Story by Erin Thompson, USAICoE Staff Historian March 8, 2024 U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence U.S. Infantry scout with "Scout Dog" in the Pacific Theater (National Archives) The G-5, General Headquarters, American Expeditionary Forces, made a proposal in early 1918 to procure dogs for World War I. The matter was rejected. On the eve of the Pearl Harbor attack of December 7, 1941, the only dogs being utilized by the U.S. Army were sled dogs. On March 13, 1942, the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps (QMC) began training the first dogs assigned to the Army’s new War Dog Program. These dogs assisted in all aspects of Army operations throughout World War II and beyond, including message delivery and scouting patrols. Unleash your inner superhero on National Superhero Day, April 28 by sending your support to the Military Working Dog Heritage Museum. This day has been celebrated since 1995 to recognize and appreciate all the heroic acts of kindness that people around us do every day. So, don your cape and join us in celebrating National Superhero Day! Three reasons why dog handlers who support the museum are superheroes: Superheroes inspire us with their stories. Superheroes bring people together to share in the camaraderie of the kennel. Who are/were your friends and how did they and your dog(s) impact you? Where and how did you spend your time in K9? What challenges did you encounter/overcome? What “aha” moments did you have? Let’s talk dogs! One of the missions of Military Working Dog Heritage Museum is to gather, safeguard, and share the stories of individual dog handlers, veterinarians, and vet techs. We’d love to set up a time, convenient to you, that will allow you to share that story in a conversation with one of our volunteers. Please give it some thought. This is one way you can honor your K9 partners and community. Contact us at [email protected] to learn more about this unique opportunity. #K9 #mwdheritagemuseum #yourstory #tellyourstory #tribute

#mwdheritagemuseum #AirForce #doghandler #museum Meet our talented Vice President, Lane Hagerdorn. After 9/11, Lane and his partner, Gabe, were on their way to the mid-east the following day. You’ve seen some of Lane’s writings in the Paw Print Newsletter, as he crafts a column every other month. Lane works on numerous projects behind the scenes, but if you attended our Fort Benning event, you had the opportunity to meet him in person. Lane brings a high level of communication and management skills to the team, and, with his planning expertise, is producing critical documentation for the museum’s next steps. Today, the Museum Team would like to showcase and honor Lane Hagerdorn. Thank you, Lane.

-We’ve come so far in such a short time. But we have much more to do to find and conserve the history of America’s working dogs, your working dogs. -Your donation can help us purchase needed archival materials to conserve the wonderful artifacts that we’ve collected. We are fundraising for a Mobile Museum to take the show on the road–to attend events across the country. We are asking for your help to make that happen. Nobody can do this on their own –can you spare $10. Your funds compounded by other donors will go a long way. -You can find more information on our website at mwdheritagemuseum.org/donate and while you’re there, make it a monthly donation. If you have questions about how your funds will be used, you can always reach out to our President, Albert Johnson. He’s always happy to speak with supporters. 865-507-8903 #k9ltw #dog #mwd #workingdog #k9 #handler #doghandler #history #historybuff #museum #501c3 #mwdheritagemuseum #military #mwdhm #heritage #donate #nonprofit #charity #pointyendofthespear

We celebrate Women's History Month during March. This recognition gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the important contributions of women serving as Military Working Dog Handlers, Veterinarians, and Vet Techs. The number of women stepping up to serve in this role has risen exponentially. If you are, have been, or know someone who should be celebrated this month, we invite you to include a photo and post in their honor.
