Male cecropia came to my female last night, just in time, as I got home late and had to fix up her mating house. She began laying 3-4 eggs already as I was doing it, and was worried it was too late. But when he came flying in, there was hope, and they ended up pairing sometime after I went to sleep. Was comparing the wing patterns of this male to the one I releases, and there were very noticeable differences.I read last night that cecropia’s will not mate with their siblings. #cecropiamoth #cecropia #moths #mating #nature

One of those great finds on the farm as we were cleaning up the deer fence line! This is a cecropia moth, the largest moth species in North America! Their wingspans can be as wide as 7”! During their instar stages (when they’re a caterpillar) they feed on hardwoods, so no risk to the crops. We had the pleasure of finding this one during the brief 2 week stage when they are in their moth form to breed/lay eggs before dying. Things have been very busy for me, but also exciting! I have been juggling between making new cosplays for my personal hobby, and raising these little guys! These are cecropia moth caterpillars! They are eating well, and I have had to make sure they have fresh green leaves daily, along with a nice, warm and clean container until they are moved to a bigger enclosure. They will be moving into something taller, with branches this week. I added some photos to show what they will become, around this time next year. They will overwinter in cocoons and I will try to breed some of them to help repopulate and have more little guys to take care of as well!! Here's some recent photos, (zoomed.
