It was released under Monkeywrench Records and produced by Josh Evans and Pearl Jam. The music was composed by guitarist, Mike McCready and the lyrics were written by vocalist, Eddie Vedder. A music video was also released on May 14th for the song, directed by Josh Wakely, and is about spreading climate change awareness. It features environmentalist, Greta Thunberg. A mix of animation and motion captures was used. The band can be seen stepping out of their own tarot cards and into a March. Greta Thunberg couldn't be on set for the video, due to the Covid 19 Pandemic. On this day, May 2nd 2006, Pearl Jam released their eighth studio album under J Records, issued by Sony Music. The Self-titled album (Or the Avocado album) was recorded at Studio X in Seattle, WA, between November 2004 and February 2006, and is produced by Adam Kasper and Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam went into the studio without any songs completed, the first time since their 1993 album 'Vs.', and only had guitar riffs to build upon. Eddie Vedder mentioned that he wrote around four different sets of lyrics for each song, with some going up to a set of eight drafts. The album was critically acclaimed and was believed to be a return to their earlier efforts, with up-tempo songs to start the record off, and then a switch to varying tempos. It also covered various political, social and economic issues such as George W Bush being reelected, Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq War. Eddie Vedder stated that some of the songs were inspired by the death of Johnny Ramone. The album reached Platinum certification in Australia, Canada and New Zealand, with Gold in Brazil, Portugal and the US, and Silver in the UK. On this day, April 27th 1993, Brad released their debut studio album, 'Shame' under Epic and Loosegroove records. It was recorded between the 4th and the 21st of October in 1992, at Avast recording company, in Seattle, Washington, and produced by Brad. The band formed in 1992 and had originally thought about calling themselves 'Shame', however, the name was taken, and they instead took the name Brad with their debut album being called 'Shame'. Many of the tracks were taken from Jam sessions that had taken place in the studio and was mixed by Brendan O'Brien. Brad have always been eclectic in the style of music they write, and this album began that Journey, although the band and the record at the time were classed as grunge because of them being based in Seattle, and being involved with the same circles of friends, like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden (And, of course, guitarist Stone Gossard of Brad and Pearl Jam, and Regan Hagar of Brad and Malfunkshun being other reasons), they had a funk style and more of a soft rock approach to their sound. Music videos were created for 'Buttercup' And '20th Century'. Shame would release to mixed reviews with AllMusic giving it 4 out of 5 stars, Classic Rock, giving it 7 out of 10 and Entertainment Weekly giving it a B-. Today is the release of Pearl Jam's twelfth studio album, 'Dark Matter', under Monkeywrench and Republic records. It was recorded at Shangri-La Studio in Malibu, California and is produced by Andrew Watt. Three singles have been released so far, 'Dark Matter', 'Running' and 'Wreckage'. In an interview guitarist, Mike McCready, mentioned that the recording was less time consuming due to Andrew Watt's enthusiasm. Vocalist, Eddie Vedder has stated that he believes this is the band's best work to date. 'Dark Matter', has received positive reviews and attention with Kerrang! giving it 5/5, Rolling Stone giving it 4/5 stars and Metacritic giving it 85/100. On February 13th 2024, the band announced a new album along with the title track, 'Dark Matter' as the first single, as well as the 2024 World Tour announcement. From what I've heard from the record so far, I am blown away by how thoughtful and heartfelt the songs are. I love the music, the guitars always as interesting as ever. With a Groove and delightful solos that one comes to expect as a Pearl Jam fan. The bass lines and rhythms that have a darkness to them but an upbeat funk that gets wrapped in Distortion, which gives the underlying sound so much depth. Matt Cameron's drums are the true backbone to the music, bringing in some of the complexities that Soundgarden fans know very well, but with beats that are unique enough that stand on their own. The lyrics deal with personal highs and lows from Vedder, whose words are displayed with such conviction and whose voice soars like no other. Today I went to the Dark Matter listening party ....and wow. Incredible 😍 I enjoyed every song for different reasons. For me, 'Dark Matter' is my personal favourite just because I'm drawn to heavier, upbeat rock songs, but the rest of the album had so much heart. On this day, April 4th 1994, Pearl Jam released their single 'Animal', the third from their second studio album 'Vs', under the Epic record label. It was recorded between March and May of 1993 at The Site in Nicasio, CA, and produced by Brendan O'Brien and Pearl Jam. 'Animal' was written by vocalist, Eddie Vedder and guitarist, Stone Gossard, and it originated as an instrumental demo called 'Weird A'. The meaning of the song has been interpreted many ways, however, Vedder and Gossard mentioned it was about recording, with Gossard saying 'that title (Five Against One - the original title for 'Vs', and a lyric from the song) represented a lot of struggles that you go through trying to make a record.' The single was released in the US on June 27th 1995, and was only available prior to this, as a more expensive import. 'Animal' peaked at number 7 on the Recorded Music NZ chart in New Zealand. As well as 'Vs', the song was also included on the band's compilation album 'rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991-2003)'. On this day, March 20th 1989, Mother Love Bone released their debut EP, 'Shine', under Stardog/Mercury Records. It was recorded in November of 1988 at London Bridge Studios in Seattle, WA, and produced by Mark Deamley. The cover photo was photographed by Charles Peterson. The EP showcased the band's raw and punk sound, with the exception of 'Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns'. The record did well in sales, and AllMusic gave the album 3 out of 5 stars. On this day, March 14th 2006, Pearl Jam released the single 'World Wide Suicide', the first from their self-titled, eighth studio album, under the J record label. It was recorded between 2004 and 2006 at Studio X in Seattle, WA, and produced by Adam Kasper and Pearl Jam. The song is written by frontman, Eddie Vedder, with the lyrics focusing on the war in Iraq, criticising the US government, subtly. It was a little angry, and harkened back musically to some of their earlier works. A video was released in April of 2006 and directed by Danny Clinch. It shows footage of Chilean street performer, Sebastian Gonzalez, as he is contact juggling in the dressing rooms of Pearl Jam's Chile concert. Scenes of the band performing in the studio are also included. The song topped the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart, where it stayed at number 1 for three weeks.
