A few weeks ago we helped celebrate @carclew’s Pom Pom program’s 10th birthday by building a giant cake with participants while dressed as candles. Pom Pom is an amazing space that many of us Baities have had a connection with over last 10 years. Cheers to 10 years! 🎉🎉🎉 Carclew’s flagship community arts initiative, Pom Pom, is celebrating a decade of engaging young children (up to 12 years) from the surrounding neighbourhoods, as well as their families and carers, with free art experiences. Supported by the City of Playford, the Pom Pom program is delivered on Saturdays and throughout the school holidays (11am – 3pm). Children up to 12 years old, along with their families or carers, are encouraged to explore their personal capacities and potential by taking part in art-making activities with professional artists. The Pom Pom ten year celebrations will be marked by a birthday party on Friday October 13. Four long time Pom Pom artists, Loren Orsillo, Carly Snoswell, Mitch Hearn and Jay Lord, will be engaged to lead different birthday themed workshops. These will include badge, hat and card making. Children will be encouraged to participate in all workshops and design and write a birthday message to Pom Pom. The birthday party will culminate in a performance by The Bait Fridge, a collective of visual artists and musicians who will present a multi-disciplinary musical and visual performance, followed by birthday cupcakes. Yesterday I landed back in Nashville! It is so great to be back in town and be able to attend Americana Festival and Conference! A big thank you to @carclew who helped make this happen for me to learn about the industry and network with people from all over the world. First day at @americanafest showcase and interview where she donated her own, @junecartercash and her father, @johnnycash jacket to the @countrymusichof ! It was great listening about her starting her own label to release music, her story within the industry, songwriting and of course listening about her father! I then headed to the @officialgibsongarage for a look and no disappointment there, the amount of guitars had me drooling. I particularly enjoyed looking at Greeny, and exact copy of Gary Moore’s Les Paul! After this headed to the Famous, @bluebirdcafetn where @soundsaustralia were showcasing Aussie music! Congratulations to James Bannah (@jamesbannahjr), winner of the Carclew Creative Achievement Award at the 2023 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards on Friday, 5th May. James Bannah, a young Adelaide-based musician and composer, was the first to compose an African Australian musical. He is the founder/CEO of SoundsOfAdelaide, a company that shines light on all things art and entertainment in SA. He co-founded Steelo Flow, a company full of creatives and business owners. James is working on a project with State Theatre scheduled to show in 2024. James also runs an after-school mental health program. Congratulations to all the finalists. Digital technology is providing more ways to tell stories, share ideas and make art but many artists are just beginning to connect with it. To learn more about this growing area and inspire artists to create with it, Carclew’s latest ‘Skilling Up’ event for Early Career Artists brought together a panel of digital creatives to share their practice and insights on Tuesday. The event included the artists from Carclew's 2022 digital residency as well as Edwin Kemp Attrill from Replay Creative, Dr Julia Bailey from MOD, Tung-Yen Chou (Yen) from Very Mainstream Studios and Sam Haren from Sandpit. Carclew has received funding from Arts SA for a Practice Research and Development Project with @replaycreative The project, titled "Re-imaging Space" will be informed by the question: "What will youth arts look like at Carclew's 100th Anniversary?" Specifically, the research will focus on the emerging role of the metaverse, augmented and virtual reality and engage young artists as co-researchers with Replay Creative and initial testers of these experiments. Join us for opening night of "wangga/wanggaga", the final exhibition at Carclew House curated by 2022 Sharehouse Curator in Residence Asha Southcombe. wangga/wanggaga is a solo exhibition of the work of Jayda Wilson, who is an emerging contemporary artist of Gugada, Wirangu and Thai descent living and working on stolen Kaurna Yerta. In English, Wangga (Gugada) and Wanggaga (Wirangu) translate to: language, to speak or to send a message. First seen at Carclew's unique guided experience tour "Art Lives Here", the balcony performance will be back at our 50th Birthday Party on Saturday 26 November! Featuring the same group of emerging dancers being mentored by Emerging Creative Producer Zoe Gay. Art Lives Here was a hybrid performance artwork/audio tour developed by Zoe Gay where participants got to learn about Carclew’s many rich and varied arts programs as part of SA History Fest. Small groups were led on an immersive experience of performance, art installations, film, live painting, dance and movement.
