Move over Indigo, you aren't the only plant that can be used to make paint! 🎨 Many paints, inks, and fabric dyes were originally made with natural pigments like mineral ores, plants, and even crushed up bugs. Indigo is maybe the most famous plant example, but one of the easiest plants to get usable pigment from might already be growing in your garden! Coreopsis or Tickseed is a local favorite with its tolerance for our extreme climate and brightly colored blooms, and these blooms are also a great source of natural pigment. In fact, Coreopsis is so easy to work with all you need is some flowers and water - that's it! Simply snip off a handful of blooms, remove the petals, put the petals in a bowl or cup, add a bit of boiling water, and use a popsicle stick or spoon to mash them. Right away you'll have a useable yellow-orange watercolor paint, and you can let the petals sit for a richer color or play around with adding lemon juice or baking soda to get a range of different warm-toned colors too, all from the same plant. If you're looking for a more advanced project, Coreopsis also makes great ink and fabric dye. Though these take extra steps they're still easy to do at home, and since Coreopsis have plenty of flowers to go around during their months-long blooming period, you'll have lots to work with and try out. KIJK nou naar dit kleurenpalet! 🤩🌱 Ik vind het zóo mooi. Ik kan hier alleen al uren naar kijken. Natuurlijke inkt. Wat ben je mooi. Rust. Warmte. Zachtheid. Balans. Stil. Inkt gemaakt door mijzelf en de fantastische @sonjatara. Je ziet o.a. inkt gemaakt van (op volgorde ➡️): - Appelbast - Berkenbast - Blauwhout - Kersenbast - Wilgenbast - Geelhout - Kastanjebast - Walnoot - Saliebast 🌱 Natuurlijke inkt Inkt is gekleurd water. En je kan van zóveel uit de natuur inkt maken. Bloemen, planten, bessen, noten, bast van bomen, bladeren.. Planteninkt is voller. Warmer. Dieper. De kleuren leven en spreken. In natuurlijke inkt zitten álle kleurmoleculen uit de plant, soms wel 100 (!). Het is dus niet 1 kleurtoon, zoals bij synthetische inkt. Je oog kan dit niet allemaal waarnemen, maar… je brein wel 🤯🤗 Daarom lijkt het alsof de inkt leeft, beweegt bijna… En het mooie: omdat ze zoveel kleurtonen bevatten, passen eigenlijk alle kleuren bij elkaar. Ze vloeken niet. Ze versterken elkaar. Net als de natuur, waar ook alles bij elkaar hoort, elkaar versterkt en een functie heeft 🙌🏻 Kleurechtheid 🧑🏻🎨 Natuurlijke verf is.. natuurlijk. Dat betekent dat ze blijven leven. De kleuren zijn niet zoals synthetische inkt over 10 jaar nog steeds hetzelfde (hoewel óok die verbleken). Wél zijn er grand teints, verfplanten die niet/nauwelijks vervagen en vroeger ook door de oude meesters werden gebruikt. Maar: natuurlijke inkt zal op den duur veranderen. En: dat vind ik een mooi gegeven. Want, niets in de natuur – of het leven – blijft hetzelfde 😇 ---- Ik schilder met zelfgemaakte, natuurlijke verf van aarde en minerale pigmenten en inkt van planten. 🇬🇧This afternoon we had a "tough time. Yarns had come in from new suppliers and we had to start making choices. Already for the coming winter. But there was so much beautiful yarn that we could hardly choose. So much choice for every budget! We had a glass of wine and everything went a lot easier! Don't worry, it was just one glass and we still chose many yarns and many colors! 🇳🇱Vanmiddag hadden we het ‘zwaar’. Watercolor for relaxation and testing my handmade plant based watercolor. Thanks @willa.wanders for the nice workshop, I will keep on practicing and relaxing with watercolors! As you know, some lake pigments extracted from plants are PH sensitive, modifying their color, and it’s easy to create lovely effects by dropping in acid or alcaline water. Plants containing anthocyanins are PH sensitive, though they are more fugitive colors than others. From left to right, drops of acid water, alcohol, alcaline water and plain water. From top to bottom, elderberry berries, mix of honesty flowers plus red cabbage and copper, cosmos flowers and black knight scabiosa. Cosmos flower contains carotenoids and are almost insensitive to PH.
