The individual figures in the web represent the stages of life, but also the four elements. Together they show the life cycle of a single creature, a long-tailed skipper butterfly. Below we see the eggs in red, the color of Fire. To the left we see a brown pupa, for Earth, then above, a chrysalis surrounded by white light, for Air, and finally, the butterfly itself, blue for Water. Close-up, each of these may seem an individual creature. And yet, within the great web of life, they are all one being.✨

Too much oppression going on in the world. We see it in nature too. We are all creatures through and through. But we can do better. We must do better. “The image on this card, the 8 of Arrows from the Brady Tarot, depicts a form of behavior from blue jays known as “mobbing.” While blue jays are a cultural symbol of happiness in many countries, mobbing shows a darker, aggressive side. Bands of jays will attack a larger bird, often a predator. The red- tailed hawk in the picture might go after a single jay, but when they come as a group the hawk sits helplessly— or rather, it believes itself helpless. The Cherokee arrows stuck more or less randomly in the branch symbolize the internal passivity and inability to act. Some may see this card as victims ganging together to fight back against an attacker. Others may see the opposite, an isolated figure bullied by a group of tormentors. Oppression shows an inner belief in your own helplessness. The first step to freedom is to recognize that weakness does not correspond to reality. The Oppression of the title of this card is primarily mental, criticism from others that in time leaves someone feeling hopeless or trapped, when in fact she or he has options and strength.”

This is the Brady Tarot by Emi Brady. It was inspired by the plants and animals of North America and it’s a unique and very beautiful tarot. It was created using a linocut process which initially involves drawing all the images on wooden blocks as reverse images. A 180-page book accompanies the deck and was written by Rachel Pollack. The suits in the Minor Arcana of this deck are represented by Feathers (Wands), Horns (Cups), Arrows (Air) and Roots (Earth). #bradytarot
7 of Roots: Growth 🌱 Long slow efforts come to fruition, and we can enjoy what we have created. A transformation in a person’s life or circumstances. This may seem sudden, but it was a long-time germinating. Possibly an experience that is short but glorious and will leave the person deeply changed. The Brady Tarot illustrates this process through the lens of this species of cicada (their genus is Magicicada—perhaps because they seem so magical?) who spend seventeen years sleeping underground as nymphs, among the “Roots.” When time comes to awaken, they emerge from the ground and shed their carapaces until at last they open their wings and take to the sky.✨

In the picture on this card from the Brady Tarot, a female Costa hummingbird tries to chase away an approaching male as she seeks to suck the juices from a flowering saguaro cactus. 2 of Arrows—Armistice A moment of calm and peace in a tense situation. This can be literally between two adversaries, or finding peace in yourself during great tension. How the people (or person) uses this moment is up to them. Will they go back to fighting, or will they build upon the “Armistice?” For an individual, will she or he go back to struggling with life, or find a way to tackle problems in a less stressful way? The imagery on this card from the Brady Tarot features two animals, carnivores of different species, a cougar and a gray wolf, each wounded by an arrow and tethered to a blindfold, nevertheless walking together in tandem. Normally, these two compete for territory and prey, yet here their ancient rivalry is set aside by common circumstance. If we think of this card in terms of a relationship (not just romantic, but family, work, etc.), as we can with all Twos, we might say that people who have been enemies find themselves bound together by a common danger, or a joint challenge. Experimenting with housing. Trying to find a sweet spot between display and capacity. Five decks about cats, isn’t that interesting? Not particularly surprising, though. I’m not even sure how many copies I have of the Haindl tarot—the first deck I really connected with and still my primary deck. It’s a powerful masterwork of trauma processing. My practice has evolved to serve as a container for my grief (sometimes my grief about cats) so a lot of the decks I work with are rooted in same. The Haunted Cat Tarot was of real service to me last week. Recently I started pinging on an entire subgenera of tarot decks made during or influenced by the pandemic. The picture on the Brady Tarot’s High Priestess card shows an Arctic snowy owl, her whiteness an adaptation to its environment, but also an emblem of both purity and mystery. She stands upon a rippling veil that hides the half moon, though we can see it subtly through the lighter portion of the veil. The High Priestess of the wilderness is not nurturing or gentle. She signifies the wisdom of life in its natural cycles.✨

This month we celebrate two milestones: Our stock of the second edition of the Brady Tarot is now officially sold out, and our P a T r E o N is officially one year old! Pictured are the full year of some of the exclusive reward offerings. These were mailed to the supporters of the Air tier, which features member-exclusive small batch limited edition mini-prints and stickers! Creating these pieces is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun! A wide variety of printing processes are being used and inspiration is coming from seemingly every direction. A true passion project/labor of love in every way, and we just love seeing the results grouped together like this💖✨ We thank those of you who have been a part of it from the beginning, those that have joined somewhere along the way, and those that will join us in the future! You are all helping the new works come to life! On another note- while the imagery for the Oracle of Deep Time is always coming along in one way or another, we are also in the process of making decisions for the 3rd Edition of the Brady Tarot! Emi Brady has a new art piece in a group show celebrating the year of the Lunar New Year of the Wood Dragon at @valkariegallery in Lakewood, CO!
