However I also think it’s REALLY important to high-five the fifty-thousand-million failures along the way. E.g. 👊 I was unlucky candidate # 8 to fill 7 board roles. 👊 I missed out on the 2015 Rural Women’s Award. 👊 I did a speech at a Premier’s event + got crickets. Na-da. 👊 I SUCK at ball sports. (Very, VERY bad.) 👊 I’ve hit ‘send’ on emails I shouldn’t have. 👊 I spent my entire 20s unlucky in love. 👊 I pitched to a TV journo + got a very HARD no 👊 I’ve had plenty of work proposals rejected 👊 I got a D- for year 8 maths, and 👊 last week I brushed the little guy’s teeth + accidentally made him vom. And there are many, many more - lots I’m not brave enough to share… But every single one of those stinkers was like catching a tidal wave onto the next, most amazing thing. ‘Mental health’ may as well be double-Dutch. To my old man, that is. 👨🏻 But as a bloke of his generation who’s abso-LUTELY seen his fair share of ‘character-building stuff’; that’s what makes his pearls of wisdom on the (implied) subject just so damn precious. Reflecting on the drought of ‘82, his advice for someone else in the same shoes went a little something like this… “During that time, I became really close with our neighbours. It helps to talk to people who are going through the same thing. You don’t have time to socialise when you’re working 7 days a week, but you can always pick up the phone.” Dad also talked about being an eternal optimist, and that ‘every goal had to be a win’ - which I think’s an incredible testament to the ingenuity and resilience of those in ag. He also talked about the importance of acceptance… and that ‘what will be, will be’. CULTURE IS KING – said no one in safety science, ever (anymore). It’s true: ‘safety culture’ went out with snap-pants, sunny boys + mullets… and for good reason. There’s a sea of papers out there to illustrate the point, but in short: 👉🏼 it’s almost impossible to define without over-simplifying 👉🏼 it’s even more difficult to measure (sooo many moving parts!), AND 👉🏼 it’s CONSTANTLY changing… kinda like a toddler on a bad day. Instead? Focus on what’s within your influence + control, and that has a direct impact on how people think + feel, and therefore what they do. E.g. bite the bullet and deal with the schoolyard bully, set supervisors up for success so they can better support your people, add structure to meetings so people actually speak up, and so on.
