Sharing a little story about this Language Deprivation design: Five years ago (April 2019), I created and shared this as an infographic on my @adventuresindeafed page having no idea that it would resonate with so many. I was still teaching in the classroom at the time and was getting so frustrated with how many of my 5th/6th grade student’s IEP’s kept saying “Due to their hearing loss, they’re reading at a 2nd grade level.” Ummm... wrong! Not when not even one single person in their family knows sign to be able provide them with full access to language. I finally just got fed up and was like “It’s LANGUAGE DEPRIVATION - not hearing loss - that causes the language/reading delays.” And decided to make an infographic about this for my @adventuresindeafed page. It was just a way for me to vent about the frustrations of fighting audism in the field of deaf education. I had no idea so many would relate to it until I posted it! I didn’t have that much of a following back then and it was my first post to go “viral” - in so much that @nyledimarco came across it and tweeted my infographic over on Twitter! I didn’t have twitter at the time and so l didn’t even know that happened until one of my IG friends sent me a screen shot (as shown here) and I was honestly shocked! This design became the very first tee I offered on my @languagepriority shop which I ended up starting only a couple months after the original post was shared. The tees and stickers continue to be popular sellers nearly 5 years later! I hope it continues to be a popular seller for years to come as it’s a common misconception that needs to be recognized by the mainstream society. Cinco de Mayo—which means “the fifth of May” in Spanish—is widely celebrated in the United States. Facts: 🌵 Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexican Independence Day.That would be September 16, which is during Hispanic Heritage Month—but it’s a common misconception in the U.S. 🪖While Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with tons of food, drinks, and partying in the United States, Mexicans take a slightly different approach. Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico and is primarily celebrated in Puebla. In addition to food and drinks, locals put on a military parade with people dressed as French and Mexican soldiers, cheer on brightly colored floats, and reenact the battle on its original site. 🏜️Cinco de Mayo commemorates a powerful moment of Mexican resistance against foreign occupation: The day-long Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. 🌮 Puebla actually has a rep as a major food destination, with cuisine influenced by its position between the Gulf Coast and Mexico City. Did you know? A convent of nuns invented the reddish-brown sauce in the 1600s, and the concoction is a complex mix that includes chiles, spices, seeds, nuts, and a touch of chocolate. 🥑 Americans eat plenty of guacamole on Cinco de Mayo, avocado sales boom every year. He approached this new way of life as an adventure, beginning a series of small businesses, including running Llewellyn Galleries, in Dulwich and North Adelaide, which promoted local artists. Richard had a passion for South Australia, the arts and people with disability. The Richard Llewellyn Deaf and Disability Grants continue to support the values for which he worked and lived. This is a painting by Deaf painter Susan Dupor called FAMILY DOG The subject focused on the Deaf child being toted like a pet amongst Hearing family members who haven’t learned to communicate with their Deaf child. The Deaf child is displayed as if we can pet them and shoo them away because it’s too inconvenient to accommodate their own child If you happen to have a child with some kind of disability, they are not a burden, don’t make them be one.
