They’re coding them to use the color sensor to stop at “gems” and track the colors with bar graph coding blocks. 🫘 🇲🇽 H day in Kindergarten was Happy Cinco De Mayo, so in STEM class we made “Mexican Jumping Beans” after learning how the real ones work. By the last class of the week my pop was flat, so we used baking soda and vinegar. This worked way better than pop!! Today, over a thousand 5th graders embarked on a simulated manned Mission to Mars! After months of preparation, they presented their uniforms, mission patch, life support system, and Mars facts at Technical Briefing, built a habitat, sang sagas, enjoyed lunch in their habitat, embarked on a knowledge quest, and much more! They all completed the mission successfully and excellently. My first 3D design for the printer!! I made the design on Tinkercad (the orange pics), exported it to my 3D printer software for “slicing” (the yellow one), saved it to the SD card through the USB drive, transferred it to the printer, calibrated the printer, selected my file, et voila!! From design to holding it in my hand in under an hour! I’m thrilled! The print took 22 mins. I was NOT confident in my ability to use this, so I was worried about teaching it. But now that the covers are FINALLY in, I want my older kids to have this feeling too!! It’s Earth Month! In preparation for Earth Day next week, I’m having my K-1 kids draw their age as seen in the cross-section of a tree! This is really a 5-min activity at most, but the kids love coloring and adding to it, so it has the potential to fill a longer time! I call this a Platform Tower and it is another great choice for using during your formal classroom observation! This challenge features teams building only one level of the platform and rotating positions to continue building on a tower started by a different team. It's the ultimate teamwork activity! NEW SHAKE TRAY! We tried a new method of shaking our earthquake-resistant structures. I clipped a foam board to a plastic tray/ It was held aloft on pieces of elastic. This made a great springboard for earthquake shaking since it bounced and moved side to side. The different materials we tried are below! 🌍️Teams could choose from a variety of items. 🌍️cardboard and craft sticks 🌍️ cardboard and straws 🌍️ cardboard and marshmallows The LAST photo is a close-up of our new shake tray. Recently, NCI’s FIRST Robotics Team, STAGS Team 1262, kicked off their 2024 season at Blacksburg High School on March 1-3 for the Chesapeake District Blacksburg VA Event. The STAGS walked away from their first competition with awards for Team Spirit, Safety, Safety All-Star, and Best Cart. Their drive team fought hard, and they advanced to Match 12 of the semifinals before being eliminated. The STAGS ranked 13 out of 25 with a record of 10-10-0." After completing our fossil dig, my students sat down to identify and illustrate what they found! They realized that some of the bones were actually dinosaur fossils, and others were from local wildlife (such as the coyote skull). Some of them even found human artifacts like arrow heads! Last month, our 4th grade classes participated in the amazing Trabuco Field Study program! The entire program was a hands-on investigation about how erosion, fossil history, and soil science influence the best locations for housing developments. My class started off with stream tables to study how water flow, slope of the hill, and vegetation impact erosion. Students illustrated each station and wrote down observations.
