Our project, “Closing The Loop,” confronts this issue in Tucson by decentralizing agricultural production through an innovative hybridization of the greenhouse with an identified set of urban functions - the communal, the residential, and the economical. This approach not only aims to enhance food accessibility but also mitigates the risk of further Desertification— a transformation of fertile land into desert due to adverse agricultural practices and urban development. Drawing on literature and case studies, including usda reports on food waste and food deserts, and juxtaposing The historical , we identified a pattern of racial and socioeconomic barriers that is intentionally designed to oppress. Our design strategy employs a site selection process that prioritizes areas most affected by these barriers, while carefully considering socioeconomic enhancement and accessibility to public transport to avoid gentrification. This project introduces three interconnected typologies that merge the greenhouse with urban elements to create a self-sustaining, modular system. These interventions are designed to evolve over time with community needs. The proposed envelope system symbolically reflects the challenge of desertification in Tucson, utilizing exposed soil layers to depict varied root depths of indigenous plant species and openings tailored to attract diverse pollinators, effectively facilitating seed dispersal and restoring ecological balance. Designed with thoughtful consideration for the local vernacular, the condominiums feature tiered clusters mirroring Hopi building forms, facilitating rooftop gatherings, and southern notches creating communal courtyards. Drawing inspiration from traditional Hopi construction, the exterior integrates locally sourced sandstone into thermal mass Trombe walls and courtyard facades. The incorporation of local sandstone aligns with the Hopi goal of revitalizing traditional craftsmanship,offering potential employment opportunities within the community. To establish reliable energy access in this remote context, each building is equipped with solar panels tapped into community micro-grid to ensure energy independence. Amidst the arid landscape, the site incorporates berms and swales to enhance water retention, facilitating dry farming practices that preserve traditional agricultural techniques. Designing a homeless shelter that implemented ecological knowledge principles, and social equality and inclusion. The facility has single and family units that are united with comunal kitchens. The facility has multiple programs for the local community and for tenants including laundry mat, health care, public restrooms, and a food bank. The north roof top has a garden and the south roof top has public event space including public event spaces under the building that allows potential expansion for programs or community to host events. Another thing that facility has is not only solar panels to harness solar energy but shades the rooftop and has a “flood zone” that captures water to replenish the water table in an urban environment. We love a bright and open kitchen concept, especially ones that are finished with quality materials. The dark countertops are @wearepaperstone in Gun Metal and the tile backsplash is @fireclaytile in their 6x6 French Linen, both generously donated by our vendors! Both of these materials contain a high percentage of recycled content so they make a perfect pair. Another cool thing they did was build the open shelving from wood they salvaged from the Old Main building. Just a nice little added touch of history. With themes of comfort and relaxation present, the user is encouraged into the spaces through the use of movement caused by a self-ventilating façade, and a shade structure readapting previous experimentation of the use of fabric in this building. The use of materiality aims to make the existing warehouse more thermally efficient, through heavy massing of rammed earth and an aluminum façade, both of which create passive ventilation systems, aiming to provide human thermal comfort.
