I've been doing a lot of birding this month, since we're into spring migration here in #toronto #ontario and seeing the warblers come through on their way up north is one of my favourite things to do during the year. One day while out at Tommy Thompson Park, in the Wet Woods, I saw a solitary sandpiper in one of the large puddles there! It was super exciting, since you don't normally see waterbirds in the Wet Woods; and I'm not that familiar with them in general because I don't do a lot of shoreline birding. So to help me remember the occasion and the bird better, I had to get it into my #naturejournal. I also noticed this red-winged black bird eating gnats that were stuck in a spider web, and he was eating them web and all. It made me wonder if the web provides nutrients, or if it was just the most convenient way to eat all the gnats. And if the red-winged blackbirds eat gnats in general, or if this was just because they were in the web and a convenient source of nutrition. Super cool! And it just goes to show you that even if you've seen a particular kind of bird hundreds of times, you can still learn something new about them! Here is my sketch of a Common Tern, created in about 30 minutes. While sketching, I noticed how impressive the wingspan of this beautiful bird is. The Common Tern boasts an impressive wingspan of about 80 to 95 cm, which aids them in efficient gliding and hunting over water. These terns hunt by diving into the water from the air to catch fish and other small aquatic animals. Their sharp eyesight helps them spot prey from a great distance. Common Terns are long-distance migrants, traveling from their breeding grounds in Europe and North America to wintering areas in Africa and South America. Their distinctive, shrill call is often heard along coasts and lakes, where they typically nest in colonies. These terns can live quite long; there are recorded instances of terns living over 30 years. I have been practicing bird poses. Up until recently, I would eyeball a bird to paint. I always felt annoyed because at first the bird would look good, but later I would step back and really study my paintings and realize....my birds weren't proportionate 😑..to an untrained eye it's not really noticeable. But a fellow bird artist would notice. I saw Beaks would be too large, and the body would be a tad elongated. Over the years, I've followed a lot of bird artists that really took time to study anatomy and poses, and I knew I had to do the same. I looked up some YouTube videos, and I came across some good advice. Instead of sketching a bird from a photo, watch bird videos and stop the video and sketch as you stop and start. This way, you study the birds' angles how they perch. So I highly recommend taking time for loose sketches.
