The selection of artists whose work is captured in the Reflected Self Portraits is non-hierarchical, ranging from current art students and emerging artists to established and internationally recognised contemporary artists. Only one characteristic is looked for; is the reflective materiality of the artwork’s surface enough to generate a self-portrait? Any other qualities of the artwork - be they to do with status, concept, interpretation, artistic intentions or meaning – are jettisoned in the creative process. In this way, the intended artistic act could be seen to be acting parasitically, akin to a ‘mooch’, ‘sponger’ or ‘toady’ who is said to live at the expense of others. Reflected Self-Portraits is a series of self-portraits taken using the reflective surfaces of different artworks. It continues my long-running interest in creating works that draw upon, appropriate, and create new visual dialogue with existing artworks by other artists. The process has been ongoing since 2007 and has so far collected an archive of over 750 images. The photographs are simultaneously a record of myself over time and a close-up/detail of another artist’s work. Richard Pettibone is recognized as a trailblazer in #appropriationart due to his creation of scaled-down versions of significant artworks dating back to the 1960s. Well ahead of the trend in the 1980s, Pettibone adopted the practice of appropriating images, mimicking pieces by renowned artists like Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Marcel Duchamp, and Piet Mondrian. These miniatures or ”reductions,“ as Pettibone terms them, deviate from their original counterparts through their markedly smaller size and subtle alterations, such as changes in color or materials. This process blurs the lines between originality and replication, prompting inquiries into the authorship of artworks and conceptual notions, all while addressing themes like the commercialization of art, the art market, and the artist’s role in contemporary discourse.
