A superb and large Chamberlain Worcester Platter from the Newton service c.1802. The salmon ground decorated with a radiating basket weave pattern and the border with richly gilded floral and scrollwork. The centre of the platter has a very finely painted crest of Newton. 20 inches wide. Script Chamberlain’s Worcester mark in gilt to the reverse. This service is recorded in the sales records at the Worcester Museum, where it shown that it was ordered in June/July 1802 by a Michael Newton of 29 Upper Harley Street, and the order was probably placed through Chamberlain's New Bond Street showrooms. Items from this service are illustrated in Chamberlain Worcester Porcelain, by Geoffrey Godden. A small English Porcelain basket c.1830. With gadrooned edge and entwined, gilded handle, very finely decorated with a view of Montpellier Pump Room, all reserved on a pink ground surrounding the central image. Perhaps decorated by the Doe & Rogers or Sparks decorating Studio in Worcester. The porcelain itself could be from one of a number of factories including Coalport and Grainger's Worcester. A Chamberlain's Worcester Porcelain Tureen and Cover c.1837-42. From a superb service reputedly presented by Queen Victoria to the Grand Duchess of Hesse. Very finely painted flower groups and a blue laid ground colour. The obvious sign of quality lies in the superb raised gilding, where each of the flowers and leaves is in effect modelled in slight relief. A selection of one of my favourite Chamberlain Worcester patterns. Of ‘Princess Charlotte Shape’, superbly and finely decorated in pattern 924 with a border of Roses and Pansies on a solid gold ground. Both the cup and saucer have a gadrooned edge. The cup has a very graceful handle with an Eagle or Griffin’s head inside the finger grip. The original Chamberlain Worcester pattern books describes this as 'Princess Charlottes gadroon. Rose & Hearts - ease wreath of gold, rich.' A complete service in this pattern would have been quite expensive at the time at £31 10s. 0d. It is important to note that on 25 May 1814, Messrs Chamberlain were appointed porcelain manufacturers to Princess Charlotte. This pattern was probably named in celebration of that fact. We have several of these cups in stock currently. A rare Chamberlains Worcester Porcelain Pastille Burner c.1807 – 1811. The globular bowl supported by three gilt dolphins on a triangular base, richly decorated with a vibrant orange ground and gilt netting. The bowl very finely decorated with naturalistically painted feathers. Rare mark in red script ‘Chamberlains Worcester Manufacturer to their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and Duke of Cumberland.’ In 1807 the Chamberlain firm was appointed manufacturer to the Prince of Wales and from 1811 the Prince was appointed Regent. This mark was therefore only used during the brief period of 1807 to 1811. A similar pastille burner is illustrated by Geoffrey Golden on page 272 of his book on Chamberlain Worcester where he notes 'A marked Chamberalin Worcester pastille burner, perhaps the ''Dolphin pastille, feathers £2 2s. 0d.'' as invoiced in August 1815.' #fineantiqueenglishporcelain #fineenglishporcelain #fineantiques #antiques #englishporcelain #chamberlainworcester #chamberlainsworcester #worcesterporcelain #finechina #fineporcelain #antiquing #britishporcelain #bestporcelain #fineporcelain

A pair of Chamberlain Worcester armorial dessert tureens and covers from the Admiral Sir James Yeo service, each of twin-handled semi-reeded campana form on spreading foot, painted and enriched in gilding with the crest, motto and Badge of the Order of the Bath of Admiral Sir James Yeo, the borders richly painted in an Imari palette with flowering shrubs within oval cartouches reserved on royal blue ground gilt with stylised ornament, the gently domed cover with gilded pineapple finial and gilt highlighted acanthus leaf decoration within conforming border, puce script mark to underside of each cover, ‘Chamberlains Regent China Worcester & 155 New Bond Street London, circa 1815-19, 19.8cm high One of the most important Chamberlain armorial services was made for Sir James Yeo who had ordered a full breakfast, tea and dessert service in 1815. Like his famous predecessor, Admiral Nelson, Yeo chose a pattern from stock, in this case number 298 which had a richly gilded deep blue border with panels of Japan foliage. The painting of his crest and motto on every piece cost 10s. each time, and this accounted for a far greater amount than the cost of the porcelain and border decoration. Did you like the Chamberlains Worcester dishes from this morning? This is the Spode teacup I referred to, and it is still available too. Exactly the same pattern, made in the same era but a different city by a different maker... a mystery how these two factories came to make the same pattern. Who copied whom? This wonderful teacup is available in my shop, see the link in my bio page or send me a direct message for more info 🧡🌟 . . . #gentlerattleofchina #antiqueporcelain #finebonechina #finechina #antiqueshop #englishantiques #antiquing #interiordesigner #homedecor #decoration #decor #handmade #interiorstyling #design #interiordesign #grocavailable #regencystyle #spodeporcelain #neoclassical #chamberlainsworcester #highteaparty #vintageteaparty #porcelaincup #teaservice #teacupsofinstagram #coffeecup #coffeelover #coffeelovers

SOLD - You may remember the iron red/orange coloured teacup I showed a little while ago, made by Spode. It had a beautiful Neoclassical pattern of white and gilt flowers. Today I have two serving dishes in exactly the same pattern, but made by a different factory: these were made by Chamberlains Worcester. Different factory, different city... perhaps the same artists? Did a decorator bring the pattern? Did Spode copy Chamberlains, or Chamberlains Spode? We will probably never know but I always love these finds. These gorgeous dishes are in perfect condition with just some minor rubbing, and you can find them in my shop, see the link in my bio page 🧡🌟 . . . #gentlerattleofchina #antiqueporcelain #finebonechina #finechina #antiqueshop #englishantiques #antiquing #interiordesigner #homedecor #decoration #decor #handmade #interiorstyling #design #interiordesign #regencystyle #neoclassical #chamberlainsworcester #spodeporcelain #servingdishes #dessertservice #antiqueplates #cakeplate #dinnertable #tablescape

SOLD - Not all teacups from 220 years ago were small; meet the breakfast cup! These were large cups and saucers for milky coffee or tea in the morning. They are rare, but sometimes I come across one. This one, although a bit worn, was too beautiful and exceptional to ignore, so here it is! It was made by the Chamberlains factory in Worcester in about 1805. Although not signed, we can tell from the quality of the porcelain, the decoration and the shape that it was made by Chamberlains. It is such a fantastic pattern; a combination of Japanese Imari and English imagination. The flowers are so bold and exotic, yet there is something very English about it in the way the pattern just flows freely, without much thought given to it. This is what I often find most charming about English porcelain decoration. There is a huge amount of gilt in this pattern, most of which has stood the test of time quite well; this must have been a very expensive set in its time. Except some wear it is in perfect condition and you can find it in my shop, see the link in my bio page 🌸🌼💜 . . . #gentlerattleofchina #antiqueporcelain #finebonechina #finechina #antiqueshop #englishantiques #antiquing #interiordesigner #homedecor #decoration #decor #handmade #interiorstyling #design #interiordesign #regencystyle #imari #chamberlainsworcester #chamberlainsporcelain #breakfastcup #cafeaulait#highteaparty #vintageteaparty #porcelaincup #teaservice #handpaintedflowers #teacupsofinstagram

SOLD - I showed a bright maroon red jug by Samuel Alcock recently and pointed out how the green ground was so even, something that was still very difficult to do in the early 19th century. This beautiful plate by Chamberlains Worcester was made just about 15 years earlier, and they couldn't lay such an even ground yet, as you can see from the very pale yellow ground here. But the effect is beautiful anyway - in fact, I love it when things are not quite perfect as it gives a wonderful patina. The flowers on this plate are stunning. They are all flowers that I grow in my own garden: yellow and red striped Rembrandt tulips (I just planted a lot of bulbs!), daffodils, deep blue renunuculae and that wonderful pink fuchsia. The plate has a wonderful gadrooned "Union" rim, and some raised gilding around the flower reserves, which was still quite rare in those days. And a very impressive printed mark on the back. Apart from some light wear, it is in perfect condition and you can find it in my shop, see the link in my bio page 💛🌷💛 . . . #gentlerattleofchina #antiqueporcelain #finebonechina #finechina #antiqueshop #englishantiques #antiquing #interiordesigner #homedecor #decoration #decor #handmade #interiorstyling #design #interiordesign #grocavailable #regencystyle #yellow #chamberlainsworcester #chamberlainsporcelain #rembrandttulip #tulip#dessertservice #antiqueplates #cakeplate#handpaintedflowers #dinnertable #tablescape

Good morning and happy new year! It's hard to take in that a new year is upon us again - I hear everyone say it... what happened to 2023? Let's start with a fun and intriguing piece of porcelain. This dish was made by Chamberlains Worcester in about 1795. As you can see it has a very fun "harlequin" border in no less than six different designs. Was this a pattern designed on purpose, or was this dish a sampler? We don't know. The pattern is in the style of the famous Caughley "Marquess of Donegal" service. That was an exceptionally large and expensive service ordered by the Marquess in 1793, which was decorated at the Chamberlains factory, which used to do many decorations for Caughley. That service was in harlequin style, with several matching border designs. Chamberlains later made several variations on that pattern, and this could have been a sampler to show clients the different options. There is one charming little error to the dish - have you spotted it? Being a talented porcelain painter did not necessarily mean you got to attend school for very long 😊 This beautiful dish is in perfect condition and it is available in my shop, see the link in my bio page or send me a message 💛💜💚 . . . #gentlerattleofchina #antiqueporcelain #finebonechina #finechina #antiqueshop #englishantiques #antiquing #interiordesigner #homedecor #decoration #decor #handmade #interiorstyling #design #interiordesign #grocavailable #regencystyle #servingdish #chamberlainsworcester #chamberlainsporcelain #caughleyporcelain #marquessofdonegal #dessertservice #antiqueplates #cakeplate#handpaintedflowers #dinnertable #tablescape

¡¡Feliz Navidad!! #mrspottery #mrspotteryspain #antiqueporcelain #vintageporcelain #porcelain #ceramic #ceramicart #chamberlainsworcester #englishporcelain #mesadenavidad🎄 #christmastable #christmassetting

The original Worcester factory started this pattern back in the 1770s and variations of this have since been done many times by all three Worcester factories. The word Kylin comes from the Chinese "qilin", or "kirin" in Japanese, a mythical monster that features in most East Asian cultures: a dragon-like ox/horse with antlers and a long tail. But unlike in Western culture, where monsters bring terror and disaster, the qilin is a symbol of luck, protection, prosperity, success and longevity. Seeing a qilin is a good omen and it might be a sign of fertility, so this explains why people loved eating off dishes with qilin - it was believed that just having breakfast off a dish like this might bring a new baby into the family. When the first Chinese travelled to Africa in the 15th Century they thought giraffes were qilins, and they brought some back for the Emperor, who kept them in his garden for centuries, thinking it would be auspicious for the Empire 🦒 It is thought that the Western unicorn is related to the same creature. And you can find references to it in popular culture, such as the nirik (reversely spelled kirin) in My Little Pony 🐎😂 The qilins on these dishes are fabulous creatures, painted with incredible detail and imagination. They look strange, ferocious and mischievous, with fire and vapour coming out of their big dangerous mouths. And as they are set in compartments, this pattern is known by the name of "Dragons in Compartments" among porcelain collectors. It is rare to find a whole service like this... you can find it in my shop, see the link in my bio page 🐉🐲 . . . #gentlerattleofchina #antiqueporcelain #finebonechina #finechina #antiqueshop #englishantiques #antiquing #interiordesigner #homedecor #decoration #decor #handmade #interiorstyling #design #interiordesign #dragons #kylin #monsters #chamberlainsworcester #dessertservice #antiqueplates #dinnertable #tablescape

Benjamin Oliviera was a well-known London figure in the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign.   He was a member of parliament, director of the British Institution for the Beaux- Arts and an ardent lobbyist for reducing tariffs on port wine and madeira (his cousin was João Gualberto de Oliveira, Finance Minister of Portugal).  He lived just north of the Park in a townhouse on Upper Hyde Park Street – an address gently satirized by Jane Austen as being such a short walk from the respectable districts of Mayfair and St James’s.  Mr Oliviera inherited an immense fortune from his father in 1830 and commissioned a very grand dinner service from Chamberlains of Worcester – some of which we arranged in our dining room this weekend.  Each plate is emblazoned with his coat of arms (which features multiple olive trees) and with his motto: ‘Audentior Ibo’ – lifted from Virgil’s Aeneid, and which, in the spirit of Star Trek, translates as ‘I will go more boldly’.

As a lover of very very old porcelain I was so excited to spot these 18th Century tea bowls at the car boot! These date from before teacups had handles! These came from the 2 factories that eventually joined to form Royal Worcester one of the most revered English porcelain makers.

It's National Place Card Day! I was inspired by Karen and Martin Cooper, @mrpsplacecards, to create a table setting to honor the ever-so-appropriate place card! It's true! Seeing your name in print, knowing that your hosts have thoughtfully chosen a seat at the table just for you and designed a gathering destined to bring joy; this is what it's all about. My table serves up a fantasy of beautiful pearls, silver, crystal and china in homage to my GrandTonky, who made these place cards more than 100 years ago.⁣ .⁣ #bentoextraordinarybling #nationalplacecardday #aseatatthetable #youknowwheretosit @mrpsplacecards #thejoyeconomy #placecards @suencooper @martincooper_nyc #tablescapes #tabletop #mottahedeh #chamberlainsworcester #christoflesilver #southseapearls #Tahitianpearls #Akoyapearls #keshipearls #venetianglass @maisonfeteetcie @brendaginsbergjewelry #roberthennell @fineantiqueenglishporcelain

This month my column in @Homes_Antiques is about Worcester porcelain again, but this time about the "other" factory: Chamberlains Worcester. Humphrey Chamberlain spent his young years at the famous Worcester factory, but with the arrival of John Flight he left and set up his own establishment across the road, providing the Flight & Barr factory with a huge headache in the years to come. But it wasn't just a headache. The competition between these two factories led to some of Britians best porcelain, and at times it was collaboration as well. Mix in the clever Caughley factory down the road in Shropshire, and a bit of intrigue with the infamous William Billingsley and the painters he trained, and we have a fascinating history and the most fabulous porcelain. I have a few gorgeous Chamberlains Worcester pieces for sale at the moment, from the early years to the very lavish later period; you can find them here on the Chamberlains Worcester page. You can read the whole story in the full piece in the magazine... I write a column every month, taking us on a journey through 18th and 19th Century Britain in search of the best porcelain - and the best stories. See the link in my bio page for my website with the blog and many links. . . . #gentlerattleofchina #antiqueporcelain #finebonechina #finechina #antiqueshop #englishantiques #antiquing #interiordesigner #homedecor #decoration #decor #handmade #interiorstyling #design #interiordesign #regencystyle #chamberlainsworcester #chamberlainworcester #chamberlainsporcelain #homesnadantiques #willalatham
