ELDERFLOWER Reduces the formation of mucus in the body, especially in the sinuses. During the winter months, the chances of catching a cold or the flu spike, making us more susceptible to getting sick. These infections predominantly target our nasal passages and can escalate into sinusitis, commonly referred to as a “Sinus Problem.” Imagine it as an extended cold, with the classic symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat, headache, and that irritating post-nasal drip. Sinusitis doesn’t stop there; it throws in facial pain around the sinuses and bad breath. Causes range from post cold infections to nasal polyps, tumors, immune system irritation or infections triggered by allergies. Allergies, in particular, can increase sinus issues by amplifying inflammation and swelling within the nasal passages. Now, let’s talk heat, since too much of it can be a factor in sinus problems. Think of it as your nose getting a bit too heated. When your nasal passages are congested, they can’t perform their usual duties of warming, filtering, and moisturizing the air you breathe. Poor sinus drainage, leading to an overall sense of unwellness. Moreover, environmental factors like seasonal shifts, heightened winter humidity, and atmospheric pressure changes during storms can contribute to the discomfort associated with sinus troubles. • • • • #elderflower #anticatarrhal #antiinflammatory #antioxidant #antiviral #respiratorysystem #respiratorysupport #sinus #winter #herbal #herbalmedicine #herbalhealing #herbaltea #diasporaherbs

Louis Farrakhan grew up with a love for singing, music and dance but on the contrary was raised by a mother that often spoke on freedom, justice and equality of African Americans in America. During his show business days, he caught the attention of the Nation of Islam in Chicago while performing and was invited to the Nation of Islam’s Saviors Day convention in February 1955. After a few weeks of joining the Nation of Islam and renaming himself Louis X, he made the decision to quit show business after Malcom X delivered a message from Elijah Muhammad to the New York Mosque stating “all Muslims had to leave show business or leave the Temple.” After laying aside his passion and truly realizing his purpose in life, the renamed and now Louis Farrakhan decided to fully dedicate his life to the teachings of his predecessor, Elijah Muhammad, throughout the world, becoming head of the Nation of Islam. Farrakhan believes in humanity and often verbally paints a picture of how the world could be if we rid our negative habits and understand our divine purpose for being here. “Discipline and structure is what we need in order to take control of our lives, and what which around us. Start applying discipline and structure to your life and see how much better your life will become”.

“It’s time for us to start changing things for the betterment of ourselves, our children, family, and friends all over the world. In order to help others, we must change our own selves first.” I’m pretty sure we all had Tae Bo tapes in our households growing up. Billy Blanks was a fitness icon and prominent black figure within the fitness industry during the early 90’s. Through his own Tae Bo program which focused on the blend of tae kwon do and boxing, his main goal for everyone was to focus on becoming the best and healthiest version of self that you could possibly become. Blanks radically changed the fitness industry for years to follow for upcoming black fitness and wellness instructors. Take a moment to think about how far we’ve come since then!

Today we highlight the author of The Spook That Sat By The Door, Mr. Sam Greenlee. The Spook That Sat By The Door portrays the black power movement during the 60s and 70s. Mr. Greenlee’s novel was inspired by his time as a USIA officer (1957-1965) while serving several embassies — Iran, Iraq, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Greece. He considered himself a “token Negro” and believed he was hired as a prop to sit by the door in order to show foreigners that progress was being made in America towards racial equality.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mr. Greenlee went on to turn his novel into a movie which was no easy task. Authorities tried to stop filming, refused to allow the filmmakers access to Chicago streets, and ultimately made it difficult for his crew to hire staff and acquire all the firearms required for Greenlee's script. Richard Hatcher, the first African American Mayor of Indiana, helped turn this film into reality. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Spook That Sat By The Door debuted in 1973 for a successful 3 weeks before it was pulled by theater owners who claimed to have been contacted by the FBI. Mr. Greenlee’s purpose was never to advocate extreme actions that the film brought, but rather explore what he considered a fantasy of many young black men at the time — turning the tables on white establishment by using its power against it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When asked why he never made another film, Mr. Greenlee said it was because he considered himself to be a writer and he was “embittered by his film experience.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “But if I never made another film, look at the film I made.”

We rise with activist and one of the 20th century's greatest writers, James Baldwin. Baldwin, most known for Notes of a Native Son, Nobody Knows My Name, and The Fire Next Time often wrote about the struggles of social and racial disparities on what it means to be black in America, brotherhood, and universal love through his many essays, poetry, and novels. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ▪️“Those who say it can’t be done are usually interrupted by others doing it.” – Notes of a Native Son⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ▪️"The only way to live, is to know that one day you will die. If you are afraid to die, you will never be able to live." – Conversations with a Native Son: Maya Angelou and James Baldwin⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ▪️“Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up." – Nobody Knows My Name; More Notes of a Native Son

We shift our light to Dr. Alvenia Fulton, the mentor of last week's spotlight, Dick Gregory.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Born in Tennessee and eventually migrating to the south side of Chicago to open her own health foods center, Dr. Alvenia introduced alternative diet and lifestyle to her community off the strength that herbs can fix any condition. She was a huge advocate in eating as raw and as natural as possible because it was “the way God intended us to eat,” but also believed that our body grows sick and breaks down due to the foods and drinks (alcohol) we consume.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Like many can relate, Dr. Alvenia grew up on good ole soul food cuisine. However, it wasn’t until her early-to-mid 40’s where she developed stomach ulcers in which she naturally healed within 13 days by use of raw cabbage juice. Like Mr. Dick Gregory, she too turned vegetarian on her journey of nutritional healing. Dr. Alvenia secured degrees in nutrition, holds a naturopathy doctorate degree, and was highly known by the community, as well as many celebrities at the time, for her knowledge in nutrition, fasting, detoxing, dieting, and a healthy lifestyle.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “The body doesn’t belong to you, it belongs to God.” – Dr. Alvenia Fulton⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #diasporaherbs #diasporaherbsspotlight #bhm #blackhistorymonth #blackwellness #dralveniafulton #vegetarian #blackhistory #fasting #nutrition #naturopathy #detox

“You fast to create positive energy forces, which other forces can gather.” The wise Dick Gregory was not only a comedian but a human rights activist and notable civil rights icon. Mr. Gregory began his vegetarian activism in 1965 with a strong belief that “Thou Shall Not Kill” applied to man, animal, and killing of any form. Along Mr. Gregory’s journey to becoming the best version of himself, he met Dr. Alvenia Fulton who would become his mentor on his journey and introduced him to fasting. While on the pace to complete his longest fast of three weeks, Mr. Gregory had a spiritual experience in which he believed the universal powers helped heal his body and brought him closer to the true meaning of life. . . . . . #diasporaherbs #diasporaherbsspotlight #bhm #blackhistorymonth #blackwellness #dickgregory #vegetarian #blackhistory
