What an incredible early morning upland hunt. Warm temperature, fog slowly breaking up with the rising sun, the smell of the damp forest floor, and the only sound was that of falling leaves. Tom down at 9:08 am in the sugar bush on the last day of the season! 23 1/2 lbs., 10” beard, and 1/4” spurs. It’s been a hard season, with far fewer birds than seen in previous years. The three Toms on our land would not gobble much and just kept hanging up, refusing to come within range. Started out in a ground blind with my oldest son and his best friend. Had a Tom gobbling from a few hundred yards away. After hanging up on us we tried to sneak up on him but got busted. We drove up to the top of the property and as I got out of the car I could hear a Tom gobbling in the woods to our left, and a more distant Tom off to the right. Set the decoys in a clearing, jumped in another ground blind, and made a few calls. They would both respond but not come closer. The one to the left was just over the rise, but with no cover I knew I couldn’t sneak up on him. We walked down the hill towards the other bird, calling intermittently. My plan was to make the Tom think that the hen was heading for the other bird, and it worked. We settled along the edge of an ATV trail at the base of the hill, with thick cover of young cedars. The Tom made it down to within 15 yards of us, gobbling like crazy, but just wouldn’t come around the corner. Then, to my chagrin, he started heading back up the hill! I still hadn’t seen him but knew if I didn’t follow I would lose the opportunity. Cautiously, I came around the corner but he had made it over the first rise. I let out a few yelps and he responded, no more than 40 yards away. I made my way up the slope and just as I crested it I spotted him looking down at me from the next rise. He disappeared behind it so I quickly followed, fearing I spooked him. I slowly peered over the top and spotted him hiding behind a tree 25 yards away! His head was behind the bole, giving me just enough time to get into position and raise my barrel. He stepped out from behind the tree I took the shot. Back in the turkey woods! Started off on foot this morning. Had a Tom gobbling like crazy off the roost, no more than three hundred yards away. He flew down, making his way towards me, and I towards him, calling sparingly. Got within 100 yards and settled against the back of a large maple tree. He crested the rise, a true monster of a bird, and inched his way down, in full strut. Hung up at sixty yards, gobbling every few moments, but wouldn’t come any closer. This continued for at least thirty minutes, before he turned back, disappeared over the rise, and went silent. I couldn’t follow as there is no cover to conceal my movements in the sugar bush. Tried sneaking up on him from the other side of the hill, but to no avail. That hen we roosted last night actually turned out to be a Tom, he was just too far to make out clearly at the time. We set up in our blind 150 yards from him this morning. He was gobbling like crazy but made his way in the opposite direction after flying down. Seasoned and cautious bird; wanted the hen to come to him. We tried to run and gun him, working him for a good 40 minutes, but I think he busted us because suddenly he went silent. I only got one glimpse of him on the shoulder of the road, in full strut. Spent the rest of the morning covering a lot of ground and elevation with no further sightings. Great learning experience for my boy, and more great memories made. Another awesome hunt, albeit with flies from hell. Guided another one of my friends on their first ever turkey hunt. Set up in the ground blind at 4:30 but the woods were silent. Moved to another blind at 6:00 and got four toms gobbling from three directions for a solid 30 minutes. Had two come within 40 yards from behind us but they hung up and eventually moved on. Switched to run-and-gun and immediately got a response from roughly 200 yards away. I knew exactly where the two birds were, so we advanced through the woods along an ATV trail and I called intermittently on my pot call, getting a response every time. Once we got to within 30 yards of a clearing, we crouched down and I told my buddy to raise his gun. Let out another series of yelps and the Tom came running in, fired up. Dirt nap at 7:05 am at 20 yards; 24lb, 9 1/2” beard, 1” spurs; a monster. Another hunt for the books. We set up in the ground blind at 4 am this morning as the birds were roosted between 50-80 yards from us. The Toms (there were at least 5) started gobbling like crazy. There were at least four hens with them so I tried to piss off the dominant hen to get her to bring some Toms to me. I got her, and the rest of them, fired up (clucking and yelping non-stop) but she didn’t bite. When they flew down, the hens led the Toms up the hill and away from us. I kept calling and managed to draw away a nice Tom. He got to within 50 yards, but hung up as he couldn’t see my Jake and hen decoys. Once he left we switched spots and an opportunity presented itself to shoot a bearded hen, but I let her walk. We switched to run-and-gun and I got a Tom gobbling deep in the woods. We got to within 60 yards of him but he wouldn’t come any closer. He was in a large bowl in the landscape so we couldn’t cross the ridge to get closer without being spotted. I suggested we back out and so we drove around the hill to the other side. We climbed the hill, this time coming from the opposite direction, and I only let out one call to get him interested, but also to keep him from hanging up again. He responded and slowly came our way, gobbling every few minutes. We both sat at the base of a tree and I handed my buddy my gun, as it had a camouflage barrel and 3” turkey shells. Ten minutes later the Tom appeared, moving very cautiously. He got to within 40 yards and my buddy took the shot, dropping him at 10:07 am. Now he gets to go home with both tags filled from his first-ever turkey hunt. Another awesome Québec season opener! Invited one of my buddies from work to hunt his first-ever wild turkey. We roosted two birds last night, roughly 50 meters away from our ground blind, so we snuck in at 4am to avoid getting busted, luckily with no moon to give us away. The woods were completely silent this morning; no gobbling off the roost and no response to my initial call. Then I heard them fly down at 5:25am. Five minutes later I hear movement in the woods behind our blind, and then two Jakes walk in, coming within 1.5 meters of us, straight to the decoys, but again not making a sound. They both double-team the lay-down hen and then one turns his attention to the Jake decoy. We waited until they moved apart and then pulled the trigger simultaneously at 5:36am, dropping both. Wild turkey and wood duck processed. Kept the duck whole for roasting as it has a nice thick layer of fat. For the turkey, I removed the breasts, legs, and wings, and kept the liver, heart, neck, and gizzard from both birds. A little surf n’ turf action this morning, and my first fall turkey. I’ve never seen wild turkeys around my duck hunting spot. Last Wednesday (a week ago), this super Jake was near my duck blind and let me walk to within 10 yards of him. I noticed him again yesterday afternoon while waterfowl hunting, practically in the same spot, so I figured he would be there in the morning. Bought my permit at 8:00 am, drove out, walked the field edge along the river but didn’t spot him. I settled into a hole in the bushes on the side of the field, let out a few yelps with my CWTF box call, and immediately got a response gobble from roughly 40 yards away. He then comes running through the brush to within 10 yards of me; dirt nap at 10:10 am. I tag the bird and drop it off (along with the turkey shells) at my car. Switch chokes, grab the waterfowl shells, sneak down to the river, and jump-shoot a drake woody. Day 3 hunting along the Route de la Baie James. Bagged five more grouse this morning (two male and two female spruce grouse, and a ruffed grouse), bringing me to my possession limit of fifteen. Also bringing home four ducks, each a different species. Such an incredible hunting adventure in the far north; the woods were full of game, and my buddy also got his grouse possession limit. Our project is funded in part by the New Brunswick Wildlife Trust Fund (NBWTF). In addition to funding generated from the conservation fee (added to all hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses), the NWTF receives a portion of its revenue from the purchase of Conservation plates by New Brunswick residents who are committed in supporting wildlife conservation.
