A fresh version of ‘PROOFING: Resistant and Ready’ opens this Saturday March 9 @carnegiemuseumofart Not a concept, rather an attitude. ‘Proofing’ explores the materials that make our built environments both defiant and indulgent, architectural tactics that turn things waterproof, soundproof, exposureproof, spillproof, tractionproof. Through a combination of architectural prototypes, video and sound, the installation depicts under-the-radar but explicitly bodily environments: spaces for physical exertion and catharsis, ready for sweat and fog and spit alike. The most fun project! Video work for the US pavilion at the Venice Biennale, under the creative direction of Xavi Aguirre @stock_a_studio. PROOFING: Resistant and Ready “Surrounding us in a site-specific installation, Xavi L. Aguirre complicates our relationship to plastic proofing materials. These materials attempt to seal us from moisture, heat, and other threatening elements, which preserve us in time. Appropriating theatrical stenographies and club cultures, Aguirre creates a space of material entanglements that exemplify how repellant architectural tactics can attract and envelope us, suggesting a collapse between protection and endangerment. Aguirre invokes tactile relationships with the built environment through physical intimacies echoed in the immersive environments. I’m still grinning from last night’s performance by the Dream House Quartet in a benefit show for The Kitchen. Pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque, along with guitarists Bryce Dessner and David Chalmin, played works by Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Steve Reich, Thom Yorke, and others. At one point, Dessner and Chalmin played Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint, one of my absolute favorite pieces of music. Famously recorded by Pat Metheny (and famously sampled in The Orb’s “Little Fluffy Clouds”), the piece was written for guitar and tape loop. Last night’s arrangement for two guitars and two prerecorded loops was unique. Dessner and Chalmin played with a combination of legato- and alternate-picking, making the piece more atmospheric. The performance had to be stopped due to a glitch with one of the loops, a moment that reminded me what I like the most about Reich’s music—though his music is rigidly structured, it still has the potential to highlight a performer’s own eccentricities. And even with a glitch, we are reminded that these pieces are fundamentally human, that imperfection can be a creative act. It was an evening of stellar moments. The Labèque sisters faced each other while playing nestled concert grand pianos. They appeared as reflections of each other, hands fluttering over their keyboards in synchronized, undulating gestures. Beforehand, the Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab took the stage, accompanied by a harpist. From my point in the loge, her beautiful voice seemed to float and expand in the air before us. And the entire show opened up with the magical Ash Fure, playing what looked like a Sol LeWitt open structure with two upward-pointing speakers that blasted staccato bursts of noise. Fure directed and reflected the noise to the auditorium by angling a piece of corrugated plexiglas. This rig was connected to a set of fluorescent tubes that blinked in time of the bursts of noise. #daad_artists International Projects 2021–2022: “Taking failure as a starting, questioning non-functional systems, making impromptu decisions, and thinking of artworks and exhibitions that consume less electricity—while still aiming for as many visitors as possible— were motivating practices for us.” This is how Solvej Helweg Ovesen, the Artistic Director of Galerie Wedding and initiator of Existing Otherwise, concluded her report on the artistic exchange project. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project had to be moved at short notice from various locations in Berlin to venues in Ghana, including the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) in Tamale, which was founded by Ibrahim Mahama (@daad_artists fellow 2017). In his first solo exhibition in Switzerland, presented at the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève from May to August 2022, Guerreiro do Divino Amor (Fellow 2021) focused on Helvetia, a nineteenth-century allegory of Swiss national identity. Around this central figure, The Miracle of Helvetia—the latest chapter of Amor’s ongoing research project Superfictional World Atlas— creates a pantheon of goddesses who embody the sacred ideals and contemporary myths associated with Switzerland. After making its debut at Berghain—Berlin’s famous techno club—in January 2020, Hive Rise was performed on two evenings in November 2021 at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Los Angeles. Created by composer Ashley Fure (Fellow 2018) and choreographer LILLETH, the immersive performance transformed the space into collective listening zones that were activated by human voices, subaudible subwoofers, architectural echoes, and psychoacoustic beats. The “ethereal” (@nytimes), “gossamer” (@newyorkermag) voice of Eliza Bagg has graced recent projects by composers @meredithmonk, #AshFure & #JohnZorn, among others. That’s her singing in the @ellenreidmusic SOUNDWALK ensemble, which will make its live concert debut during Big Ears in March. She’s also singing in the premiere of “False, We Hope,” the chamber opera by @sanferminband’s Ellis Ludwig-Leone. To top it off, her avant-pop persona Lisel @lisel.jpeg will then emerge to perform on Sunday, March 27. J'en suis pas sure mais je crois que c'est la première fois que je dessine Ashfur dans un dessin complet, en dehors de sa ref et de quelques croquis pour un storyboard (faudra que je le finisse un jour d'ailleur) J'ai voulue tester quelque chose de nouveau avec l'expression de son visage. Je voulais quelque chose qui mette en avant son coté fous dangereux, et je suis plutot satisfaite de moi, c'est a peu pres ce que j'avais en tete. Pour ceux qui ont lut les livre je doute avoir besoin d'expliquer ce que represente l'ecureuil qu'il tient du bout de sa griffe. Pour les autres, il represente le personnage de SquirrleFlight (Poil d’écureuil en français).
