I was privileged again to fish Fayette Lake yesterday with family and a friend. Five of us fishing; my daughter Crystal and husband Patrick in their boat and grandson Tyler, longtime friend Ronnie, and myself in Ronnie’s boat. Crystal works in Doha, Qatar and is home on vacation but the highlight for her this trip is that she graduates this coming Saturday with her Doctoral degree from Texas A&M University. Also Tyler graduates this Friday with his Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M as well. The weather was awesome and the fishing wasn’t too shabby either. Tyler finished with the biggest bass. Believe it or not he caught two bass that weighed exactly 4.93 lbs. each. So was it the same fish caught twice or was it twins? We will never know!! So we generally count the numbers of bass we catch (it’s a family thing) and here’s the results: Crystal and Patrick had 53 and Tyler, Ronnie, and I had 60. Yes, all together we boated 113 bass and we wrapped it all up by 11:30 AM. Patrick said he would cut my throat if I told where and what we caught them on, so no info from me (that’s also a family thing)LOL. Species 458, Hildebrand's Goby (Gobiosoma hildebrandi) This one took alot of sorting to ID, but I was eventually able to pin it down to this species based on a head lacking barbels and an enlarged set of scales beginning posterior to the midway point of the 2nd dorsal fin. I caught this guy in a tidepool near Veracruz, PA which is the westernmost extent of their tiny range. They're endemic to the Gulf of Panama. As a kid, I was always under the understanding that fishing for bass was best early and late in the day. Maybe my dad taught me that, and took me and my brother fishing then, because the 100°+ heat here in South Texas was just so much more bearable then, during the Spring, Summer and Fall. But I’ve learned that you can catch bass all day long, and middle of the day is one of the best times to catch big bass. You just have to go out and fish deeper in offshore structure in the heat of summer, at the cooler depths most of the bass are living at now. Since my dad taught me to be a bank-beater, I’m sure that was the best chance we had to catch bass was early and late, since we didn’t even know what offshore bass fishing was back then. Out on Fayette Lake yesterday for a little friendly bass fishing competition with my SIL, Patrick Gully. Turns out it wasn’t much of a competition for him. He took it to me 36 to 25. Yes, that’s 61 bass for 4.5 hours of fishing. I had a very slow start but finally got into the game and scored the big bass of the day. My bass weighed in at 6.25 lbs and Patrick had 2 twins weighing in right at the 5 lb mark. All I can say is that I got slammed again, but somehow I still feel like the winner!! Got on another great sunset bite this evening. Most fish from this trip were smaller, but I did end up with a couple of quality ones as well. Always fun getting hammered on the crankbait!
Stopped at a pond on my way from work yesterday to chuck a lipless for a little while. Once dusk hit, the fish were fired up. Most fish came on a slow retrieve. They were all eating it on the fall after ripping it upwards. But the biggest one came when I was burning the crankbait back towards me to recast. I had gotten it buried in a pile of weeds just off of a drop off & was ripping it to pop it free of the weeds when this fish ate. It felt awesome to finally get hands on a nice largemouth after the last couple weeks of catching dinks & losing every big fish I've had an opportunity at. She was safely released to go back to her normal nightly routine after a quick photoshoot.

E. emperador has been confirmed to be endemic to central Panama. Species 453, White-spotted Pufferfish (Arothron hispidus) This find was pure luck in a tide pool. This is a baby version of what this puffer can grow into, exceeding 4 lbs and 20" long. Adults of this species are nocturnal and live often at depths greater than 45 fow. I finally was able to get out and fish this month and the fishing wasn’t too bad. Caught and released 19 bass earlier this week and contributed to this nice string of crappie with my long time fishing buddy Ronnie Montgomery. 7th time is the charm🤦🏽♂️ (for dummies) After missing 6 nice fish I’d FINALLY decided it was time for a change. I started out with a slow sinking glide which got plenty of follows and strikes or should I say plenty of kisses… the fish would aggressively follow my bait 15+ feet until they got to the shoreline, where they would kiss the bait… ever so lightly; but since the lure was a slow sink, by the time the fish decided to strike they would get the side of the bait and miss the hooks completely👎🏽Sometimes with the excitement of follows and hits we get tunnel vision and don’t consider changing our strategy, but after loosing that 6th bite I snapped out of it and decided to put a slow float instead. My last follower… like all the others, followed aggressively and ended it with a kiss, but a kiss that was all hook 👏 If only I had not been so stubborn and changed my bait after that first miss 😵💫

Species 449, Little Snook (Centropomus robalito) This is the sister species to the ever sought after Swordspine Snook and an awesome random find in the Pacific mangroves. I'd end up catching 6 or 7 of these mini snook before dying of heat stroke (again). These are the world's smallest snook species, reaching a maximum size of just over 13" long, even smaller than Swordspine Snook from the Atlantic. Species 448, Sábalo Pipón (Brycon chagrensis) A very unique target, I would see schools of these fish popping on the surface, but they wouldn't hit anything that I would present to them. One of the locals advised me in Spanish that I should "come try this bait." I walk with the guy, and he cuts me a piece of Papaya. Dumbfounded, I threaded the Papaya onto my off-brand Trout magnet and was instantly rewarded with these angry, toothy fish. Apparently this entire genus feeds almost entirely on fruits and seeds that fall into rivers, hence their three rows of molar-like teeth. I'm posting this because I lost one of similar size on my last pond-hopping adventure two nights ago. I figured that looking at this one would motivate me to go back & find that fish again. I had thrown almost a half a dozen different baits at her from every possible angle & she shied away from everything, but as soon as a bluegill or small bass came near her bed, she became aggressive & chased them away. I left her alone for an hour or so & came back right after dark to give it another fifteen minutes before heading out. Finally, she inhaled an unweighted green pumpkin worm. She took off on a run parallel with the bank & then turned around. I put too much heat on her & pulled the hook before she came up to jump. This is the most fired up I've been about bass fishing since my smallie-chasing trip in September last year. I'm gonna get her.

Yesterday we had the itch for some catfish!! Caught a few on light tackle during the day, then got some after dark on the jugs!!
