This Memorial Day weekend as you prepare to hit the gym to take on a memorial workout for fallen heros, consider doing the Memorial WOD for Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman. John Allan Chapman (July 14, 1965 – March 4, 2002) was a combat controller in the United States Air Force who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on August 22, 2018, for his actions in the Battle of Takur Ghar during the War in Afghanistan. During the battle, he exposed himself in the open twice on two different fortified positions through knee-deep snow to kill enemy fighters that pinned down his team. His actions saved the lives of his Navy SEAL team, and the quick reaction force of Air Force Pararescuemen, one Combat Controller, one TACP, and an Army Ranger platoon. He is the first airman to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War. His fight was the first recorded Medal of Honor captured on video and can been found on YouTube. He was inducted into the Hall of Heroes on August 23, 2018, and posthumously promoted to Master Sergeant on the following day. Air Force Special Warfare hopeful, @b.heeb , did 70.3 Ironman this past weekend. Huge shoutout to our fellow NorCal Bad Boy for leading from the front, and being the example for others to follow. The event consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile run. It’s not an easy feat, especially when you’re putting out a competitive time. Air Force Special Warfare Training Day • Reno, Nevada • May 14, 2024 🏃♂️🏔️🎰 The day consisted of a range of motion warm up, followed by 3 rounds of 200m runs, 5xinchworm push ups, 12xsingle arm ammo can high pulls, and 15xwide arm push ups. Following the warm up, it was 4 rounds of 10xBurpee to double ammo can sumo deadlift high pulls, 15xAmmo can bent over rows, and a 50m ammo can bear crawl. Next, we conducted 6 minutes of a maximum effort of reps of burpees. We finished the day off with a 5 mile run up to the “N”. Our Reno crew showed up and showed out. Air Force Special Warfare Airmen are required to be the best airmen that fight on to the objective with global access, precision strike, and personnel recovery. Throwing it back to the Afghan summer of 2013🚁📞💥 This photo was taken during a sling load operation on FOB Frontenac while I was assigned as a TACP to 2-3 Field Artillery Battalion of the 1st Armored Division. I had just turned 21 years old, and as a TACP ROMAD I was tasked to maintain and operate TACP communication equipment, soak up all of the knowledge from the more experienced TACPs, and assist with airspace and aircraft coordination in our battalion’s area of operation. In my time on FOB Frontenac, I was able to control aircraft for two different clearing operations in the Arghandab Valley. During these operations, we were able to successfully keep the American and Afghan platoons on the ground safe with air support. This is the job of the TACP. Protect friendly and allied forces on the ground, and provide precision strike to ground forces that need us in a fight. We settle for nothing less than excellence, and Special Warfare Airman are expected to move farther, faster, and fight harder than any other Airman. Physical fitness is a baseline. We are required to be able to get in and out of any mission objective carrying a full load of combat equipment through any terrain and distance. SWCC builds a physical baseline and knowledge of health and wellness to our recruits, but it is also a high physical demand with lots of time in the pool, lots of miles on the feet with running and rucking, and a great deal of strength and conditioning. But physical fitness is just 1/8 of what is needed to operate. Once at the “X”, we are expected to complete the mission using the highest levels of drive, problem-solving, teamwork, stress tolerance, and communication. You can be physically fit, but if you aren’t a team player, don’t have integrity and aren’t coachable, this career path is not for you. Air Force Special Warfare classes begin basic training with the best 150 hopefuls across the country, and after SWCC, they have dropped to 68 recruits before they head out to Assessment & Selection and the TACP Schoolhouse. #ICYMI A TACP element leader with the 22nd Special Tactics Squadron, received a Purple Heart medal at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, March 26, 2024. 🎖️ The element leader was struck by an explosion initiated by a UAS on March 24, 2023, during the last week of a deployment in an austere location in Syria. 🚨 SHIPPER ALERT 🚨 This week I had the honor of shipping off three individuals to Basic Military Training who have all evolved throughout their time in development. James Young (2nd Picture) carried himself through the development with a great attitude and the drive to succeed. He was an example for all of his brother’s in the DEP and was dedicated to the lifestyle that called to him. Austin Robinett (3rd Picture) had a work ethic that was unmatched and never backed down from a challenge. He understood the meaning of being part of a TEAM and lifting up those around him when we tried to make everyone quit. Isaiah Ortega (4th Picture) came back from a year of developing himself and breaking past any and all obstacles in his way. Throughout that year he stayed hungry, determined, and committed to joining Air Force Special Warfare. Now he’s off to be part of the elite and more than ready to get the job done. Air Force TACP SSgt Diante Cooper represented the Air Force and the Special Warfare community today at the USA Wrestling Olympic Trials, winning his opening match, and advancing to the Challenger Semifinals. 🤼♂️✈️🇺🇸 Diante is an active duty airman stationed in Vilseck, Germany. Growing up a stellar athlete and wrestler, he decided to serve his country and strive to be one of the best as a TACP Airman. After graduating the rigorous TACP training pipeline and winning the All Army Combatives tournament, he was selected to represent the Air Force’s World Class Athlete Program, and spent two years of his career reporting to wrestle every day at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He has since returned to his duties as a Special Warfare Airman, but that hasn’t stopped him from competing and being one of the best 97kg Greco-Roman wrestlers in the United States. Lacerda Cup All Army Combatives Tournament 2024 🤼♂️💥 I did not get the victory that I set out for, but I fought with all I had. After receiving a first round bye into the Round of 16, my fight results were: Round of 16-Loss 0-2 to Fort Moore, Georgia Consolation Round of 20-Win 13-0 to Vicenza, Italy Consolation Round of 12-Win 12-2 to Ohio National Guard Consolation Quarterfinals-Loss via Kneebar to Fort Liberty, North Carolina I lost some tough fights in a stacked 155lb bracket. I was taken down and lost 0-2 in the last second of my first fight to a guy that took 2nd place in the tournament. I beat the runner-up from the 2022 Lacerda Cup in my 3rd fight, and I lost my last fight to last year’s defending champion who ended up taking 3rd in this year’s tournament. It is not the result that I wanted, but it’s great to know that I can compete with the Army’s best. I’m grateful to all of my teammates who helped prep me over the last few months, my coworkers that have allowed me the time to train hard, all of my friends who reached out with the great support, Fort Irwin Combatives for allowing an Air Force guy to tryout and compete with their team, and my good friend @zapa23 who came out to come coach and be in my corner for such a big event.
