Stephen Bird’s exhibition ‘Industrial Sabotage’ opening today at, Rockhampton Museum of Art, Queensland. A survey of Birds ceramics from 1996 to 2016. Born in Stoke-on-Trent in central England, Stephen Bird is a painter and ceramicist whose artworks take aim at the class divide of British pottery. While the world-famous ceramic factories of his birthplace (Royal Doulton, Spode and Wedgewood) are synonymous with fine collectibles, Bird looks to a more complicated history between workers and the new ruling elite of the Industrial Revolution. North Staffordshire’s history of producing ceramics stretches back to medieval times. In addition to mass-produced goods, there remains evidence of a whole genre of freeform “end-of-day wares” that were the product of the maker’s own agency. Among the wares made for personal expression were many pieces depicting everyday life; subjects ranging from the loving to the violent including portraiture, food, boxing and other blood sports. Like his working-class artisan predecessors, Bird’s pottery isn’t intended as commodity. They are a form of resistance to an unfair power structure, in what the artist terms ‘industrial sabotage! Day 3: Commission Research. I haven’t posted much on my masks yet as frankly I never feel like they’re ready! But I’ll share the development of this one and how I like to approach the varying briefs. This commission is for a wedding anniversary gift for two lovely humans with a combined Anglo-Indian heritage. Trying to represent heritage through design can be tricky - but the main thing I aim to achieve is an essence through colour and mark-making, a gentle nod in a general direction as opposed to any literal elements. This particular commission also wants to bring in connection to a love of British church stained glass windows and any more specific links to Lahore (now Pakistan). Here are the beginnings of thought, and a potential colour palette I’m toying with. If it wasn’t for the work of @tessa_eastman, my book “Contemporary British Ceramics: Beneath the Surface” published by @thecrowoodpress probably would not exist. I wrote an article on Tessa’s work for @mansfieldceramics #ceramicartandperception and it won their writing prize! It made me want to write more and so the book happened. Chapter 11 gave me the opportunity to revisit the essay and update it in light of recent developments. Though I was happy to be able to home these two cloud bundle sculptures: “In her Cloud Bundles series, transience remains a key area of investigation. Clouds are, after all, one of the most transient entities in nature: they are in a constant state of mutation, of coming into being, and of receding into nothingness. As holders of water, clouds sustain life through their central role in the water cycle. Whilst Eastman’s clouds nod to this natural phenomenon, they are by no means literal representations. I’m parting with another favourite from the Covid series, created during the first lockdown. During that time I focused on my vases and altered vessel forms. As I love the leatherhard stage and had time, I photographed each piece in that stage as well as when they were finished. I remember this one being a particular favourite and when I poured the crawl glaze on I knew I had nailed it…so taken with it as the glaze was drying I quickly ran it upstairs and took a photo before it went into the kiln for its final firing 🔥I don’t do that very often but I’m so glad I did as now you can see how the crawl glaze looks before it is fired. Last January I received an email from someone that had been gifted a Chalice of mine that they felt didn’t go, colour wise, with their decor. They were wondering if they could exchange it and as I assumed they had received it that Xmas, I said, yes. They were pleased and said they would send me a photo of the piece and come up once things settled down a bit, Covid wise. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the photo and realized it was a piece I had sold back in 2002! I let them know that I don’t generally exchange work that was bought decades ago but as it was a piece I liked a lot I would do a swap. As I looked at the photo I could barely contain myself, there were two chalices I took out of the kiln that day back in 2002, they had been thrown on the same day, glazed one after the other and fired at the same time. It’s rare that I will get two pieces that are almost twins but that was the case with these two. I was over the moon in love with both of the pieces and decided to enter one into the Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramics Award Exhibition held in Shepparton, Australia, 2002. I still remember Heather and I studying the two chalices trying to decide which one to enter. After the exhibition the Chalice was featured in the Canadian visual arts magazine, Artichoke. There was a small write up about my work and included on the page was a quote from one of my favourite authors, Margaret Atwood. I believe it might have been the first time I was featured in an arts magazine. It was a big deal for me to have my chalice be one of 57 international entries in the show, but then to also have my piece featured in an arts magazine, alongside some writing by no other than Margret Atwood, well, that was amazing. I never exhibited the chalice again and largely kept it way from most people’s eyes, but in 2016 a collector finally convinced me to sell it to them. I never stopped missing the chalice and wished I hadn’t weakened and sold it, never in a million years did I think its twin would find its way back to me. I have scanned the magazine page for you here so you can see the chalices twin. Update-it seems it is the Australia Chalice, not the twin 😁

Making my Ballerina Dream Grotto @franz_rising_star_project #artist in residency program in August this year was a highlight for me. Incorporating slipcast pieces of the ballerina and using the frills and ruffles of the tutu to create tiny little caves and miniature grottos within the iced walls was like bringing my dreams into reality. All at once celebrating my obsession with the tiny porcelain ballerina while simultaneously suffocating her in layers of whipped up desire. I feel like a serial killer and a dream weaver all at once. And so continues my ongoing battle of attraction and repulsion. #dreamsandnightmares
