To my mother (an excerpt), My mother will probably never read this and I would probably never tell her all these things but she is the person I look up to the most and the biggest reason why I continue to breathe. I always wish I have the patience, faith, and strength to conquer life the way she seems to do so effortlessly. I am always in awe of her kindness and optimism despite all the hardships she faced. I know she often blames herself every time one of us breaks down. But I wish I could tell her that she doesn’t have to bear the weight of our grief as well. That she made us and moulded us into what we are today - capable enough to fight our battles and wise enough to know when to ask for help. As I write this, she is probably doing some household chore or the other. It’s a pretty laid back Sunday with May almost half gone. She is on a break from work and yet she woke up early today to go to the market to buy groceries for the whole week. Because you know, it is best to buy them in the morning. I am sure many of you would have heard this from your mothers as well if you belong to a typical working middle class Gujarati household like me. She is in the kitchen right now preparing for dinner and it suddenly hit me that she never cooks something that she likes but we all hate (a fact that was portrayed quite accurately in a recent series). It also brings home another fact that mothers do all such little things day in and day out that none of us notices and take for granted because we have been conditioned to think that this is the way it is supposed to be - that mothers are supposed to do this, keep their family above all else. Anyone living this *special* life-stage right now? Oh those were the days…. the days of stressing about leaving my little ones to go back to work, and then stressing again about letting work down every time daycare called or they woke up sick 🤒. The constant guilt…constant, constant guilt 😢 Both of our kids were little germ factories their first daycare winter, but it definitely got easier and their immune systems coped much better and they sick days dropped off dramatically (although having said that, both my kids were off primary and high school this week, so they definitely still get sick, they are just much less clingy and much easier and more independent (ie Just give them a hug, a panadol, an iPad with Netflix on it and they curl up happily in bed all day and ask you to leave their room 😉).
