Yesterday was pretty special. Took a little drive up the coast to Albion, CA to witness a day of demonstrations by Korean master potters. Demos included how to make a moon jar the size of a person @jinwook_lee1226 , delicate teapot building @youngtaek_shin , stretching carved slabs and tiles @young.soo.kim , hollow vessel forming @empshlee , production tea bowl throwing and trimming @jaundoye , and slip inlay and carving on altered forms @kimintae79 . So much information shared by masterful craftsmen and sweet humble humans. They even sang us a beautiful song to finish out the day. Then we got burgers and beers. A huge thank you to @mikisr_ceramics for bringing these Masters to the states and to the @cidercreekcollective crew for bringing all of us clay people together for such an amazing event in such a beautiful place. Ceramic artist Nick Schwartz (b. 1975, Manhattan, NY) lives and works in Albion, CA. He grew up in a family embedded in the music industry and was surrounded by artists for much of his childhood. After discovering clay in high school, he went on to study at a small liberal arts school in Florida, where he was encouraged to travel abroad and pursue independent studies in ancient cultures and their ceramic works. After graduating from university, he traveled to Japan for an apprenticeship. In a fortuitous turn of events, he found himself working with an avant-garde artist who had shared a studio with John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg. Upon returning to the United States, Schwartz moved to Northern California and received a grant to build a community wood kiln. He founded a circus, made ceramics, baked bread, and then developed and operated Flynn Creek Pottery for over a decade. He has been invited to teach and lecture all over the world. Schwartz (@nickschwartzceramics) and his wife, artist Jessica Rae Thompson (@jrthompson.artist), founded and currently operate the Cider Creek Collective (@cidercreekcollective), an artist center for residencies, education, and community in Mendocino. I’m very excited to be exhibiting this new body of work tonight at @gualalaarts These ceramic plein air plates are a new approach to my studio practice. What first was an assignment by @mer_frederick has now turned into something new and exciting for me. I’m thrilled to get some feed back from you all :) I made these in true plein air style. Went outside and sculpted the landscape, paying attention to form. The dark colors were indentations in the clay while lighter colors were raised elements. I bisqued the plates and went back to that spot to glaze them. Again noticing the light and embracing how it changes over the 3 hour span. It’s been crazy since I got back. So busy, so many changes, and so many big pieces still dangling. So many beautiful, good and inspiring things keep happening and I am thankful for that because I feel like I’d sink really fast if they weren’t happening like this. Platter and vase from the floor of a anagama. Lots of crusty coals and ash build up again these pieces, often leaving amazing texture and cooler hues of color. I also fire my bigger pieces green-bone dry. Sometimes cuz they’re made the night before loading, other times it’s the goal to capture more carbon on the piece. As well as glazing pieces in the leather hard state has been yielding great results. Oops. One more side adventure into another medium: I’ve been working on this series of ceramic tree stumps for a number of years. They are partly inspired by ancient olive trees I saw in Agrigento, Sicily, that had twisted ancient trunks but were still leafy and productive. My thought was that with just a small weed or sprig in them, they would look like hopeful regrowth. I think I started them so long ago that it was before vast swaths of the world burned every summer. They feel all the more relevant now. They are themselves products of fire, having been fired in the anagamas at Flynn Creek and Cider Creek, which take over a week and go above cone ten (approximately 2,300 degrees). I’m still lot sure what I plan to do with them. I generally get between one and four of them out of a ten day firing process, but I am beginning to amass a small collection. It might be nice to see them shown somewhere along side other ceramics one day. I’ve also been begging to think about a way to work for a while in a place with shops for all the media I am currently enjoying, so that I can have space to experiment and work with them together. I’ve been learning Tibetan. Interestingly, the most progress I ever made was on the day I incised the letters into a clay pot. I’m sure it was something about the physical, kinetic experience, it’s familiarity and my affinity for it as a way of processing information. I just finished a 2+ week series of workshops in and around Mendocino CA. Nick Schwartz has only recently took possession of the property next to ours and in a slightly less than a year has utterly transformed the place. He restored numerous neglected structures, repaired dysfunctional water, sewage, and electric systems, and within the last month, with the help of a dedicated crew, built a new Anagama.
