Since I shoot in the street a lot I get asked what my favorite shoot spots are in NYC. If I'm honest, I don't really have one. NYC changes so frequently that by the time I find a space I like, it's getting torn down or renovated, and I have to find somewhere else to go. However, if you asked me where my favorite place to shoot was period, I'd have to say the Ben Franklin Bridge in Philly. I love the lines and those blue girders and the fact that it doesn't have all the safety fencing that's on every bridge in NYC. I just have a thing for bridges and trains. Once upon a time, I had a mission to shoot on every bridge in NYC that had a walkway, but I've abandoned that... For this shoot, Ceima came all the way down to Philly to shoot this look on the bridge with me. There was construction happening that I didn't anticipate, so we wound up on the shadow side of the bridge near midday. The wind moved the skirt around wonderfully, but it was chilly, so we got what we could and got out of there. I don't want to be a nuisance to the people who use the bridge normally but one day I want to shoot an oversized gown on there. The lines and the wind would make that amazing! @ce_ma_p | E. Another shoot done in the airbnb from my last post. I only got to shoot with Amyah once sometime back in 2020. She was technically the 2nd model I ever shot with in Philly. This shoot was amongst a bit of chaos. I had a full house as I was reconnecting with some old friends that popped by that day around the same time as the shoot. I had to commend Amyah for being able to work through all the noise and laughter in the background to get these shots done. Shot on an early July morning in 2019. All natural light mixed with Alejandras endless energy. If I remember correctly, almost all the communication between us was me telling her how I'd like to frame the shot and her telling me how she'd pose for my framing. Erika is one of my favorite people to shoot with. She's always busy so it's a special thing when we get to shoot together. She's a professional dancer and natural bodybuilder, both of which were things I wanted to utilize with this shoot. I went with three point lighting for the jeans shots and two lights for the black outfit. I really wanted to show off her muscles while working toward a ripped jeans aesthetic that I was obsessed with at the time. These are from a summer shoot my buddy Vlad invited me to with pro model Cyrene. I love working with professional models. The communication is just different and refreshing. I took the opportunity to use my EF Mount Sigma 70-200mm on my Sony A7Rii with an MC-11 lens adapter. I found that it worked great on my Canon zoom lenses but not for my primes, which was surprising. I eventually completely replaced all my Canon lenses with Sigma E mount ones. Anyway, these were all natural light as we weren't allowed to use lighting equipment in the space. As time goes by I realize that I share less and less of the work I shot with my Canon cameras. I switched to Sony in 2020 mostly due to how ridiculous Canons prices were at the time for their mirrorless offerings. However, I can't deny that after a decade of shooting Canon I still love their DSLRs. This set was shot in 2019 on my Canon 5D Mark 2. I had just gotten back from Japan, and Phae was prepping to leave NYC herself. So, instead of getting over the jetlag like a smart person, I ran up to Washington Heights and got some shooting done. It was a good thing I did. I got some really nice shots that day, but it also showed me that somewhere between Japan and NYC, my camera had been damaged. I wound up manual focusing a lot of this shoot and had to use my backup camera for a client I had the week after. If I hadn't done this short shoot, I would have walked into that job not knowing my focus ring was damaged. The cost of repair was silly, but it set me on the hunt to upgrade to mirrorless, eventually leading me to Sony. Canon just priced themselves outta my life. @phaeamara | E. My friend Kym asked me the other day what my favorite shooting location is. I never actually thought about it. There are definitely some spots that I've used a few times, like this shoot with Misha. Mostly because I'm a slave to good lines and some subtle color. However, I can't really say I have a favorite spot. I have places I hate to shoot but everytime I find somewhere that I really enjoy shooting I start to worry about whether I've overused it and then abandon it completely. The first time I tried pole dancing was in 2016. It was one of the best things I never mastered. If you truly know me, you know I am part of the rhythmless nation. When it comes to dancing, I have hips, legs, and strong glutes for demonstration purposes only. I can not catch a beat, and I'm afraid if I was required to dance to save someone's life, I'd ask how you'd want to be remembered. One of the instructors that I met was @sammypicone - this was prior to @sada.nyc. I met a handful of others who tried their best to help me relearn my left foot from my right foot. Their instruction was solid; it was more about my personal limitations. I have huge trust issues. The word "have" is in the present tense because I acknowledge I have brave moments in strong doses. It is innate for me to be vulnerable. I can admit that I don't know something. I am not above asking for help if it'll guide me to understanding, but trust requires me to believe in people. I "trust" in brave doses only after I feel like we've earned each other. Sammy had patience for my insecurity. Dancing publicly puts me on edge. It is a freedom that I didn't think I earned, and it's taking a lot of therapy to learn that freedom doesn't need a reward system. Just like my dancing, I'm working on trust. It feels good to surrender to a process or person versus dipping my toe in. The process is easier when you find the helpers and mood lifters. I promised myself that I'd be that person to someone in some capacity just as Sammy was for me back in 2016 as I did a string of pole dancing classes. I even made it to a stage when my oversized Mohawk fell apart on stage - I'll share that another day. When's the last time you made someone feel safe to something new in the fitness space and beyond? A few years ago, my wife and I worked on a campaign for Machines for Freedom and Trek Bikes. There aren't many helmets that fit her head with dreadlocks, so we kinda went overboard with the helmet choice. Oh well, even though technically the helmet is for a different type of biking, she was better protected in these Brooklyn Streets! Can't be too careful out here. I don't shoot male models often. I really need to fix that honestly. Leo is probably the most professional male model I've shot so far. This shoot was after work sometime during the summer of 2022. He hits those poses fast and looks amazing for every shot. If we didnt have 3 looks, this shoot would have been over in like 10 mins. The minute I was ready to shoot, he'd hit like 6-7 poses, thrown his shirt open, somehow caught a breeze I didn't even know was coming and I swear some lady behind me caught the vapors lol. Shot these on my very first trip to Chicago. Been back a number of times now and I love that city. This was my first meeting with Eisha. After touring the Riverwalk a bit I knew I definitely wanted to shoot on and under the elevated trains. I got out the 17mm and tried to keep the composition as consistent as possible as Eisha posed and moved. This was sort of a dance, since I was moving with her. There was some really great poses that happened here that I haven't edited. Mostly because a big black garbage truck pulls out of the Alley and just sits in my background. I have a bunch of lights that almost never get used together. However, every once in a while I try to do something elaborate to flex my muscles a bit. I planned this shoot from the concept to execution with Tiffany. I think I initially told her i wanted to do some cyberpunk lighting and that I wanted to show off her tattoos. We went back and forth for a month figuring out the outfits, what lighting was gonna get used, the feeling we were going for, everything. It really is a blessing to be in step with someone creatively. It's a big reason why I shoot with certain people frequently. I think the only thing I felt was missing at the end of all this was I didn't use the smoke machine I rented very effectively. Tiffany has a flow when she poses, and I tried my best to keep up, which really had me forgetting the smoke machine was even there. This lighting is a mix of strobe and leds. Obviously, the wall lights are LEDs, the colors were from my ad400 and ad600 in strip boxes for rimlight gelled with pink and blue cellophane. I think this one took about a year of scheduling misses to get done. I can't even remember who reached out to who first to be honest. Either way, ScoobySnax was gonna be in Brooklyn for a few hours shooting near me and let me know she had some time in her day to see if we could finally connect. The time frame didn't leave much space for me to book a studio or anything elaborate so I had to think of something. Thankfully, she'd done this shoot in a small closet that really caught my eye, so I figured if she was cool shooting in tight spaces we could use my wifes closet and reading chair. When I told her what I planned, she was all for it. This set is from the first bit in the chair. All natural light for that dramatic feel. Gotta shout out my wife on this one for not getting mad at me for shooting on and around her outfits. An oldie but goodie. This was my first shoot with Alejandra who's one of the first pro models I worked with almost a decade ago. I'm a vocal Photographer. I like to talk, share my concepts and keep in communication with my models. On this shoot it was Alejandra who gave me a lot of insight into what more professional Photographers were doing, how they set the pace on shoots and what a model should bring to the table. I just remember this shoot being a breeze and getting so much expression from her was an eye opener. To this day, I'm very attentive to what a person is doing with their face in camera. I look back on my older shoots a lot. Mostly to see where I came from but also because, not having a formal teacher means that each shoot was my classroom. It helps, when I get in a slump or suffer a block, to look at these shots and remember the things I've learned along the way. One of the last looks of the day with Annie. I was having a discussion with a friend about "trash lighting" recently. Obviously, it's not trash, it's just what we call it. It's a style I rarely use since hard light isn't something I usually use unless I'm outside in the sun. However, it has a very edgy feel and this bodysuit look Annie did was a great style to use it for. Super simple lighting here. I probably should have just handheld the light but it was my Godox V1 with a 7 inch reflector. It's set lower than I'd normally use my lighting to shorten the shadow. This was an outtake from a magazine shoot Misha and I did together. After doing all the looks for the magazine submission, Misha wanted to do something a little more casual with the time we had left. I can't say off the top of my head how many shoots we've done at this point. This was only the second time we'd shot together and we hadn't quite built up that report we'd have later on. I was really happy with this shoot. It's always a great feeling to know that my work is being seen outside my local community. When AJ msged me to shoot on her trip to NYC last year I don't think it took more than a min for me to respond with a yes. The hard part was finding the time. It's raining today so I think it's a great time to reminisce about better weather. This shoot with Gemini was back in 2015. She met me at Coney Island beach at 5am in the middle of July! Don't ask me why I waited til the hottest month of the year to do a beach shoot, especially since we didnt even go in the water. Even at about 5:30ish in the morning the beach runners and people reserving their spots were already out on the sand. I remember being so nervous to shoot glam that as I was setting up my equipment I accidentally kicked sand on my flash. It fired inconsistently the rest of the shoot. I recently reedited these. After spending almost a decade learning and perfecting my retouching since this shoot, I felt like these shots needed a new life. I'm really happy the files held up so well. I work with a lot of dancers, but I don't think I've ever worked with a Break Dancer before Cas. This is one of those scenarios where I REALLY wish I had a fish eye lens. I know that if I had one I'd barely use it and it wouldn't be worth it in the long run, but as I was watching Cas dance and trying to catch her movements I couldn't help but think how funky it would look if it had a little bit of that fisheye distortion. Since I rarely shoot in my house, i figured I'd see how far I've come. Those older shots weren't nearly as dramatic as these though. Nothing special going on, It was our first time at Graffitti Pier so we were both just kinda exploring and picking the best spots to shoot. Crazy. Sexy. Cool. Pretty much the theme for Camisha since we met. This set was from our first shoot together back in 2011. There are actually a couple of firsts here. Aside from being my first time meeting Camisha, it was my first shoot after buying a second-hand Canon Eos 40D and my first shoot doing off camera flash outdoors. The Crazy, Sexy, Cool theme actually runs through all our shoots to this day. I just think it really, in my mind, perfectly described her as a person. I'm really surprised how well these pics held up. I redid the retouching on these sometime during COVID quarantine and the texture and sharpness on 10+ year old photos shot on a 10.1mp camera. Wow. I often say to new photographers who ask me about buying new and expensive gear, "Shoot with what you got. Learn to use what you have and upgrade once you've outgrown that equipment." Random warm day during a cold season. Ceima and I shoot together whenever we can. She was one of the first people to "model" for me when I picked up my camera. This was one of the first editorial submissions I ever worked on with a full production team. I forget where these were supposed to be published, I was very inexperienced working for others on this scale at the time and was just so excited to be hired that I didn't ask for things I deserved. Things like a tear sheet for example. These shots were my favorite of the day. There were 4 models and Arianne was the only lady. I believe she did shots with each male model but I can't remember. My friend Marlin and my wife Latoya were my assistants that day and I'm grateful for both of them because my anxiety was through the roof. I really didn't want to mess this up. I think the biggest thing I remember from that day was butting heads with the creative director (the person who hired me) about shooting on seamless paper. She had rented this gorgeous studio with all kinds of props and shooting stations, and we didn't use any of it. At the end of the shoot before the models got out of wardrobe I begged them to give me a few shots in the library station (the last photo) and it turned out to be one of the best shots of the day. The director actually considered reshooting the whole thing after seeing it! Smh. I don't remember anyone who worked that day's socials unfortunately... E. When your friend texts you and says, "Hey, I got some stuff you're gonna like from my trip. When can we shoot it?" What do you say? When it's Misha I say, "Meet me after work." I think I saw the net pants and orange top via text before we met up that afternoon. So I had a few hours to think of what I was gonna do with them. The rest I just kind got inspired on the spot. She and I have shot so many times I wasn't really worried about anything anyway. She had bought these outfits from a trip to Isreal and the weather was perfect and I didn't use any lighting whatsoever. I think halfway through this shoot I said to her. We should try to get these into a magazine. Idk if I should have said it or not because she went into full model mode versus the playful poses she was doing in the beginning. Ten years ago, I would've questioned if this version of me could be happy in all of her big bellied, apple shape glory. I can proudly say yes. Aside from my smile, my favorite part of this photo is my stomach. I love how it takes up so much space that I naturally have pockets on the sides, a place where the hands of my lover stay warm. When I laugh, it carries the strength of the ocean. I love the honey baked bronze tone that glistens on my Black skin and the texture in my stretch marks. I love that the person who captured this image photographed in the way that he sees my beauty, and I can look at it as a reflection from a loving moment. Neha was in NYC for Fashion Week and walked the runway in this gorgeous dress. When she reached out to me and showed me the dress, the first place I thought of was my beloved Municipal Bldg. A Photographer mentor I had when I was starting out a decade ago said, lighting imperfections are harder to hide when it's just light and skin. This forces you to pay more attention to everything before you press the shutter. Or something like that. I can't remember exactly what he said... Let's hear it for happy accidents! This shot was supposed to be low-key. It was the first look Giulia was in for the shoot. I had taken a few shots with the initial lighting setup the organizer setup but I wanted something different. While other photographers were shooting, I was setting up v-flats to do a low-key lighting setup for my turn. My turn comes, I set my power on the strobe, I ask her to hike the skirt a bit and I click my shutter. I then realized that I forgot to change my ISO settings since we'd been using LEDs at first and now I was using a strobe. So my low-key lighting had become high key lighting. And it looked good! So I said fuxk it. I'll save the shadows for the next look and ran with it. Happy accident. @big_frontinaa | E. As a New Yorker I'm used to how fast things change. A place I love could one day just transform into something new or disappear entirely in the name of progress. I really like shooting in Battery Park City. The lighting is perfect on either end of the day. However, with the water levels rising, it has begun a bit of a transformation, and one of the spots in these photos no longer exists... This shoot with Misha was before that. Funny thing is this whole shoot was centered around the new shoes she just bought. Kind of like an impromptu shoe campaign shoot. I didn't post the more shoe centered shots here, but it was a nice challenge to have such a specific goal. I think we walked from the ferry to Stuyvesant High snapping pics along the way in about 4 different outfits. Every now and then I love to have a challenge like this. Stuff I don't post anywhere like doing e-com, product, or other types of Photography just to sharpen my skillset. I was also still getting used to shooting on the Sony system. For about 2 years I shot primarily fitness professionals. Did a couple of campaigns for sneaker and fit brands and did promo for professionals in the space. This shoot with Lauren was one of those. I remember it was cold af that day. While I was in my coat and hoodie, Lauren was out there in her leggings and flexing her muscles for the camera. I don't post these often but I loved shooting them. The first shot is one that people reference when they ask me to shoot fit to this day. Looking back through the archives and found these from my shoot with Gemini back in 2012. I can't believe these are over a decade old! I remember at this point I had just started doing paid jobs and almost all my equipment was 2nd hand. This was shot in my hallway on a Canon Eos 40D with Elinchrom D-Lite 4s and 24x24 softboxes that came in the kit. I think I was using the Canon kit lens back then as well. That 28-135mm was a workhorse for me at the time. I wouldn't buy my first 24-70mm for another 6 or so years. I keep these old shoots to remind me how far things have come. From my experience, learning to retouch (this is way overdone), to the people I've met who helped me learn and grow. Honestly, I can't see myself leaving Photography behind. Jenn and I had been planning to shoot a set for Boudoir Inspiration Magazine before the world shut down and the studios closed up. We wound up improvising and shooting 4 looks in her apartment. Sometimes you gotta get out of your own comfort zone. My friend Vlad invited me to shoot vintage with Angel Raven and that whole morning before the shoot I kept saying to myself "Vintage isn't my style. What am I going to do?" Once upon a time I wanted to make a coffee table book. Something introspective, discussing the people we are versus the persona we show the world. That's what the torn stockings was supposed to represent. Tearing away the false to show the person underneath.
