Had great fun volunteering at the Snowking XXIX (that’s right, the 29th annual!) Festival on Great Slave Lake during the month of March—the skies in Yellowknife were brilliant blue, the northern lights danced above the ice castle most nights, and temperatures ranged from 5 °C to -37 °C. I met a great group of committed volunteers and spoke with visitors from Mexico, the USA, the UK, Estonia, Japan, and from all across Canada. I encouraged parents, grandparents, and teachers alike to follow their kids down the ice slides, watching them hurtle down the track hurtling—feet first and face first… I also attended a ‘cool’ evening concert in the ice theatre. Mo Kenney concert inside the snow castle as part of the Snowking’s Winter Festival. They were part of a music residency program for the annual Folk On The Rocks music festival and spent 10 days in the city collaborating with local artist, Miranda Currie. Team Y2Y (Yellowknife to Yukon) #snowcarving in #Yellowknife. We carved "coming up for air," a giant iceberg with a little seal basking in the sun on the outside. A wave carved bottom zone and wind sculpted top area. And inside is a nearly perfect sphere cut out, with a family of 3 seals going up for air to the little hole at the top of the sphere. Once you step in and your body blocks the door, you can see light coming thru the walls. And you stand in the middle, lean forward or back, side to side, and you will find the sweet spot. You can hear yourself amplified as you speak; it is an acoustic phenomenon that is so peaceful and lovely inside. In March of every year, there’s a Snow King Festival here in Yellowknife. During January and February, a team of about 12 people spend their days shovelling, scooping and blowing snow to create the Snow Castle - constructed right on Great Slave Lake. Today we did a tour of the construction site. . The Grand Hall inside has a capacity of 300 and is complete with an ice stage. Various events are held all throughout March (concerts, comedy shows - even burlesque [brrrlesque] shows in the past).
