The Department of Photography and Film is pleased to share an update from 2018 Photo + Film MFA alumni, Johannes Barfield! Now residing in Albuquerque, as a Postdoctoral Scholar, he will be transitioning to a tenure-track assistant professor in the Honors College Department at the University of New Mexico this Fall!, What an incredible journey Johannes has had to where he is now! 🤩👏 📌 Johannes Barfield is an interdisciplinary sample-based visual and sound artist who works in installation, video, photography, extended reality (XR), collage, sound, and music. His work explores childhood memories, joy, and appropriation as a means for survival, the restitution of artifacts, extinction, and the music played at family cookouts. He is currently working on a graphic novel and video game titled “Pilot Coaltrain’’ in collaboration with illustrator and concept artist, Daniela Gamba (@danielagamba.art) ➡️ Swipe to check out some of the first looks at this project! This is me! I make art on most days and post my illustrations on IG as often as I can. In my stories I like to add snippets of my artist and art teacher life. I only started using Procreate in the beginning of 2024 and continue expanding my abilities as an artist. I love the learning process! I intend to make and share illustration art in a variety of mediums beyond digital because I studied so many different processes. I hope you will enjoy some of the content I have to share. This week, our seniors are scrambling to install their BFA capstone exhibitions, and only 5 years ago, alumnus, Adam DuBrueler, was right there with them! Since then, Adam has made tremendous strides in his career from graduating from VCU’s Brandcenter (@vcu_brandcenter) to becoming an art director at @anomaly where he creates Super Bowl commercials! Peter Cochrane, a VCU MFA P+F alumni and a professor for the photo senior thesis section, has been included in multiple different exhibitions! 👏 Peter Cochrane (b. San Diego, CA) depicts stories of resilience and metamorphosis through the lenses of horticulture, art history, science fiction, and autobiography. Working in materials ranging from the 8 x 10 film camera to digital imaging and experimental darkroom photographic techniques, he builds elaborate narrative set pieces that explore fundamental questions of human existence and cosmic time. The Magician Longs To See is a solo exhibition located in The Athenaeum in La Jolla, California! Being born and raised in San Diego, Cochrane considers this a home coming, and portrays the idea of the natural world and humanity. Nadiya I. Nacorda is a VCU BFA alumni who received her MFA in Art Photography at Syracuse University. 👏 She’s been included as a featured panelist in the @photoville MFON Global Symposium! Nadiya also has joined the P+F faculty as a visiting assistant professor in photography! 🎉 Nadiya I. Nacorda is an artist, educator and Taurus working with photography, video, and sound. Her work explores the nuances and entanglements of inheritance(s) while considering themes of magic, affection, identity, and (other)mothering; along with Blasian feminine interiority and subjectivity. In her practice, she looks to the collective ancestral memories and stories passed on through, and between, the generations of her Xhosa and Philippine family while exploring broader histories of colonization and displacement. Her work has been exhibited at Filter Photo in Chicago, Silver Eye Center for Photography in Pittsburgh, Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, The Phoenix Art Museum, Center for Book Arts in New York City, Photo Vogue Festival in Milan, Candela Books and Gallery, and Afrikana Film Festival, among others. A standing ovation for VCUarts P+F alumni Evie Metz and Luke Mancari for their films being included in the James River Short Film Showcase! Congratulations to Evie Metz for winning first place in the showcase! 🎉🥇 “Judy’s Garden” is a puppet stop-motion animation that was created, animated, and directed by Evie Metz! She collaborated with Nick Daly, who helped co-write and score the film. The film follows a gardener who is confronted by death and taken on a journey through her past. Inspired by the experimental documentary, ‘Sans Soleil’ by Chris Maker. ‘Mix-Cycled Memories’ by Luke Mancari, similarly creates a mediation on the nature of memory. By using both his own and familial archive, moments reinterpret and connect themselves through sight and sound. As I find them, I will be sharing some photos of old sculptures I made. My dates could be totally wrong, but I think this was around 2005/06 while I was studying Art Education at VCU. I took the opportunity to take as many studio classes as I could. 3-D work had always intimidated me. It just didn't click with me. This was from my first (only) sculpture class, taught by @claire._.watkins It remains my favorite class I've ever taken. Claire's way of teaching was so alive and open-ended. Her kinetic sculptures fascinated me and she shared so many avenues to explore within the 3-dimensional/installation world. I experimented with so many different materials and techniques; I made so many works that I don't have any photos of😢 Unfortunately, I don't think I took any photos of this wax sculpture until after it started falling apart. I still love it though. I had a friend help cast the front of my body, and poured layers of wax (from candles I had and other craft-store wax) to build up the human form. I also made molds of Alaskan crab legs and added these legs to the back. If I were to make this again, I would try to cast around the back and integrate the legs more fluidly. I would also add in dowels or some other form of support so the layers (breasts) wouldn't just slide right off. Oh, how I wish my real ones would now🫠 I made this in the living room/kitchen of an old apartment in Richmond. VCUarts Theatre alum Curt Miller (BFA '16) sent us some incredible behind-the-scenes photos from working as Head Sound on the Broadway hit “& Juliet” @andjulietbway 💥🎧🎙️ Curt's @livingtoast previous work includes positions on Broadway's “Diana: The Musical,” National Tours such as “Jersey Boys” and “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical,” multiple Met Galas, Shakespeare in the Park and more. @jasminelthompson Back again continuing from yesterday ✨ Fast forward, after spending some time working and living on boats in California, I packed a backpack and got on a plane to Australia. I loved it so much I extended my stay to three years and worked as a scuba diver, deckhand, and stewardess in tourism and research. I love all things that light up. One of the most beautiful things on the whole planet to me is bioluminescence. This is when living organisms create their own light using a chemical reaction. Fireflies, mushrooms, glow worms, marine plankton, and various deep sea creatures are examples of organisms that can have species that are bioluminescent. My next adventure would be contributing at an organization called @ipbio_reservabetary in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil to help with an ongoing project on bioluminescent mushrooms. Here, I would also take out a blacklight / UV light at night and find various types of fluorescence in nature. Scorpions, plants, rocks, crabs, and various sea creatures and corals can show fluorescence in the dark when a UV light is shining on them. I also helped with a lot of data collection on parasitic fungus called cordyceps, or entomopathogenic fungus. This is when insects are infected by a fungus that uses them as a host, killing them and using their body as nutrients to grow. Nature is wild! Hello Everyone ! This is Jasmine Thompson @jasminelthompson - 2014 Photography and Film Alumni. I’m very excited to be taking over for the next few days and reviewing some of my work from over the past (almost) decade. 🤯 I’m currently enrolled in the University of Oklahoma’s OU online program doing an M.A. in Art and Technology. I have always loved portrait photography and lighting design within portraits. I was very moved by the way light was absorbed and reflected in different skin tones. After graduating, I relocated to Los Angeles where I tried a bunch of new things, and life took a turn when I got an opportunity to work as a dishwasher on a liveaboard scuba diving boat on the coast of California. It was all completely new from anything I had done before, and not where I thought my path was leading, but I did it anyway. I fell in love with boats, scuba diving, the ocean, and living at sea. My goals from then on would be how to bring my background and intertwine it with my evolving love of natural sciences. BLANKETS, a solo exhibition from Lydia Mutone is on view on the first floor of the Anderson until 9/22 with a reception 5–7pm Fri. 9/15! 🏵️ . Lydia Mutone’s practice centers on figures within intimate settings. She employs abstraction by pushing images back and forth within a digital editing realm and funneling the compilation into oil paint. Mutone works to mediate her opaque geometric paint application with the overall impact of translucent layered fluidity. This obfuscation of her digital touch plays with legibility and allows the viewer to piece together the composition. Duplications of a single subject are in motion, yet housed in a stagnant space. In these dramatic interactions, limbs are revealed and concealed as the figures stumble over each other to take the foreground. 💫 . Mutone’s work uses the bedroom as a vehicle for fostering intimacy between the viewer and the muse. It relies on a close connection with the subject and serves as a collaboration and exploration of their relationship. 🌷 . Lydia Mutone is a Richmond-based artist and @vcuarts alumni (BFA 2021, Communication Arts major, Painting & Printmaking minor). Mutone’s work has been exhibited at 1708 Gallery, Field, ADA Gallery, and the Anderson Gallery. Mutone is currently a resident at the Visual Arts Center (Richmond, VA). Frames by Bryan Parnham Opening this Friday, September 1 from 5-7pm! #repost @bryanparnham Some words for my show ‘Frames’ at @dransfieldjewelers September 1st Frames These nine objects are simultaneously (in no order of value) jewelry, photographs and paintings. The factors that signify them as one of the aforementioned also deny them as another. As jewelry they are small and wearable but their form and frames follow the conventions of painting. As photographs they emulate pictorial reality but are blurred and painted over. Being painted, they meet the minimum requirement to be paintings (Though their size, material construction and predominant photographic aspect are sufficient to keep them from functioning in this category). Hey 👋🏼, Dominique Muñoz @domo23 here again! 🪄 In 2021 I signed up for a virtual 5-week photography course on world-building with @silvereyecenter (taught by @aleemhurst & @j__houston) This motivated me to get back into my art practice and create new images. My current exploration of photographs is grounded in environments reminiscent of my childhood memories, supercharged with imagination. Places that fissure reality, allowing the spirituality of my ancestors to trickle through. With the use of artificial lights and color, I create imaginative environments, revealing the magical undercurrents of our world. The spiritual power of nature is foregrounded. Throughout my 2 years @unc_aah interdisciplinary MFA program, I aim to continue collaborating and making art with my family. For my show at The National Building Museum @nationalbuildingmuseum , I was researching framers in the D.C. area and that’s when I came across @framebridge In 2018, I began working on Framebridge's small creative team. I wanted to enhance my artificial lighting skills for personal projects and felt like this would be a great place to learn. When I joined they were rebranding, working on opening storefronts, and launching many national campaigns such as National Geographic’s @natgeo first print shop. I took on many responsibilities such as set design, image sourcing for product orders, and project managing photoshoots. I learned a ton about framing my artwork and gained greater confidence in blending artificial lighting techniques within my artistic work. These are a few highlights from my time developing Framebridge's visual brand identity. 👋🏼Hey everyone! This is Dominique Muñoz @domo23 2015 P+F Alum! I'll be doing a takeover this week. I recently was accepted into @uncchapelhill @unc_aah MFA program in studio art as a merit fellow and I'd love to take you through my journey getting here. After graduating from VCUarts, I served as the inaugural resident photographer at Clark Construction @clarkbuilds in 2016. I traveled around the country for over a year, documenting the art of building, highlighting the collectivism involved in construction. Observing the rituals of the workers was enchanting; how they personalize their hard hats and dance with each other hundreds of feet in the sky. This residency allowed me to freely roam around construction sites, meeting many talented craftspeople who taught me new facts about their trade. Hi everyone, it’s Sam Lo @sam_g_lo again! In 2019, I received VCU’s Dean’s International Research Grant and traveled with my father to his birthplace, Hong Kong. We visited numerous sites relevant to his family and childhood history. This series is titled, The Things We Remember. All throughout my life I had heard stories about my father’s life in Hong Kong. Whenever a story was repeated, new details would be revealed, while simultaneously others would be forgotten or misremembered. There were no photos of the people and places in these memories, and I had yet to see these spaces for myself. Myths emerged as amalgamations of the truth, the hidden, the distorted, and the forgotten. Experiencing these spaces in-person with my father was invaluable to understanding my father and I’s identities. We visited his private high school sanctuary that offered him brief respite from poverty, and endured the odor of sewage in the alleyway behind his former home where he and his father would climb through windows high above the street to work on plumbing. Being physically present in these spaces — seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting, and touching them allowed me to become a part of their physical history. During this journey, I gained insight and fulfillment of understanding my father and I’s shared histories with Hong Kong. This desire and the need for one to be present in and become a part of the specific places of their origins is something that not only impacts my personal life, but also informs my work on identity. Howzit, everybody! This is Sam Lo @sam_g_lo I’ll be sharing some of my work as a P+F alum and incoming MFA candidate in an interdisciplinary 3-year graduate program. As I prepare to enter graduate school, I am excited to explore and engage with the complex aspects of multicultural and multiracial identities. My book, MIXED, serves as a starting point for many of the ideas I will be developing and refining in grad school. MIXED is an intimate exploration of how I perceive myself as a multiracial person. Conflicted feelings of being in a liminal space between races, ethnicities, and cultures are expressed through self-portraits, cultural signifiers, and allusions. Scans and collages were used to assemble several of the images in this book, both referencing the structure of the book itself and disrupting the expectation of conventional presentation. I look forward to further experimenting with the potential of using these interventions to reflect the unconventionality of the multiracial experience.
