I’ve spent the last couple of days helping the team hang the group exhibition at the Hornsey Library (so satisfying the work/people are brilliant!) .. which starts today and continues till 19th May, details on the final slide. I’ve always loved that irony because decorative art is usually pretty and joyful, but for me the process of painting is a way to externalize my emotions. The collage aspect of these paintings, what we might call their visual stutter, clearly reflects the fragmentation of modern life and the impact of technology. When considering them we may well wonder, Has this terrain been surveilled by drones? Does the imaging, alternately blurred and high definition, overlay Impressionism and computer rendering, calling to mind video games, satellite imagery and observation en plein air? Patricia Ayres builds each sculpture by wrapping yards of elastic, slowly developing a corporeal form that is at once imposing and vulnerable. “Edgar” A portrait from life sculpted in clay before Christmas. This work had to be put aside for a few months. Now back in the fold of jobs to complete. The work was sculpted on a wire armature. I decided at the weekend to remove the work in small sections and then stick them back together. Here’s the time-lapse videos I took of the process. I score and wet the surfaces to be joined and apply a generous layer of slip to both sides. I press the two wet pieces together and hold them in position with cocktail sticks. The cocktail sticks are removed once the join is solid and the holes filled with clay. While I have access to the inside of the work I prick the surface to allow trapped air to escape during the firing process.
