DAY 3-4 GERMANY & FRANCE ๐ฅ๐ Stayed in Nuremberg in Germany and left for Macรณn the next morning in France which was our next hotel stop. Did some washing in a launderette and enjoyed some seriously buttery croissants & brioche. Conclusion: passing through France leaves you 5kg heavier ๐ ๐ฅ๐ซฃ๐ฅ๐ฅจ Germany - pockets lighter! TWO YEARS since we left UK for our family adventures around Europe in our car! Sweden was our first destination in January 2021 for 3 months and itโll the most magical and wholesome memory held in our hearts forever. Iโll never forget the night we arrived. How the awesome concrete Scandi house smelt as we opened the doorโฆ our first sleep there (see last video to see how exhausted Luis was from the trip ๐)โฆ Swedish fresh air, beautiful wooden houses, the bluest skies I have ever seen in the Winter and just so many unforgettable family memories created there. Kai was only a BABY. 8 months old ๐ซฃ We sold everything and opted for this new way of living for a while and to this day - itโs the best thing I have ever had the balls to do ๐คญ So proud of us. Not without its challenges of course, but we didnโt want a boring predictable life anyway. Our family has experienced so much growth together and as individuals. This one deserves a place on my grid. At the end of summer we found our way over to a little village that the locals called โLittle Australia.โ This small village in France will forever remember the sacrifice of the young Australians who saved them from German occupation and potential destruction in 1918. A British general later called the Australian attack โperhaps the greatest individual feat of the warโ. The Australian flag still flies over Villers-Bretonneux and a town hall plaque remembers the events of that night. Following the war, schoolchildren in Victoria Australia helped raise the funds to rebuild the village school, named Victoria School, and a plaque recalls the diggersโ sacrifice. Jamesโ great uncle has his name place on these walls. You can see the children pointing to it. Sadly he died. It wasnโt until 20 minutes after we left that I found out my great grandfather was fighting just at the town over. ROMA We explored the Vatican City. There is far too many rooms and places for the kiddies. We did our best but there was still so much to see. The museum is huge and impressive to say the least. It was a stinking hot day so we tried to stay in as much shade as possible. Where we stumbled across one of the famous places to eat. Weโve had it saved it to our list for ages. It did not disappoint. (Although you canโt beat a house made Ragu and once you master a real carbonara, nothing compares.) St. Pauls Basilica was a treat, with crowds just as long as the Vatican. Both times we were able to jump the crowds and go right on in because of our children. Italians have a great saying, โChildren are our future.โ They have a place at every table (no kiddies tables) and are respected. Stunning, isnโt she?! I must admit I donโt know much about Mont Saint Michel. James has been to see the Abby a few years ago and really wanted to take us. Iโm so glad we went along to see its architecture. The fine workmanship had us in awe. With 350 steps and many small children, how did everyone stay happy? Simple really, Abilene on Jamesโ shoulders the entire time and a reward of ice cream if they stayed strong on their legs. ๐ On our drive over we learnt a few fascinating facts about this place. It was born from a dream. It once had a train station. The island has the highest tides in Europe. The bay has quicksand. Its structure is symbolic of France's ancient social hierarchy. It has a hidden chapel. Iโm so glad we were able to walk where so many others have before, where battles were fought and men and women found solace from the world. We came and conquered! The Roman Baths has been our favourite outing to date. The kids have learnt about the Romans for a term every year. Iโm a HUGE history buff. To pass my love of Ancient history onto the children is really exciting. Noah absolutely loved seeing how these baths were once thriving with Romans. He kept whispering just how incredible it was. The videos and actors brought to life their civilisation 2000 years ago. There were pools for healing, swimming, men and women only pools, saunas, massage rooms, changing rooms and bathrooms. Itโs been a long time since I was last here and I seemed to have forgotten so much. What I will never forget though is how smart these people were. At the height of their power they created aqueducts and had heated flooring, hot rooms and warm pools that still deliver hot bubbling water to this day! I only wish we kept them clean and beautiful to experience the same healing properties the Romans took advantage of so long ago. A great way to refresh the kids minds just before entering a historical landmark is to play a small podcast or You Tube clip on what they are about to see. Works a charm! Ps: the photo where all kids and the actress hold their right hand in the air is how Romanโs greeted each other. It was a sign of peace to show they were not going to draw their swordโฆ bully for those who were lefties. A few more snaps of our Safari Tour from our week in Dubai. This is such a wonderful cultural experience for the whole family. Our tour guide picked us up from our hotel. We didnโt need to worry about a thing. From the FWDing, to Henna art, photos with falcons, the most delicious Middle Eastern Banquet. We were all mesmerised. When we arrived to the camp we were greeted with camel rides and house made perfumes! Each of the girls tried a different one. After light refreshments we sat back and watched the show. The safari had traditional dances and fire breathing performances. After dinner we were met by three camels walking across the desert with the night sky glittering around them. Truly beautiful. Our tour guide then picked us up and dropped us back to our door step. It was all so easy and incredibly professional. Das Beste an allem ist meiner Meinung nach aber nicht etwa das Essen in Thailand (obwohl Curry mein absolutes Lieblingsgericht ist), die Luxus-Villen mit Outdoor UND Indoor Pool (echt verrรผckt), all die Island-Trips auf Pig-Island, Chicken-Island, Phi Phi etc (wobei die pradiesisch schรถn sind), und auch nicht der Strand und die tropische Wรคrme (obwohl ich dies schon extrem feiere). Wenn ich aber nur EIN einziges Highlight hervorheben mรผsste, wรคre es ganz klar... der Familenzusammenhalt! Dass wir nur zu dritt sind und niemanden kennen, keine Familienangehรถrigen um uns haben und auf uns alleine gestellt sind ist zwar manchmal schon eine Herausforderung. Aber gleichzeitig erleben wir extrem viel, machen viele Sachen zusammen durch (gut und schlecht) und sind aufeinander angewiesen. Dies stรคrkt den Familienzusammenhalt und bringt uns nรคher zusammen. Ich wรผrde behaupten, dass das Verhรคltnis zwischen uns dreien noch nie besser war. My husband pitched for 30 jobs a day for the last year. He looked at me at so many moments and said โI know itโs coming, trust meโ. We had nothing left in our bank account. Scotland - Newcastle - Amsterdam On the 15th of January last year we woke up from our last night in Scotland & drove to Newcastle to catch an overnight ferry to Amsterdam. The ferry was brilliant. We were finally able to relax a little bit and be together in one little cabin ๐ after weeks of so much stress and not really seeing each other. We were LAST to go on the ferry ๐ซ as we almost got lost at the port. Sasha had been pulled up about not having a second covid vaccination but since she was 16 it was all ok as a dependent. Anyway, we made it, managed to distress a little. Kids loved the ferry and we all had a nice sleep. We are getting Estonian passports for our kids through mum ๐ช๐ช๐๐ฅณ Woohoo! So lots of bureaucracy past couple of weeks for us. All super easy and straightforward, but the most annoying thing is having to legalise kidsโ UK birth certificates with an Apostille Hague stamp ๐ฉ Itโs a bit costly (if urgent from ยฃ200 per document) and just takes timeโฆ Darn #Brexit ๐ก But we are excited for the kids to have EU travel documents too soon! But what about the birthday parties, family and all the birthday presents from the friends for your kids? ๐ค For some - birthdays is such a big deal and every year itโs the biggest event full of treats, surprises and unforgettable activities with lots of people. Donโt get us wrong - we miss our family and would love to see them move often, but because we arenโt able to see them on our kidsโ birthdays, we donโt feel guilty about that. Our kids certainly donโt! We celebrated Kaiโs 1st birthday and Italy as a family, Sashaโs 17th the other week and Leonโs 4th on Wednesday! So surreal being in my homeland with my kids and their dad ๐ซถ๐ผ๐๐ Itโs like we have always lived here. There are no cultural surprises as such. Lots of similarities with Sweden last Winter, but at the same time all completely new. The country has changed so much since I moved away 22 years ago. I changed so much too obviously. Iโm absolutely in love with it all over again and so blessed to be in a gorgeous place like this all together.
Almost 2 weeks here in Estonia and itโs like we have always been here. We are even embracing the slower pace of life too. Something we struggled with at the beginning in Sweden last Winter. No bathtub ๐ No problem! We have stayed in some nice places (and some not so nice) and managed totally fine without a bathtub for kids. Swedish house was out of this world, but didnโt have a bathtub. Same in Estonia. A big plastic box we use to pack our things into when travelling does the job really well if youโre stuck for ideas! ๐ This was one of mumโs initial worries actually before we began this journey / lifestyle. A little gallery from the weekendโฆ we had a quiet one (apart from a walk in Gallipoli) as Leon wasnโt feeling too well, we had no water all day and it rained. So we just stayed home. Eventful day with buckets and a pile of dishesโฆ. ๐ Not going to lie - kids are so used to staying active and doing something every day, that days at home are no longer โcosyโ or lazy even in the rain. The โwhere are we going todayโ 19473929 times an hour can get a bit much and even on โla domenicaโ even everything is shut, we had to take the kids to lidl for a bit of variety ๐ ๐ Hey, it did the trick. PRE-SCHOOL IN ITALY ๐๐ค๐ผโค๏ธ You may have noticed we share a lot of our daily โschool-runsโ on stories. Yes, Leon who is nearly 4 attends a pre-school nursery (scuola del infanzia) here in the South of Italy. We were so lucky to find a private pre-school establishment that operated through the whole Summer (apart from the Ferragosto 2 week holiday) and accepted Leon as their pupil! ๐ซถ๐ผ I think government run nurseries would be a bit harder to get into, but private was super easy for us. Itโs an international school. Or at least they teach their kids English and Spanish a little bit - ideal for us. So yeah, itโs insanely cheap compared to UK childcare prices and he can attend 6 days a week including Saturday for โฌ130 a month. Lunch is โฌ4 per day and itโs a whole little menu different on each day using local seasonal ingredients. Leon is a picky eater, so we get him to eat lunch at school and he loves is. Tries so many new things. And yes you guessed it - he is learning Italian and speaks and understands a little bit. Weโre so proud. We understand how socialisation is important and learning at that age, so were very lucky of this opportunity. It was very difficult to get him into school temporarily in Sweden. WHO WE ARE - MEET US. The boss of the family - Kai (1). Loves trees, loves his siblings, loves food, adores pulling hair and gives the best kisses. Special cuddles for daddy only and belly laughs for his big brother. Adores the Sea and climbing! Leon (3.5) - the second or probably the real boss of the family. Sweet tooth and and an even more sweeter big heart. Full of love, curiosity and fun. Loves bikes, cars, motorbikes - anything with wheels. Everyone just feels happy in his company. One big cuddly bear. Sasha (16.5) - the big sister, the mum and the dad when parents are busy, the best friend, the teacher... So smart and patient and definitely the funniest in the family. "The young woman with the blue eyes" who instantly has people stop their lunching at cafes dying with curiosity who she is to us. The dad (Luis) - the one with the best ideas, the balls (haha) to say it like it is no matter what and who. Always with the best intentions and everything for the family. Consistent, dedicated and never gives up or wines when life throws curve balls and there are always many. The mum (Tatyana) - {luis wrote this} The anchor of the family , Il Capo as she is best known within our friends in italy. The most amazing woman I have ever met. Patient, unbelibably creative, a visionary and the force that always keeps us moving.
