Morning folks! I wanted to show you an example of how hand poke can heal and how different peoples skin develops the darkness of the ink over time. I did this delicate little hare for Diane a couple of weeks ago, (swipe to see just finished piece) I knew from looking at this, that it would darken up over the next day or two, and that I needed to stop even though the tattoo looked very light and like it could have been worked in too. And lo and behold ( see picture 1 a week healed) had darkened up to the perfect amount and I wouldn’t have wanted anymore shading or dark coming through there. Handpoke is a delicate process and understanding different people’s skin and how it reacts and is so crucial to creating the perfect tattoo! This is also why seeing healed pictures is so important for us artists, so send them over whenever you get a chance. I was swept up in full Beltane fun last weekend @labeltane so my new flash is a little late… 🌀 Beltane is my favourite time of year, the hedgerows and trees are just brimming with life and I find myself smiling everywhere I look. Delicate little hawthorn leaf for Sophie. The hawthorn tree has numerous tales woven into them through folklore. In Celtic mythology hawthorn trees are said to bring love and protection. The leaves themselves are also said to be good for the heart, both physically and spiritually… eating some leaves while on a walk can help improve circulation and blood flow, they are also told to improve fertility. Right now the hawthorns or may tree as some people call them, are in full bloom, white and fluffy, full of joy! Keep your eyes peeled and spend some time with hawthorn. A bluebell for the lovely Sophie 🌷 I so enjoyed designing and inking this one. Bluebells are one of my favourite florals to draw, they often find themselves the focus of my paintings and drawings. Happy Monday everyone 🌺 I am feeling a little slow today. We had a beautiful weekend hosting a gaggle of @old.dotter’s family over the weekend in Cornwall. It was very busy and full of laughter, cookings, dogs, cards and the Cornish rain of course 🌧️ Now back to work this morning; back to emails, planning, logistics, organising, bookings, designing. We always have a lot of logistics to sort out. Living and working between two places 150 miles away from one another isn’t always easy. We have reasons for working and living the way we do, sometime in Bristol on the side of the road and some time in Cornwall away from the roads… but I am feeling a strong pull to find a base. Somewhere I can settle properly and grow veg and get chickens and not move every couple of weeks. I feel I need a bit of stability and structure and to keep things a bit simpler… After 3 years of van life, we want a base, but that doesn’t mean a house! We are thinking an even bigger truck. Maybe a 7.5 tonne horse lorry, maybe a showman’s wagon ( if we can find a skin to convert)… Anyway, we will hopefully be able to put some of our dreams and plans into motion soon, hard to say exactly what life will look like this time next year. But I know it’s very exciting and I’m fully focused on my work tattooing being at the forefront of it. So much thanks to Jaz, for coming a long way to get this design from my flash. Trethevy Quoit is a Neolithic burial site in Cornwall, not far from where I grew up. Locally known as the ‘Giants house’. A site full of history and folklore, surrounded by flora and fauna. Jaz studies Celtic studies at Edinburgh, which I think sounds like the coolest course! ✨ Ellen came to me with an idea she had based on Dobunni coins and Celtic pattern work. The Dobunni tribe covered large parts of Iron Age Briton, especially in the south west and wales. This being where Ellen is from and her being an archaeologist, this idea couldn’t have felt more perfect. Day 3 #marchmeetthemaker2024 ✨Evolution… Well things certainly have developed and changed over time, some things slowly and some pretty rapidly. Bringing tattooing into my practice feels like a slow yet inevitable evolution. I often felt like my work didn’t have a place in world, I didn’t fit any of the boxes… but tattooing has allowed me to express and creative all the things in my mind and now they have a ‘context’. This idea of context was always focused on at university.. ‘ where will your art be’ ‘ who will see it’ ‘ why are you making it’ it wasn’t good enough to say, because I love it. Now I think my work has ‘context’? Like my practice tattooing itself has evolved with us as humans. There are records of people having tattoos for thousands of years, so quite the contrary to common belief, it’s not a new craze or fashionable now. It’s innate in our culture and always will be. So as we evolve and change, what better way to mark these momentous moments than with something beautiful and powerful.
