The Vought V-173 had an unusual planform that led it to be dubbed “The Flying Pancake.” This experimental aircraft had a flat, disk-like shape with two 80HP Continental engines buried in the fuselage (such as it was) that drove two large propellors on the wingtips. It was made of wood and canvas and had symmetric NACA 0015 airfoil. Ordinarily, such a small aspect ratio (about 1.3), one would expect a large amount of induced drag due to tip vortices, but the propellors rotated in the opposite direction, effectively cancelling them out. For pitch control, the aircraft used all-moving stabilators. Flight testing started in 1942 in Connecticut and continued through 1947, ending after 190 flights. One person who flew it was Charles Lindbergh, who found it easy to handle and almost impossible to stall. The aircraft still exists and is at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, TX. This weekend we were incredibly happy to give back to an awesome community. The ELR community has been so good to Manners and it is one of the hardest disciplines to jump into. We wanted to create an event to let people learn and experience the thrill of ELR. We were proud to be able to partner up with Spearpoint Ranch and have them open their doors to us and provide amazing hospitality. From food to lodging to ranges. We had the idea to put some prizes on the table with 2 ELR stocks but then other companies reached out to support BIG! @hornadymfg sent everyone a box of their chosen A-Tip bullets along with Sun shirts for all! Wow! @gaprecision sent some sweet Kuiu swag out! @ryancheneyelr sent an airfoil bag to give away! So awesome to see people come together to give to new ELR shooters. • We were thrilled to have 4 instructors there: Tom Manners himself came out and worked to make this event huge. Team shooter Shane and Jaclyn Bryan along with Robert Brantley worked to get shooters prepared for competition, helped them gather data, and coach them on the clock in an ELR environment. This NASA 010-64 Helicopter rotorcraft airfoil model was manufactured and tested in the 1970’s at the 6x19” Transonic Tunnel located at the NASA Langley Research Facility in Virginia. It is beautifully crafted and in excellent condition. Included is wooden storage case with a bottom level where as a spare airfoil can be stored. It has 42 Pressure Taps, 21 on top and 21 on the bottom for measuring laminar airflow. Overall length is 14” including tubing. Al ser un avión fabricado completamente en madera de balsa, es susceptible a las termitas. Desgraciadamente el ala fue atacada durante su fabricación. Esto retrasó mucho su finalización. Esta imagen muestra el segmento dañado que se reemplazó por otro construido de balsa sobrante. (06/02/24) 3. Los únicos CA 20 hasta la fecha. A la izquierda el CA 20 V-1, basado en los planos del "Elipsa". (19/02/24) 4. El segmento de balsa a partir del cual se fabricó la aeronave. Abajo el fuselaje en bruto. Ya se observan dos respiraderos carcomidos por los insectos en el ala. (26/07/23) 5. Tercer vuelo realizado el 19 de febrero. 6. Quinto vuelo realizado el 19 de febrero. Airplane wings are designed to have a cross section that looks somewhat like the shape of an elongated teardrop (second pic). Engineers have a name for it - Airfoil. Airfoils can generate lift when they are immersed in an airflow at an appropriate angle. Although the mathematical explanation of lift is non-controversial the physical explanation of how airfoils generate lift is a bone of contention. You will hear one of the two explanations depending on who you talk to: explanation using Newton’s third law and an argument from Bernoulli’s principle. Each of these is a correct description but not complete on its own. Explanation using Newton’s third law or “action-reaction” principle goes like this. When placed in a stream of moving air the airfoil pushes down on the air mass, deflecting it downward (action). As a reaction, the air pushes up on the airfoil, generating lift (third pic). Alternatively, Bernoulli’s principle explains how the airfoil physically interacts with the air to generate a net upward lifting force through the concept of pressure (fourth pic). Due to the curved shape of the airfoil the air moving over the top is faster than the air moving over the bottom. Bernoulli’s principle states that the pressure falls as the air speeds up along the flow and vice versa. In fact, the pressure over the top surface drops below the ambient or surrounding “undisturbed” air pressure. The pressure over the bottom surface generally rises above the ambient. Consequently, the higher pressure over the bottom and the lower pressure over the top of the airfoil results in a net upward pressure that manifests as lift. Fun fact: the misty cloud above the wings in the first picture is due to the existence of low pressure that causes the humid air to condense and become visible.
