac Compression Dry Bag, and Hydraulic Packing Cubes, experiencing almost every variation of climate and terrain. So, this was Japan for me. What an awesome country it is. Beautiful nature, excellent infrastructure, friendly people, and gorgeous food. I can’t say there is anything I dislike about Japan. There are some nuisances, like the difficulty of disposing of garbage (there are no garbage cans on the streets), but on the other hand, perhaps that’s why you don’t see trash anywhere. Also, some very touristy places like Kyoto can be extremely crowded, but that’s part of the experience. After three months in Japan, from the very south to the very north, and often off the beaten track, I have so many fond memories. The people I’ve met have been incredibly friendly and caring, and the nature is so stunning, like something from another world. Japanese people are generally a little reserved, but if you approach them with respect, curiosity, and learn some basic Japanese words, they will go the extra mile for you. So, Arigato Gozaimasu, Japan, for taking good care of me and making me feel welcome wherever I was. I will see you again someday. As customs are cleared for Toto’s departure from Japan, I will now fly home to my own country, Denmark, to spend time with family and friends while I wait for Toto to arrive in Vancouver. And this break also marks another milestone. On May 9th, it will be exactly two years since I left my driveway at home to start my around-the-world adventure. Since then, I have had so many fantastic experiences that I could easily fill a book about it. I have visited 26 countries across two continents. It is also a milestone regarding Asia. Japan was the last country on my Asian leg, so that’s considered done.
