December 4th, 2022 was a day @missuselives and I decided to take a trip to Spruce Knob to enjoy the warm lighting of a sunset from West Virginia’s highest point. We arrived at around 5:00 p.m. and enjoyed a unique sharp lighting over the rolling hillside with Spruce Knob’s iconic boulders. While there was no snow, the sharp wind was very cold. On October 9th, 2022, @missuselives and I went with @josie890711 and @km61090 to Spruce Knob. We had good colors on the leaves while we visited Hot Springs, VA so I expected Spruce Knob to have the same levels of tree color. Not only did it deliver good colors, but the area also had the clearest sky and the lowest humidity. On January 29th, 2022, @missuselives and I had plans of trudging through the snow to visit Spruce Knob but the snow was a bit too much for my un-modified, factory-produced Jeep Wrangler with no attached wench. We made it to this bridge and I was uncomfortable with the amount of slippage and getting stuck in the snow. We decided to turn around and try another location. One bittersweet thing about the well-known locations in West Virginia, or anywhere, really, is that every photo has been done already by someone with far better skills and someone else with much better equipment. Spruce Knob is no exception. One of my goals in my photography is to catch shots which would work well as conversation starter. Storytelling is my main goal in every photo I take. On October 10th, 2021, @missuselives and I took a day-trip with our Anniversary in mind. We went to West Virginia’s highest point with hopes of seeing the glowing golden hills. The fog had other plans. There was a cloud resting right on the flat top of Spruce Knob. We watched as this cloud passed over and I caught shots of the boulders mysteriously resting in the murky view. When the fog broke and let us see through, I caught some shots of the mountain’s view. When we went down the other side of the mountain, the fog cleared immediately and we could see the lake. I was excited to show the status of the leaves and show the sunlight over Elizabeth. Miss looking out at the sea of green flowing over the mountains, and it getting dark at 9pm a little extra lately.
At the end of October 2019, my good friend, @km61090 called us up and offered for us to join her on a weekend adventure. Kelsey was rethinking her job and wanted a chance to go out and catch the sunrise from the crest of Seneca Rocks after exploring a cave and stargazing at West Virginia’s highest point. She invited me and @missuselives to come with her and enjoy that weekend. By November 2nd, 2019, after we explored the cave, Elizabeth and I went with Kelsey to Spruce Knob. It is well-known as West Virginia’s highest point, but Spruce Knob is also one of the least light-polluted areas on the Eastern side of the United States. We brought some glowsticks and made light trails. We would have lasted a little longer had we not heard bear hounds. We started walking back to the cars when I saw steaming bait entrails. We heard the bears nearby, but didn’t want to give them any chances. On October 5th, 2019, @missuselives and I took a random drive and ended up on Spruce Knob for the sunset. We worried as we drove up the mountain that we may not have made it in time to see the sunset, but we got there at about 6:48 pm. The sun passed the horizon at about 7:00. I'm not sure which works better - #spruceknobsaturday or #sunsetsaturday? I took this photo in early October from the road leading up to Spruce Knob, the highest point in WV. We somehow managed to time it correctly to watch the sunset (which never seems to happen) however that meant driving the remaining 30 minutes to the campsite on a very potholes road in the dark. ⛰ Tallest point # 🖐 •Spruce Knob Mountain- WV This hike was both thoroughly enjoyable and horrid. 🤣 Within the first mile we had soaked feet from wading through rising water, sloshing through ankle deep marsh, we got stung repeatedly by some weird plant due to immense overgrowth, and our arms and legs were being constantly assaulted by branches. Not gonna lie, I started with a bad attitude and I wanted to turn around but since we came to do the thing, (and I don’t quit 💪) we pressed on hoping for better terrain. Though the trail was mostly water logged due to a “really bad storm” the night before, had tons of rocky passages and lots of roots to traverse, the last 4 miles up were a lot of fun. Needless to say we took the road back down which was about 2 miles longer but we found some awesome wildflowers and wild blackberries along the way! **Please note Ted’s request for relaxing 😂 ** 6/30/19
