For advocacy to work, there needs to be buy-in. Successful advocacy does not exist within a vacuum; various stakeholders are needed in order to create the change we are trying to achieve: social change and inclusivity for Asian Canadians. Buy-in comes from all kinds of stakeholders, and some of them can be corporate partners. Although the question of performativity can come up as a valid concern, it is important to recognize that having Asian representation in the mainstream is part of what we’re fighting for, and having established brands use their platform to support our cause opens doors for greater change. #elimin8hate #buyin #advocacy #asianrepresentation
According to a new report titled “Strangers at Home: The Asian and Asian American Professional Experience,” carried out by Coqual, more than one in three (36%) of Asian and Asian American professionals say they have experienced racial prejudice at their current or former companies. This report documents the daily indignities of racism and microaggressions, addresses a broken career pipeline, and acknowledges the diversity within this large cohort and why it is important to disaggregate data about them. “We are all part of one another” - Yuri Kochiyama, Civil Rights Activist Yuri Kochiyama was a Japanese American political and civil rights activist. During World War II, the U.S. government forcibly removed her and her family to an incarceration site for Japanese Americans. For fifty years, Kochiyama spoke out about oppressive institutions and injustice in the United States. A hybrid storytelling/live music concept that told the Chinatown community’s history while mixing my personal story with lots of surprises. All that layered with live music, images and video.
