A new DEOHS study funded by our @pnashcenter asks: Are dairy workers more susceptible to allergies and asthma? The good news: dairy workers in the study had similar levels of respiratory health, including rates of asthma, as participants in the community who didn’t work on dairy farms. However, several dairy workers in the study showed signs of allergy to cows, whereas none of the community participants did. The study suggests that dairy workers and producers should be aware of allergen exposures on farms and take measures to try to prevent them. Read more at the link in our bio! The four of us enjoyed a delicious full cooked Welsh breakfast and fresh Teifi coffee cooked by Jonathan @nythyrobin book shop and vintage tea room today in nearby Llandysul. Whilst awaiting our breakfast I browsed the shelves and was delighted to come across this lovely vintage Welsh language book about Welsh craft people and had to buy it. Containing lots of local interesting information and history it is rare for us to find a book that we don’t already own. “Crefftwyr gwlad” by Geraint Jenkins. We have several books and publications by him and I shall enjoy reading this one. I couldn’t resist flicking through this book and looking at the lovely black and white pictures, this picture of renown turner William Rees ( Woodturners stand) of Nearby Henllan ( Aberbanc)selling his wares at Carmarthen market in around 1930. As Jon and I are dealers and collectors of antique Treen, this picture is a true delight and really brings a smile to our face our eyes are drawn all over the wonderful items created by him. It’s interesting too as the book notes the prices that they were sold at the time too. Pictures like this are priceless and having not seen this particular picture before it makes it even more special. Our @UNMCCRHD team partnered with the Central Plains Dairy Foundation to conduct a study and identify community welcoming and integration opportunities in three rural communities of South Dakota. Today is #MeetHICAHSMonday! Meet Dr. Maristela Rovai. She has spent significant time building trust with dairy owners and Latinx workers, which has allowed her to develop effective programming. One of her proudest accomplishments is the development of the Dairy Tool Box talks: a series of short, interactive learning sessions for dairy workers. Dr. Rovai has led the SDSU Dairy Extension program since 2014. HICAHS' small grant programs have helped her increase Extension’s resources for dairy worker health and safety. Currently, she is working on a HICAHS small grant funded project to address vaccine hesitancy among dairy workers in South Dakota. She spent time learning from communities about how they understand COVID-19, allowing her team to develop a fifteen-minute seminar that she delivers at dairies, addressing vaccine questions and hesitancy.
