Provence is popular for a reason. It’s not only because of its lavender fields but also its countless tiny pretty villages, like this one with its old stone houses, colorful shutters, central fountains and hanging baskets of flowers. You can wander around Provence for days and days coming across idyllic villages each prettier than the next. This is Buisson (population 360) in the Luberon Valley, a small wine producing, Knights Templar village dating back at least as far as the 12th century. It produces a decent Côtes du Rhône as well as olives, apricots, cherries, figs and lavender. I came across this abandoned Citroën Deux Chevaux (2CV) in a field near Monieux, Provence a number of years ago before this type of vintage car became all the rage. At that time, farmers, who were the original buyers for the 2CV were switching to more comfortable modern cars and so it was not that uncommon to find these lovely cars in poppy fields or lavender fields. Indeed my photographer friend Julien Lautier once made a living selling postcards of Deux Chevaux abandoned in various locations in the Provence landscape. It was while I was out scouting locations for a photo tour of Provence, one Saturday a few years ago, that I came across this landscape artist painting in a field of poppies “on the road to Destet” as it says in my notes. I asked if I could take his picture and he agreed and we later got talking. He said he was a maths teacher at a local Lycée and painting was his way of relaxing. The Café des 2 Moulins is named after two nearby windmills in the northern Paris area of Montmartre. If you explore the areas of Paris away from the Seine you’ll find many little “villages” with architecture unlike the rest of the city. These small areas offer their own unique vibe and are collectively known as the ‘Micro Arrondissements’ of Paris. One of the prettiest in spring and summer is Cité Florale; a small plant filled area nestled away in the 13e arrondissement of the city that literally lives up to its name as it is a small city of flowers, bushes, and greenery. Vines, wisteria and ivy trail off the side of the houses and roses spill over wrought iron railings. Stepping into this secluded pocket feels like stepping out of Paris and straight into the French countryside. This beautiful, simple entryway to a cottage is just one of the many floriferous facades to be found here. It’s May and everywhere Irises are in full bloom including in my garden. Many of you may not know that as well as being an enthusiastic gardener I am a photographer and I have another Instagram account called @europaphotogenica. I posted this garden related photo on there this morning showing the irises in Impressionist painter Claude Monet’s Garden in Giverny. As well as painting Monet was passionate about botany and was an inventive gardener who arranged his garden in this tiny village in Normandy like a piece of artwork. It used to be that the Monet Foundation would close the gardens on Mondays and allow in only painters and photographers by appointment so the gardens were almost empty. I regularly took my photo tour groups there and this particular year we lucked out with the irises which were in full bloom. While walking around I came across a thin, young painter who had red hair and a red beard who was walking up and down this allée in a very agitated manner. I asked him if I could photograph his paintings and him. He said I could photograph the paintings, but definitely not him and immediately disappeared. I am sure it was the ghost of van Gogh himself but the paintings were certainly real. I took this photo about 25 years ago on Fuji’s legendary slide film Velvia. It’s coming up to full-on rose time in the real-life impressionist masterpiece that is the northern French village of Gerberoy in the Oise. Classified among the Most Beautiful Villages in France with cobbled streets, colorful half-timbered dollhouses clad in roses and wisteria, and hollyhocks growing out of any crack in the stones, it is a real life film set. Gerberoy is nicknamed “the village of a thousand rose bushes” and in full bloom, the small town is a veritable festival of red, white, salmon, yellow, pink and violet colors. A trio of mailboxes painted with motifs of salamanders, black bulls and lavender… icons of Provence and more specifically the southern Provençal region of the Camargue. It is in these flat lands of the Rhone delta that black bulls are reared for the bloodless Course Camarguaise, a type of bullfighting specific to the Camargue which involves men, called raseteurs, trying to pull ribbons off the bull’s horns. Unlike Spanish bullfights, the men are rarely injured and the bull is never killed. The Camargue was the very first place that I visited in France way back in 1970? 71? I don’t remember exactly. More sparkling yellow fields of Rapeseed (Brassica napus subsp. napus), also known as oilseed rape, colza, or canola, this time in Warwickshire, England. Sometimes these fields are so bright in the sunshine that it’s impossible to look directly at them. This crop is cultivated mainly for its oil-rich seed, which naturally contains appreciable amounts of erucic acid. The term “canola” denotes a group of rapeseed cultivars that were bred to have very low levels of erucic acid and which are especially prized for use as cooking oil and animal food. This versatile plant is the third-largest source of vegetable oil in the world and is also an ingredient in soap and margarine, and as a lamp fuel (colza oil). The esterified form of the oil is used as a lubricant for jet engines and can be made into biodiesel. The seeds are also used as bird feed, and the seed residue after oil extraction is used for fodder. The plant can be grown as a cover crop and green manure. This is a view of Rue St Dominique in Paris’ chic 7th district. Situated on the Left Bank it runs in an arc echoing the nearby Seine, from Blvd St Germain in the east to Place Champs de Mars in the west with fine views of the Eiffel Tower the further west you go. These days it is thronged by instgrammers, tourists and food bloggers but when I took this picture in 2015 there was still space to stand on the pavement and still room for @romainparisii of @parisitour to park his blue 2CV right in front of me.. This beautiful wisteria clambers and climbs over the facade of the bistro-cafe-wine bar Aux Vieux Paris d’Arcole, located on the Ile de la Cité, near Notre Dame de Paris. It was built in 1512, during the completion of the Cathedral and was first a residence of the Canon of Notre Dame. It was sold by the Bishopric in 1723 to become a wine bar, as evidenced by the neighboring wine merchant entrance gate. It is therefore one of the oldest restaurants in Paris. The neighboring house still belongs to the Bishopric of Paris and houses the current Canon of Notre Dame, who must certainly get annoyed by the thousands of tourists each year who come to photograph this imposing wisteria. The current owners of this restaurant are called Odette and Georges and they are carrying on tradition by serving excellent food and wine at affordable prices. I have eaten here a few times and each time I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly service and delicious food. The best breakfast, in Café de Flore one of the best places in terms of tradition, history and professionalism. First opened in the 1880s its Art Deco tiled floor, mahogany furniture and red seats have little changed since WW2. The servers wear the traditional uniform of black with long white apron and go about their work with crisp and fluid efficiency. During the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s artists, philosophers and writers lingered here in clouds of cigarette smoke putting the world right and kindling their various creative juices. This is one of the places where Parisian cafe culture was born and it thrives to this day. This is a well Instagrammed facade of a tea room specializing in cream puffs!! (Yum) It can be found down a cobbled lane in the 5th district’s historic Latin Quarter just behind Shakespeare and Co. next to the oldest tree in Paris snd St Julien le Pauvre a very ancient church. The adjacent square of René Viviani was once used as a 6th Century cemetery, so we are in ancient Paris here. The building is on Rue Galande, an old Roman road that led to Lyon and Rome. Along this little street, much of which is in the busy St Michel tourist area, can be found medieval buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, numerous restaurants, cafes and bars, an arty cinema, with a small sculpture from the 14th century representing the legend of Saint-Julien l’Hospitalier in the wall above it, as well as some famous jazz clubs. Le Caveau des Oubliettes is the most well known jazz club along this street with free performances down in In the 12th-century cellar, (but you have to order a drink). The medieval building now housing Odette was a newspaper stand and food market in the early 1900s, then a “Friterie” in the 1990s selling grilled sandwiches and fries and now an upscale tea room selling “the best choux pastries in Paris”. All this in one little street. The spire of Notre Dame Cathedral, so essential to the Parisian skyline, has been restored and the scaffolding removed. Placed at the very top of the spire is a new golden rooster containing relics of Ste Genevieve, a splinter from the True Cross and a tube containing a list of all the names of the people who worked on restoring the spire. The original rooster was too damaged by the fire to be restored and will be displayed in a museum dedicated to the fire nearby. In Christianity the rooster symbolizes the return of light after the darkness and is also an emblem of France. Little by little a restored Notre Dame is being revealed… 😁.
