I took my drawing stuff on my walk up Caerketton today. I had a couple of hours while the kids were at Easter ski camp. Storm Kathleen has brought a strong south westerly wind, ski school is on the north face of the hill so is nicely sheltered. Some small oil studies of the hills in the Pentlands - their organic shapes formed by flowing glaciers eons ago, and the lines of footpaths formed by human footprints. I’m becoming more aware of how the shapes from up in the hills are different to those from the roadside - no square fields, no man made shapes of barns or farms, just geological forms covered in beautiful textures of grasses, reeds, heathers, blueberries, and other hill plants. 2024 is the amazing centenary year for Visual Arts Scotland. From its beginnings as a charity to give women a chance to exhibit at a time they couldn’t to allowing men to exhibit and craft makers, it still sticks to the core values of helping artists. Their centenary exhibition, Then and Now: 100 Years of Visual Arts Scotland is currently on at the @natgalleriessco in the Royal Scottish Academy building until the 13th of March from 10-5 daily. Entry is free, so it’s well worth a trip in as there’s lots of different styles and sizes and genres. We talk of wilderness, yet none of it is really wilderness, especially in Scotland. When we look at the historic uses of the land, the farming, the mining, the dwellings, the hunting routes, the old trading routes or drove roads, all of it has evidence of our presence. And now with the selfie - Instagram, TikTok, Facebook - lots more places are being known about so consequently accessed and there is evidence everywhere of the human presence. This is #workinprogress of a series of paintings that incorporate a shadow of a phone photographer, the documentation of the natural landscape, the sharing and another sign of our presence within it. It was cold, really cold in that north easterly wind. But amazing to be back out in the hills, sketchbook in hand. Could only draw for a very short time before my fingers felt like they had frostbite starting. Good to immerse myself in the landscape so I can know the colours and light when I get back to the studio. My drawings don’t always represent what is there - sometimes I take the wrong colours and I have to improvise 😃 If I spend enough time out there, I get the colour and light and then I can bring it back when I’m in a much warmer studio space. 🎨🖌️🖍️ These drawings will be informing a series of hilly landscape inspired paintings based on the colours and light of winter in the landscape that we walk, cycle and run through. Getting my head back into studio mode again after the break of Christmas markets and the school holidays is a gradual process. I need space to find my painting head again. Another painting uncovered in my new year, fresh start studio reorganisation - I love those ikea picture shelves for storing finished or drying paintings. Loads better than lots of nails in the wall. I had a couple of shelves from my country living stand in November and at last got them put up while doing my new year tidy up. A summer view across the tumshie field (known as this since it had turnips in but it changes every year 🤪). A familiar view for lots of people during the covid lockdowns - local walks became much more familiar.
