Mên-an-Tol at sunrise this morning, not far from Little Nook Glamping, the stones are said to have a fairy or piskie guardian who can make miraculous cures. In one story, a changeling baby was put through the stone in order for the mother to get the real child back. Evil piskies had changed her child, and the ancient stones were able to reverse their evil spell. Either way, I always pass backwards through the stone at least once on my way past - who knows why? I've loved the legend of Cormoran the giant since I was a kid! So here he is, standing by the castle on St Michaels Mount, laughing at little Jack for day 14 of @inktober (brief overview of the story below) 👀 Cormoran the giant built St Michael's Mount with his wife Cormelian. They quarried the granite of which the island is formed and it is said that a piece that was dropped by Cormelian is still to be seen on the causeway leading to the mount today. Cormoran was eventually killed by little Jack the Giant Killer who dug a deep pit one night and disguised it with a cover of sticks and straw...he blew his horn to wake the giant and Cormoran rushed out and fell into the pit. Jack then beheaded the big lad. The NE Piper is Cornwall’s tallest standing stone at 4.6 m (15ft), and the SW Piper is the second tallest at 4.1 m (131⁄2ft). Standing stones (of which there are over 50 in West Penwith) date from the Bronze Age and were probably contemporaneous with the Merry Maidens stone circle, and also connected to it in some way, perhaps marking a ceremonial path to the circle. There are various stories as to how the Pipers came to exist. The best known is the legend that they were two pipers who were playing the music the nearby Merry Maidens were dancing to on the Sabbath. When they saw that the dancing girls had been turned to stone for their sins the pipers made a run for it. Unfortunately for them they didn't get far and were also turned to stone by the curse. Another legend states that the stones were placed to mark the positions were two opposing chieftains stood during a battle in the 10th century. The battle was said to be between Cornish Celts lead by Howel and the Saxons lead by King Aethelstan. The Bolster Pageant- St. Agnes. The legend of evil Giant Bolster, who was thankfully killed by St Agnes (hence his funeral procession in pic(vid 8) When I read about this festival I knew we had to go along and enjoy it. The Cornish have some weird and wonderful traditions, legends and folklore- which I’m all for! Although the thick sea mist rolled in just a few minutes into the performance on the cliffs at Chapel Porth and made it quite hard to see - it did make it very atmospheric! A great vibe and an enjoyable way to spend an hour yesterday. It’s a love story as romantic – and tragic – as that of Romeo and Juliet and perfect for Valentine’s Day. In fact, the Cornish legend of Tristan and Iseult pre-dates Shakespeare’s play by 400 years. Tristan (it’s also spelt Tristram), the nephew of King Mark of Cornwall, was wounded in a fight in which he killed the brother of the Queen of Ireland. As he was expected to die, Tristan was sent out to sea in a boat without sails. By the sort of chance that only happens in legends, the boat reached the shores of Ireland, where he was nursed back to health by the beautiful Iseult (also written as Isolde and Yseult), daughter of the King of Ireland. Tristan could not stay in Ireland as he was responsible for the death of the Queen’s brother, so he returned to Cornwall. A while later King Mark sent him back to Ireland to bring back Iseult who was to be his queen. On the way back, the couple accidentally drank a love potion intended for Mark and Iseult on their wedding night. The couple fell deeply in love and carried on an illicit affair even after she married. King Mark soon became suspicious and, although Iseult managed to talk him around, Tristram left the country. He married a Breton girl, who was also called Iseult (what are the chances?) but the Queen of Cornwall was still his true love. When Tristan was wounded in battle, he sent for Iseult (the Cornish one) to heal his wounds and asked that a white sail be flown from the ship if she was on board when it returned. Tristan’s jealous wife told him that the returning ship flew only a black sail and he died of grief. There’s nothing worse than a woman scorned. When Iseult heard of his death, she died of a broken heart. A cross at ancient Iron Age settlement Castle Dore, near Fowey, is said to mark the grave of Tristan. The first mention of the romance was Sir Tristrem, written around 1300, which is thought to have influenced the later Arthurian legend of Lancelot and Guinevere. It has also been recorded that Tristan was a Knight of the Round Table and took part in the quest for the Holy Grail.

Have you ever been to Roche Rock? 🪨👻 We are coming into spooky season, so I’ve been coming up with some day out ideas to keep myself entertained - and then I remembered this spooky spectacle! Looming 20 metres tall above the moors near St Austell, Roche Rock has got to be one of the creepiest spots in Cornwall 👻 St Michaels Chapel is built into the jagged top of the granite outcrop, and looks as though it’s grown out of the rock or been slowly eroded into existence by the wind. The history books say the chapel was built in the 15th century. But legend says it’s been there since at least the 12th century, and was thought to be a cell for a hermit who was outcast by the local community, as well as the setting for the elopement of Tristan and Iseult in Cornish folklore. Some people believe that this eerie ruin is a resting place for evil spirits and demons - and having visited in the day, I certainly wouldn’t want to be there at night 😂 Have you ever visited? We haven't been posting since the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II - it didn't seem appropriate. But over the weekend we took some time out to reflect on our lives and how we go about things. King Charles III, the former Duke of Cornwall, has many strong ties with our beloved Duchy, and we know that Prince William had numerous private holidays down here unbeknown to many. The title Duke of Cornwall goes back into the mists of time, right back to Gorlois (or Cador) as his seat in Cornwall, as father of Morgan le Fay and as first husband of Ygraine, mother of King Arthur. This image was taken from one of the largest and best-preserved hillforts, Castle-an-Dinas which is steeped in the history of the Duke of Cornwall and almost before time. As many things pass, none of us are left untouched, and so in many ways things do not pass, but leave lasting impressions that make our lives all the richer for them. 7. Ding Dong Mine/ St Michael’s Mount – part 4 of 4 Ding Dong was distracted from his giant impressions by the clopping sound of two riders on horseback coming down the slip from Marazion. As they headed down the beach towards Penzance, he cooed at the sight of horses and stood mesmerised for a while, watching them meander along the shoreline that was glistening silver in the sun. Then, all of a sudden, he took off after them. Worried that the horses would not see him as he approached them from behind, I immediately followed suit – being trampled is generally a piskie’s gravest fear. But I need not have worried as, by the time he caught up with them, the riders had steered the horses into deeper water, then turned them as though to walk out of the sea and back onto the beach. The horses halted in the knee-high water at the sudden sight of Ding Dong facing them on the beach, and they looked at each other passively for a moment. My expectation of Ding Dong’s soft, horse whispering ways was sadly deluded – instead, his features hardened to a frown, he adopted the giant’s pose and bellowed at the horses with all the drama of Madron’s convincing performance the night before. Both horses were spooked by his actions, whinnying and rearing up on their hind legs. I scooped up the now giggling Ding Dong and whisked him to a safe distance before pausing to look back. One horse had taken flight down the beach towards the car park, having first ejected its young rider for an impromptu wild swimming session in the silvered sea. Ding Dong Mine/ St Michael’s Mount – part 3 of 4 The following morning, kissed by the warm glow of sunrise, our little party of piskies was stirred into a celebratory dance on the granite causeway leading to the Mount. That is, save for Ding Dong, who slept on after his restless night, and I, still holding his hand as promised. By the time he woke, the sun had shed its veil of colour and had risen high in the sky. I managed to get Ding Dong to walk along the beach a little way, but he would not venture anywhere in the direction of the piskie-adorned causeway before the incoming sparkling tide completely covered it. It worried him that it led straight to the giant’s stone heart, set within the cobbled path near the top of the Mount. ‘The heart is of stone because Cormoran is dead,’ I told him. ‘But Madron said, if you put your ear near it,’ whispered Ding Dong, ‘you can still hear the giant’s heart beating.’ ‘There’s no giant,’ I said, laughing. ‘But if there was, why, Cormoran’s no more giant than a horse. And you know how to calm a horse better than the rest of us.’ After noticing Ding Dong was awake, the other piskies came to join us and we sat in a ring on the beach full of lively chatter. Until Ding Dong stood up and, copying Madron’s giant’s stance from the night before, let forth a loud bellow at the big piskie, taking him by surprise. Everyone fell about laughing, which pleased little Ding Dong so much, it encouraged him into the giant’s character all the more. A gruesome beast who terrorised the land, Cormoran the giant made the Mount his home, stealing cattle when his tummy began to rumble. Beautiful Zennor and the legend of the 🧜♂️ 🧜♀️ 🧜♂️Zennor is a village and civil Parish here in Cornwall, The parish includes the villages of Zennor, Boswednack, Porthmeor and the hamlet of Treen.🧞 🧜♀️ Zennor lies on the north coast, about 6 miles north of Penzance. 🧜One day a local man insulted the mermaid and she cursed the town to be swallowed by the sands. 🧞♀️ Mermaids Rock, near Lamorna in the west of Cornwall is home to a mermaid. It was said she would sit combing her hair and singing, luring local fishermen to their deaths.

𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘋𝘰𝘳 A retelling of the Romance Legend of Tristan and Iseult, Castle Dor was the unfinished last novel of the British novelist Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, better known as "Q." The novel was passed on to Daphne du Maurier by his daughter. I could not tell where this transition occurs - which is both positive and negative, because I felt Du Maurier bent to Q’s style and often times simple characters, and unfleshed-out moments. For this retelling of Tristan and Iseult, the star-crossed lovers are transplanted in time to the Cornwall of the last century. A chance encounter between the Breton onion-seller, Amyot Trestane, and the newly-wed Linnet Lewarne launches their tragic story, at times taking them in the fateful footsteps of the doomed lovers of Cornish legend, and at others hinting at them as reincarnations. The immersion in the Cornish landscape was really enjoyable for me, as I grew up in Cornwall, but also because I feel like local mythology and legend is so tied to and grounded in the landscape from which it originated and was played out upon. For me, it was this element, and the overlaying of the story with the many layers of retellings from over the centuries that were the highlights of the text. They, thankfully, carry the book - as often times the characters are hollow, the dialogue stilted, and important inter-character relations glossed over (particularly that of Amyot and Linnet!). Overall I think this book makes some really interesting points about the rippling and repeating of time, and also about how legend can speak really strongly across times, and argues that Legend’s themes and plots can be seen in everyday life and that’s what makes them timeless.
