Seosomun Shrine History Museum, Seoul; designed by Interkerd Architects + VOID Architects + Less Architects Below the Seosomun History Park lies this museum, situated on a site that served as an execution ground for state prisoners for 400 years, dating back to the mid-Joseon period. Additionally, between 1801 and 1866, this was also a site of Catholic persecution, where countless Catholics, steadfast in their faith, were executed. In commemoration of these tragedies, an architectural competition in the mid-2010s led to the commissioning of a museum on this site. The resulting museum, largely subterranean, repurposed four stories of an underground public parking space added by the city in the mid-1990s. 📍@leeummuseumofart one thing you should know about south korea is that they have massive support and appreciation for artists. i was surprised when I arrived here, there were a lot of museums, artist shops, cafes, boutiques etc. they are loterally everywhere. I've been living here for 8 months but haven't even covered 1% of what is available. anyway, i've been to several at this point. but, what I truly liked the most would be this museum. It was so unique and interactive. they showcase modern art as well as traditional art that were presented in a modern way. i took us half a day or more to get around this museum. but, honestly you should dedicate a day. This has to be my favourite spot in Seoul so far! Been a feast for the senses, not just with the museum's fantastic collection, but also the aesthetics of the space and buildings. Each building is designed by a different architect, but the flow through the different parts of the museum is an experience in itself, and so well coordinated with the artwork that each space houses. Much thought was put into transitional spaces, like the spiral stairwell with the drum, which is like a modern take of the Initiation Well in Sintra. ‘Human, 7 questions’ an exhibition on view at Leeum Museum of Art explores the definition and core of being human. Humans have long believed that they are able to alter the course of the world independently from God, the astonishing development of science and technology is a testament to that. On the other hand, humans face uncontrollable disasters that alter their daily lives, posing questions about humans. Leeum aims to bring to life the meaning of being human and to assess the future through the exhibition. The exhibition poses 7 questions about humans through approximately 50 artists and 130 artworks. The "Statue of Brothers" at the War Memorial of Korea. On June 25, the 70th anniversary of the start of the #KoreanWar, we spent some time wandering the grounds of this museum (swipe to see images). Although the museum itself was closed, there were still visitors in the remembrance hallways and on the grounds, paying their respects, I imagine, as we were. Бесплатные туры на английском, корейском, китайском и японском с гидами. Вход на постоянные экспозиции бесплатный. ⠀ Это стремление сделать культуру и историю Кореи доступной и понятной максимальному числу людей восхищает. Противоречивые исторические периоды освещаются без прикрас, а по президентской резиденции проводят бесплатные экскурсии. ⠀ Доступность и открытость информации для всех — признак демократии де-факто. За это влюбляешься в Корею и хочешь быть там из-за этого ощущения свободы. ⠀ Эта доступность — одна из причин почему местные могут и понимают исторические и политические процессы и любят обсуждать эти вопросы 24/7. Вовлечённость в политику — национальная черта. ⠀ Забастовки у дома президента и протесты вокруг посольств — это обычно. Демонстрации не согласовывают месяцами. Их организовывают и они происходят на центральных улицах столицы. В кутузку увозят за нарушение порядка, а не за высказывание левых мнений. Революция свеч, импичмент и аресты последних трёх президентов — примеры работающей демократии. ⠀ Свой первый день в Сеуле я провела в Интернете.
